Brook Dr., Muncie, IN Meeting Minutes, April 1st, 2012 The April club meeting was held at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. Club President Dave Rittenhouse opened the meeting and welcomed 12 members. Dave started a discussion on creating a new Show Flyer for our January Show. He suggested that we include an outline drawing of the state with a star where Muncie is located. We would also want to include drawings or pictures of jars and bottles and other items that might be for sale at our show. Dave would like your suggestions on how we can make our show flyer better, and he would love to have someone volunteer to help create the new show flyer. Dave also opened the discussion to changes we might make to our January Show starting in Dave suggested that we start drawing attention to other types of items besides fruit jars that will be for sale at our show. This will increase the number of collectors who attend, and potentially draw more interest from the general public. In addition to our fruit jar dealers, it would be nice to expand the number of dealers who sell insulators, bottles of all kinds, and also include small tabletop antiques. If you have additional ideas to grow our January Show, please contact Dave. Dave reviewed the list of upcoming bottle shows. You can find an up-to-date list of bottle shows on the Federation website: Dick Cole mentioned that there will be a re-enactment of the Ball Brothers 1927 factory on the Ball State University website. He will be participating in a demonstration that will be shown at the BSU Alumni Center. Dick gave us an update on the Club Library. He mentioned that John Straw (Head of Collections at BSU Library) is assocated with the Friends of the Library organization, and they are interested in sell- ing a copy of the Standard Fruit Jar Reference signed by Dick Roller for $250. This book is being offered through the Roller family. Please contact Dick Cole for more info. Colleen Dixon gave the April Treasurer s report. The club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. See you all at the next club meeting, Joe Coulson, Secretary Silver spoon advertising Ball Bros. Glass Factory Muncie, Ind (with picture of factory)
2 Page 2 Show and Tell The theme for Show and Tell for the April club meeting was to bring an item with your Town on it (where you lived, where you were born, etc.). Dave Rittenhouse lives in Farmland, Indiana, and he brought: a clear pharmacy bottle with a paper label for the Laudanum product (contained opium) from the Ely Botkin Drug Co.; two early 1900s real-photo postcards of Farmland; a clear quart milk bottle for Hill s Dairy, Winchester, Ind., Visit the Haloed Kow Dairy Store, Home of Cream-I-Rich Ice Cream ; a sun-colored amethyst solid pour jelly glass; and an aqua Hutchinson for Muncie Bottling Co., Muncie, Ind. Dave also shared an unusual recent purchase. It was a metal topseal lid embossed Ball Vacu-Seal Pat.Pend.. It was made of thick metal, and it had a flowed-in white rubber ring for sealing. This may have been the first of the Ball Vacu- Seal lids. Meg Spangler told us that her kids are now out of the house, and she has more time for her hobbies. She used to attend local club meetings a long time ago when they were held at Phil Robinson s house (and the museum). She would like to come to more meetings in the future. Everyone was glad to see her, and her enthusiasm was contagious. Meg had one idea for getting more kids involved in the jar collecting hobby. It might be effective to have a school program where you could talk to kids in rural communities. Meg likes to collect the Ball canning literature. She displayed a 1913 Ball Correct Methods for Preserving Fruit ; a 1916 The Ball Blue Book of Canning and Preserving Receipts ; and a Ball Steam Pressure Cookers Canners Cook Book un-dated (late 1930s). Meg also displayed a pair of the Phil Robinson Salt & Pepper shakers. This is a nice item to remember Phil by. Dick Cole brought a clear pint Red Book #634-2 Cole s (script) Pure Honey (base: Robert Cole / 21 ozs / Oakland Calif) (reverse: OI logo and year code 3). This jar represented a package that could be re-used as a canning jar, once the original contents were emptied. Dick mentioned that even today you can re-use mayo jars for home canning. Joe Coulson shared a silver advertising spoon, Ball Bros. Glass Factory / Muncie Ind (picture of the factory, and dated 1916 on the tip of the handle); a milkglass topseal lid BALL PERFECTION / No. 2 / Pat. Apr. 10, 1900 / Muncie, Ind. ; and a Ball Timeline poster from the late 1970s. This poster was interesting, because it had a great deal of visual and informative fruit jar facts. The last date on the poster was 1976, and it showed a picture of their new headquarters building on High Street in Muncie, Indiana! Sue Wilson told us that her grandfather had owned a dairy. She showed us a clear quart milk bottle for the Wilson Sanitary Dairy, and it is the only one known. The dairy later changed it s name to Wilson-Carver Dairy, and then finally to Carver Dairy. The company performed milk delivery until Sue told us a story about how the dairy lost a horse one night in You know how they found the horse? The horse continued to travel its route on its own, and that is where they found it! Sue also shared a purple pint Economy Trademark, because she lives in Economy, Indiana; and an amber beer bottle, Muncie Brewing Co. Muncie Ind (base: SB&G Co). Anne Szopa displayed an aqua Hutchinson for the Star Bottling Works / (star) / Muncie Ind (with closure); a clear 1/3 pint milk bottle for Producer s Quality (Muncie, Indiana); a clear quart RB #902 Economy Trademark (reverse: ghosted SAFE); and an aqua quart RB #906 Economy Sealer Patd Sept 15th 1885 wax sealer (all embossing ghosted, a purchase from Phil s museum). Colleen Dixon brought a clear gallon milk bottle for Gribler Dairy Pasteurized Skim Milk Van Wert Ohio ; a clear quart milk bottle for (front) J.E. Gribler Dairy (in a ribbon) Please Return Bottle (back) Pasteurized (picture of a baby with bottle in his mouth) Protected Milk ; and a clear quart milk bottle for (front) Decker s Pasteurized (in ribbon) Milk Cream Lima, Ohio (back) Stop at Decker s Dairy Bar (in box) On Rt#25 South For Our Giant Milk Shake Ice Cream and Sandwiches. Lou Ebert shared a clear quart RB # Michigan Mason (he was born in Grandville, Michigan); an aqua pint RB # Swayzee s Improved Mason (he lived in Swayzee, Indiana as a kid); an aqua pint RB #1624 The Marion Jar Mason s Patent Nov. 30 TH 1858 (he has lived in Marion, Indiana for many years); an aqua Hutchinson bottle for the Mineral Bottling Co. Marion, Ind (circa ); an amber beer bottle, C. Liebenguth Marion Ind (reverse: This Bottle Not To Be Sold) (it is the only example of this bottle he has ever seen, made circa ); a clear Hutchinson bottle, J.T. Rademaker Marion, Ind (circa ); an aqua crown top soda bottle, Queen City Bottling Works Registered Marion Ind (circa ); and a clear crown top soda bottle, Eagle Bottling Works Marion Ind (around a circle containing an eagle) (heel: Min. Con t. 6 1/2 Fluid Ozs.) (circa ).

6 Page 6 In Memoriam, Jeff Harper Written May 18, 2012 by Mary Harper: It is with a very heavy and broken heart that I must announce Jeff's transition this morning at 12:43 a.m. He died with Katie, Andrew and me telling him how much we loved him. It was peaceful, just the way he wanted it. We are all devastated and will miss him very much. Thank you everyone for your kind and comforting words. They meant so much to all of us. Mary also wrote a Tribute to Jeff, and here is a small excerpt pertaining to his beloved hobby: Jeff was a modest guy. He never bragged about himself or his heritage. Many of you know that he was passionate about collecting Ball canning jars. At his passing, Jeff possessed over 2400 different Ball fruit jars, 100 different Ball soda bottles, and numerous other go withs such as lid boxes, paper items, and anything related to the company. He was active in the Fruit Jar Club, both attending jar shows and participating in online discussions. He was an expert on the Ball Brothers Corporation and widely acknowledged to have the most complete Ball jar collection in the world. Years ago, I suggested that he look at a couple of Ball jars, after I noticed that while they looked the same, there were differences. Besides, they were made in Muncie, Indiana, our hometown. Even more importantly, the company was founded by five brothers, including Frank C. Ball, his great-grandfather. I m sure that Frank C. would be astonished at and proud of his greatgrandson s collection. I m just sorry that Jeff didn t live long enough to put his vast knowledge on paper. 8 MIDWEST ANTIQUE FRUIT JAR & BOTTLE CLUB A jarrific place to share and learn Send articles and info here: Joe Coulson, Editor Collingswood Ln. Fishers, IN JCoulson@LeaderJar.com ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED This late 1970s version of the Ball Timeline poster has much more visual representation of their fruit jar history, because Ball was still in the home canning business at that time. A new edition of the Ball Timeline poster can be found on the official Ball website: WE RE ON THE WEB! Announcements The Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors website is a great resource. Our club is a proud member of the FOHBC. One of the useful tools on the Federation website is the bottle show listing: Doug Leybourne would like everyone to know that he will be retiring from his life insurance practice of 43 years on July 1st. Doug fully intends to continue the Red Book and is working on the 11th edition. Here is the website for the book: Upcoming club meetings: (an up-to-date list is always on the club website) June 10th; Bring an item with a War theme July 11th 15th; Summer Muncie Jar-B-Q at The Signature Inn August 5th; Annual Picnic at Jerry & Colleen Dixon s home September 2nd; Bring your first jar (the one that got you started) This year we're calling the 2012 Summer Muncie Fruit Jar Hotel- Show/Get-Together a JAR~B~Q! That's because our favorite chef, "BBQ Bob" Rhineberger, is going to be cooking up a mess of meat for all you jar nuts!
