Ohio St., Fortville, IN Meeting Minutes, November 4th, 2018 The November club meeting was held at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. Club Vice President Mike James opened the meeting and welcomed the following members: Mike Mosier, Jim Durr, Jerry & Colleen Dixon, Harold Neal, Mike & Gusty Monaghan, and Joe Coulson. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved as published in the newsletter. Jim Durr gave the Treasurer s report for November, and the club continues to maintain a positive bank balance. Expenses included the cost for a Show Ad in the Antique Bottle & Glass Collector magazine for three months. The nominated slate of club officers for 2019 was voted on and subsequently approved at the meeting. The club officers for 2019 will be: Mike James, President; Mike Mosier, Vice President; Joe Coulson, Secretary; Jim Durr, Treasurer. We thank outgoing club President Dick Cole for his service to the club. Dick has had health problems recently, and he felt it to be in the best interest of the club to not run for office in Dave Rittenhouse has mailed out dealer and exhibitor contracts for our 2019 Muncie January Show to those who have been dealers in the past. There is also a contract in this newsletter that you can use. If you wish to be a dealer or do an exhibit you will need to complete a contract. The 2019 Muncie Show will be held on Saturday, January 12, Some folks start arriving at the Baymont Inn hotel as early as the Wednesday before the show. Stop in at the hotel and participate in room hopping where you can shop and talk about jars before the show. Mike James and Colleen Dixon reported that the glassblowing event at Ball State s Glick Center for Glass was enjoyable. They got to see Ron Dick make items. He is a glass artist who worked for Fenton Art Glass Company in West Virginia. The next club meeting will be held Sunday, December 2nd, 2018 at 1:30pm at Minnetrista in Muncie, Indiana. This will be our annual Christmas Pitch-In Dinner. Jerry & Colleen Dixon will be responsible for organizing the club items. Everyone should bring a small side dish and small dessert. There will be a voluntary White Elephant gift exchange at the end of the meeting. Bring a wrapped jar, bottle or go-with ($10) if you wish to participate. Mike Mosier shared a Ball blue QT (RB #2909 / SFJR #1357.5) Wan-eta Cocoa Boston ( a and t in Wan-eta mostly missing, probably from plugged mold); a yellow HG (Red Book 12 page 493) reproduction Millville-style fruit jar (original sales sticker still on the base: Department 56 Inc. / Made in India) (these were made in several attractive colors); and a clear 1/2 Liter (unlisted) Zenith (in script) (base: 1/2 L. VLG). Colleen Dixon displayed a green QT (RB #1898 / SFJR #885) Mason s Patent Nov. 30 TH 1858 (base: Tigner G. Co. / Xenia, Ind.) (with an aluminum cap); an aqua QT (RB #2945 / SFJR #1371) Western Pride Patented June 22, 1875; and an aqua HP (RB #3031 / SFJR #1402) Woodbury WGW Trademark Sterilizer (original closure) (set of 4 jars in original wire rack). Mike James brought an ice blue Hemingray refrigerator W ater bottle with the bust of George Washington (base: Hemingray) (original Hemingray screw cap); an early black and white postcard of the Woodbury Glass Company, Winchester, Indiana; a small clear decorative flask (etched label: Compliment of Woodbury Glass Co (monogram) Winchester, Indiana; a glass paperweight, T.C. Wheaton Co. / / Laboratory Glassware / Manufacturers ; a deep aqua QT (RB #1624 / SFJR #841) The Marion Jar Mason s Patent Nov 30 TH 1858 (base: X); a deep aqua QT (RB #1624 / SFJR #841) The Marion Jar Mason s Patent Nov 30 TH 1858 (base: Y); and an amber commemorative bottle (front: Good Luck Bob Have Many Good Retirement Years) (reverse: Robert O. Zimmer / / / 28 Yrs. / Faithful Service (Anchor Hocking logo) / Anchor Hocking Corp. / Zanesville Mould Co.). Joe Coulson shared a clear PT (RB #363 / SFJR #SI- 6) Ball Mason (reverse: John Ketchem / 40 Years/ And Counting) (base: golf putting green with flag in hole); and a booklet, Ball / Libro Azul / Blue Book (1977 Spanish Edition of their home canning booklet it was the only year that Ball made a foreign language edition). Joe made a stretch for the letter "X". Often times X marks the spot where a person puts their signature on a document. Well, there is no actual X on the item he shared, but there is a signature. Frank Clayton Ball wrote a book of his memoirs which was privately published in "FC" Ball (born: 1857, died: 1943) was one of the founders (and also the president until his death) of the tiny Wooden Jacket Can Co. through its evolution to the famous conglomerate Ball Corporation. His book, "Memoirs of Frank Clayton Ball: With Illustrations" comes up every once in a while for sale. Joe does not recall seeing a copy that was not signed by F.C. Ball. Joe acquired this example of the book at last year's Muncie Jar Show on actual show day at the convention center. The unusual thing about this book is that it has the following combination: signature, personal book plate, and dust jacket. This was the first time he had seen a copy with the dust jacket intact. If you are into collecting fruit jars from Ball Corporation, this book is on the "must have" list. There is a treasure trove of historical details inside this book which is almost 300 pages long. A reprint was made in 2003 and sold in the Minnetrista Gift Shop in Muncie, Indiana. It is not known if copies are still available. Joe purchased one of the reprint editions years ago for $20. Joe also shared a "W"ooden fruit jar shipping box. It came from the Gilchrist Fruit Jar Co. and once contained a dozen fruit jars. He had not seen another example. The box had a plastic bag in it which contained straw that was in the box when it was first found. Only one wooden slat is missing. We had three club members contribute to the monthly Show and Tell from the club s Facebook Group. If you can t make it to the club meeting, please consider sharing on the club s Facebook group. Joe Merkel shared the (3) different only known examples of X, Y and Z in Shield on Reverse of MASON PA- TENT NOV **Note** No s after Mason and No period after NOV Joe Merkel said: I Hope everyone enjoys these as much as I do. Acquired from the collection of Mr. Mason A truly fine man and dear friend, Don Burkett, who is very much missed and will always be remembered. Everyone really did enjoy seeing these rare fruit jars! They are listed as: RB #1868-1, , , and SFJR #914. Marty Troxell shared a stoneware QT (RB #2911-2) Washington Fruit Jar Patented March 13 TH 1866 (this is the only known example, and it is another form of the rare Torrey s Egyptian fruit jar); two brown early pottery fruit jars with different sizes of J.D. Willoughby stopple closures; six different sizes and amazing colors of the Mason s Nov 30 TH 1858 (base: WCD); and a stoneware QT (RB #3043 / SFJR #1409) Young s Pat May (on lid) (Weir style closure). After seeing Joe Coulson s wooden Gilchrist box posted on the club s Facebook group, Doug Leybourne shared that he also had a Gilchrist Jar Co. box. Doug said: Here s another box complete with straw and 12 Doolittle Self Sealer Jars. One slat has been removed while the other two have never been removed. Only one jar has been out of the box. The rest are as they were 118 years ago in the straw. No lids in the box. A real time capsule treasure compliments of Alex Kerr. According to Alex Kerr, this box was recovered over fifty years ago by George McConnell from the warehouse in Philadelphia many years after the company went bankrupt. Somehow the box made it to California and ultimately ended up in Michigan.

9 Midwest Glass Chatter November 2018 Page 9 Midwest Antique Fruit Jar & Bottle Club Show SATURDAY, January 12, 2019 This show is focused on antique fruit jars, bottles, flasks, insulators, jelly jars, target balls, lightning rod balls, go-withs and related items associated with the glass collecting hobby. Contemporary bottles, beer cans, table-top antiques and advertising items are also allowed. Color altered/irradiated jars or bottles must be so marked. Sales tables will be $40.00 for the first 8 table, and $30.00 for each additional table. Each contract will be limited to TWO NAME TAGS PER CONTRACT with the exception of minor children. Sub-letting a table to another dealer or individual will not be permitted. Cancellation with full refund will be accepted until December 29, Table covers will be provided. DISPLAY SET-UP TIME IS 6:30AM AND SALES TABLES SET-UP WILL BEGIN AT 7:00AM SATURDAY. All dealers must be set-up and have their merchandise priced by 9:00AM. All dealers and displayers must wear their name tags during set-up and are asked not to remove their merchandise before 2:00PM. Displays will be non-competitive, and a participation award will be presented to all displayers. The Federation Ribbon will be given for the Most Educational display, and Antique Bottle & Glass Collector Magazine will award a ribbon for People s Choice. A special jar will be given for Dealer s Choice. We would appreciate having your display entry 30 days before the show so we can reserve enough table space and order enough award jars. The Show Chairman will make decisions concerning any circumstances not specifically covered in this contract. Coffee and donuts will be provided during set-up time. It contains the original straw and original jars from over 118 years ago. It was found in a warehouse in Philadelphia a long time ago. SATURDAY, January 12th, 2019, 1:30pm, Annual Show and Sale at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie, Indiana. Many dealers from across the country will be set up. Sunday, February 10th, 2019, 1:30pm, meet at Minnetrista. The theme for Show and Tell will be recent purchases, particularly those made at our January Show.
