2 Midwest Glass Chatter March 2017 Page 2 Show and Tell The theme for the March meeting was to bring manufacturing sample jars or bottles or your favorite item. Dick Cole shared a very nice Ball Corporation go-with. It was a plastic drinking pitcher that commemorated the 1980 Olympic Games (side: figure of Greek Olympian /1980 Olympic Games) (base: This pitcher designed exclusively for the makers of Minute Maid by Don E. Harley Associates and molded by Ball Corporation). Dave Rittenhouse displayed a clear J.W. Beardsley jelly glass; a clear QT (RB #349-6) Ball Ideal test run jar (to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial); and a clear PT (RB #2885 / SFJR #1172) Seal Pat. Feb. 24, 1914 Detroit, mich. / Victor Jar Co. (square jar, Dave reproduced the metal clips). Mike James shared a bottle with a carnival glass coating (the coating was put on after the bottle was formed; beer bottle shape; never put on the market; made by Owens-IIlinois); a clear very lightweight jelly jar made in the late 1970s or early 1980s (experimental material to give it light weight; had a paper label indicating it was a sample piece); an extremely dark amber Michelob bottle (this was a test piece; it failed because it was too hard to anneal the dark amber glass); a clear Miller High Life bottle (never made it to market); a light green sample bottle (made by Root in Terre Haute in the 1920s or 1930s); a light Bacardi green QT Ball Perfection (sample run color) (reverse: Years of American Heritage Made In U.S.A.); a clear PT Ball Perfect Mason (sample run color) (reverse: Years of American Heritage Made In U.S.A.); and an amber beer bottle made at Fairmount (sample bottle; with paper label). Mike told a story about when he was working for Fostoria. They were making an American punch bowl on the biggest hand machine ever made. They decided to make it at Indiana Glass in Dunkirk in black glass. The glass was too dark. They couldn t check the annealing. You have to be able to see through the glass to properly check the annealing. Mike tossed a half dollar coin into one, and it blew to pieces because it was not annealed correctly. He said that tossing the coin was like tossing ice into the punch bowl like customers would be doing. They had already made a bunch of them and had to discard them. Joe Coulson shared a primitive wood-framed mirror from the early 1900s. He recently acquired this item from Joshua Beagle. If you turn the frame around and look at the backside there is a piece of cardboard backing the mirror. The cardboard was from the end of a shipping box for Ball (3-L logo) half gallon fruit jars! This is one of the earliest cardboard shipping boxes made by Ball. They were first introduced in Jerry Dixon displayed a an aqua Pluto water bottle. The bottle was an unusual color for Pluto bottles. Colleen Dixon displayed an aqua tall HP (RB #1489 / SFJR #1301) Trade Mark Lightning (salesman sample); an aqua tall PT (RB # / SFJR #1301) Trade Mark Lightning (base: PUTNAM); an aqua QT (RB #2880 / SFJR #1340) The Van Vliet Jar of 1881 (wire does not cross over embossing on the jar; groove on base for wire to tie in; repro wire closure); and a pottery half pint as well as a 5 gallon (RB #2937 / SFJR #1370) Weir Seal No. 4 Western Stoneware Co. Monmouth Illinois (on lid) (two tone brown and white) (purchased from Doug Leybourne). Lou Ebert shared salesman sample kerosene oil can (clear glass). This piece was made by Smith Glass Co. The company originated in Canton, Ohio. The Smith Glass Co. got their glass bodies from the Canton Glass Co. Canton moved to Marion, Indiana in Smith moved to Marion in 1891 and located just north of the Canton firm. Smith Glass Co. was only in business a few years. Gusty Monaghan displayed a light amber QT (RB #340 / SFJR #BF-2) BBGMCo (base: An Historic Reproduction No. 1 The Amber Buffalo Jar Muncie, Indiana 1976); an aqua bottle Anderson s Dermador ; and four different clear pharmacy bottles. These were purchased from Webb s Antique Mall in Centerville, Indiana. Gusty also shared an amber PT (RB #1123 / SFJR #485) Globe; and an aqua PT widemouth (RB #1124 / SFJR #486) Globe. These were purchased at Jimmy Reed s Antique Shop in Hagerstown, Indiana.

Schulz, Editors Baffle Marks and Pontil Scars: A Reader on Historic Bottle Identification. Society for Historical Archaeology, Special Publication Series No. 12, Germantown, MD. This huge (555 pages), recently released work is one of the best "bottle books" there is for helping with the complicated subject of bottle identification. This book includes - for the first time in print - a summary of this websites (Historic Glass Bottle Identification & Information Website) bottle dating key as a chapter entitled "Summary Guide to Dating Bottles" by this author (pages 33 to 49). It also includes "Bottle Dating Worksheets" (pages 51 to 55) by Rebecca Allen and this author to assist in the systematic dating of an historic bottle based on the information in that dating key as well as other information on the website. In part, this book fulfills this authors long time desire to have a hard copy "field guide" version of this website for use by archaeologists (and others) by having at least the dating portions available in printed form to take to the field. Beyond that the book includes more information about historic bottle identification (typology), bottle production, and more than can be summarized here. More details can be found at this website:

6 Midwest Glass Chatter March 2017 Page 6 Canadian Fruit Jars & Bottles Go-Withs George Power of Ontario, Canada is one of our club members from Canada. He recently shared these wonderful items online. This envelope is from The Ontario Glass Co. Limited, of Kingsville, Ontario. It has a depiction of a Monarch fruit jar. No example of this fruit jar is known. Note the striking similarity to The Victor patented jars. This envelope is from The Beaver Flint Glass Co. Limited, Toronto, Canada. This company was a distributor (not manufacturer) for pharmaceutical bottles & etc.
