Blue Ridge Collectors' Club Newsletter Volume: I Issue: 2 February 2012 What's Happening? The price of gas is projected to be between $4.00 and $5.00 a gallon in I certainly hope that this is a miscalculation. If it comes true, I hope that all of our Blue Ridge lovers will set aside a travel fund so that we can see each other in Erwin in October. It makes me heartsick that the oil companies have amassed such obscene profits at the expense of the American people. On a more positive note, in the Ruffins' recent Blue Ridge Newsletter there was a wonderful article about Ray Farley, a Blue Ridge Collecting icon. He is 90 years old and going strong. The article was a really nice tribute to someone that has contributed so much to Blue Ridge heritage. Congratulations, Ray and thanks for your contributions to our knowledge of Blue Ridge. NEW PATTERN? Just when I thought I'd seen most Blue Ridge patterns, I stumble onto a beautiful, unmarked square, ribbed bowl in this gorgeous pink, green and black design. If it hasn't been named, I would like to call it Barefoot Treat. Page 1 of 6
Blue Ridge? Not Blue Ridge? Sculptured Fruit Pitchers Blue Ridge Three sizes of Sculptured Fruit Pitchers Clinchfield Artware Sculptured Fruit Pitchers It is generally accepted by Collectors that there are three (3) sizes of Southern Potteries' sculptured fruit pitchers: 7 ; 6.75 ; and the smaller one sometimes marked 'Petite' and the larger one sometimes marked 'Deluxe'. I have seen: a red clay sculptured fruit painted totally green; a high quality sculptured fruit painted like the Southern pieces, but without any black trim and the fruit colors were slightly muted; but the quality of the china was suggestive of Southern Potteries. I have seen a sculptured fruit pitcher painted in the Southern style and size, trimmed in orange, made in Czechoslovakia. There are some differences in the pitchers, other than size, as Ralph Grissom, long time collector explained, the smaller pitchers have purple grapes and yellow pears; the larger pitcher has yellow grapes and brown pears. Page 2 of 6
Pictured above is the elusive Bird Dog plate front and back. Even some of the unsigned specialty pieces were painted by the same artists that were allowed to sign their name. For some reasons and, why, one can only speculate. At any rate, the Bird Dog plate, the Fala plate, and the Big Catch plate are not signed, but attributed to Mildred Haskins Broyles and Lena Watts during 1941 and there is evidence that they were used as presentation pieces. TheBird Dog plate above has the original Pottery Show in Ohio paper label on the back. Snapshots POTTERY GUILD The forerunner of the Cronin China Company in Minerva, OH, was the Owen China Company built approximately in Dan Cronin moved his operation to Minerva and met an early death due to a riding (horseback riding) accident. Surviving Cronin, brothers managed the plant until it ceased operation in the fifties. Mr. Dan Cronin and Mr. J. Block of Block China Company were friends. In the late thirties, Mr. Block founded the Pottery Guild and Cronin China Company supplied at least some of the pieces of Pottery Guild ware (as did Southern Potteries on the Candlewick blank with sprayed edges and floral decals. On some rare occasions a piece may be found with both the Southern Potteries and Pottery Guild back stamps. BLUE RIDGE EYE CANDY Page 3 of 6
NEW FINDS, INFORMATION: (Please send me your information) STETSON CHINA The items most frequently misidentified as Southern Potteries items were made by Stetson China Company. Stetson China located in Lincoln, Illinois took over Illinois China Company on February 1, 1946 and changed the name to Stetson China Company. Some of their registration copy rights go back to They stopped manufacturing in 1966, a year after changing their name to Lincoln China Company. In 1955, Stetson claimed to be the largest manufacturer of hand painted ceramics in the United States, and, since Southern Potteries was about to reach its time of closing; this statement may have been a very true claim. Page 4 of 6
FINDS: Sandra Barefoot-Reid: I did find a Clinchfield Elephant on Etsy.com and while visiting in Greensboro, NC with my brother and his wife, found three (3) Clinchfield Fruit plates. The Clinchfield Fruit pattern is on the piecrust blank and appears identical to Fairmede Fruit on the Clinchfield blank. LETTERS: Betty Irwin, SC: What a nice Christmas surprise. I loved your newsletter! I really do! Sorry this 'old lady' was so late to let you know wait 'til you're 86 you will be slow too! I love all my Christmas cards and notes from my Blue Ridge friends. Wish I could be active once again! Still have my BR collections, although I have been giving it away piece by piece to my two daughters and five granddaughters. They all love it. Mary had her 61 st birthday in January. She finally picked out something but it wasn't Blue Ridge, she picked her grandmother's butter molds. I think of you all so often and what fun we had.
