1 CARLTON WARE NEWSLETTER #34 From Ian Harwood & Jerome Wilson SEPTEMBER 2006 There was a lot of excitement on ebay in August when a beautiful 10½ Jazz vase, in the Orange Lustre pattern number 3353, appeared for sale from a seller in Fort Worth, Texas. Bidding started almost immediately and by the end of the first day it had already gone over US$2,000. By the end of the sale there had been 16 bids in total and the final price ended at US$6,333. We knew who most of the bidders were but were delighted to see that the eventual winner lived just 5 houses away from us; our good friends and Carlton Ware collectors, Mario & Betty. On Wednesday evening this week (6 th ), Mario phoned to say that the vase had arrived and that it was wonderful and so we arranged to go along and see it the next afternoon. I think we were as excited as they were as we all stood around in awe at this beautiful piece in their cabinet. Mario and Betty then brought it along to our house to let us take some pictures; and here it is. You will find 3 more pictures at the end of this Newsletter. After that, let s hear what Paul in Australia found at a show on the other side of the world: I recently attended the largest antique and collectable fair in New Zealand, The Ellerslie Antique Fair in Auckland. It is always held mid August and usually holds some wonderful treasures. I was hoping to see some interesting Carlton ware on display on the various stands; however, I left a little disappointed. Lorraine and Rodney, from Art & Industry, put out the best piece; a lovely 14 FAN vase on the Ruby Lustre ground.

There were a few other bits on display - one stall had a nice Fantasia vase, about 6 high, a NEW STORK jug and a RABBITS AT DUSK bowl.

However, there was one piece that caught my eye; I have never seen one before, but then I haven't kept up with all that the Company

It was in off white with gold highlights - very of the moment!

2 There were a few other bits on display - one stall had a nice Fantasia vase, about 6 high, a NEW STORK jug and a RABBITS AT DUSK bowl. There was a smattering of floral embossed across a few stalls but Diane Akers had a number of pieces in a variety of patterns. However, there was one piece that caught my eye; I have never seen one before, but then I haven't kept up with all that the Company made during the 1970's. Anyway, Maxines Collectables had on her stand a wonderful wine decanter and set of goblets. It was in off white with gold highlights - very of the moment! Sorry for the clarity of some of the photos as I forgot my camera and had to rely on the phone. Thanks Paul for the report. Interesting to see that the lovely FAN vase was in the same shape as the previously mentioned Jazz vase.

Babylon 14½ Babylon temple jar pattern 4125, gloss green & yellow (front & reverse) This is a very appropriately named pattern.

3 Babylon 14½ Babylon temple jar pattern 4125, gloss green & yellow (front & reverse) This is a very appropriately named pattern. When we first saw a piece in Clive Graham s collection, Clive asked us if we knew what it was called. With a few helpful hints, it was easy to guess Babylon, as the pattern literally hangs down from the top of the pot, whether it be a vase, jug, bowl or a temple jar. The pattern comprises of layers of leaves, flowers and ferns and usually two large star flowers. In the background under the glaze are leaves and bell flowers in a shadow effect. Over this is a gilded pattern of finer ferns and flowers, some of which are enameled in a variety of colours. Finally, the large star flowers are applied. On most pieces there are two star flowers; one is made up of orange, pink, purple, green and yellow dots and the other has blue, pink, mauve and yellow dots. The most common colourway is pattern 4125, on a gloss green and yellow sponge effect ground, but there are other colourways to be found. 7 Babylon jug pattern 4125, shape 1347, gloss green & yellow (front & reverse)

Above is pattern 4126 on the Ruby Lustre ground and 4158 on a gloss yellow ground. Curiously though, this pattern number is actually for unpainted pieces in the cream and gold colourway. Below is a very pretty gloss pale blue piece; unfortunately, we do not have a pattern number for this colourway.
