Transcription of Science Time video Colour and Light The video for this transcript can be found on the Questacon website at: Transcription from video: Hi and welcome to Questacon s Science Time. My name s Dion! & & And I m! And today we re talking about colour and light, come join us! Let s go! (INTRODUCTION MUSIC) Hello everyone! Now hands up if anyone knows what we re going to be talking about today. Does anyone know? Colour and light! Colour and light! Well done! Now hands up who has got a favourite colour? Has anyone got a favourite colour? Fantastic! Do you have a favourite colour? Well what we re going to do, we ll see what your favourite colours are. What s your favourite colour? All of the colours! All of the colours! Good colour to have for your favourite! What s your favourite colour? All the colours. All the colours as well! Can you tell us just one of your favourite colours? What s one of your favourite colours? Pink. Pink! Pink! Good colour! Good colour! Anyone else got a favourite colour? What s your favourite colour? Green. Yellow! Yellow? Is yours yellow is it? That s a good colour as well. Well my favourite colour is orange. I really like orange.
Can you guess what my favourite colour might be? I think it s purple. I like purple. So we re going to talk about all sorts of different colours today in Science Time. Now what we re going to do first of all is look at a picture that doesn t have very much colour in it. This one right here. Now looking at this picture, is there any colour in this picture? No. There isn t is there? This is a picture of some tomatoes, some of these tomatoes are nice and ripe and red, and yummy and ready to eat and some of these tomatoes are green and they re not right and ready to eat. Now can you tell the difference? Can you tell which ones are ready to eat? You can t can you, because there is no colour. Umm I know! That 4 is not ripe. Not ready? Well we ll have a look. We ve got another picture that has some colour in it which will tell us which wasn t are good and which ones are not. Ready? There we are. Now can anyone tell me which ones are the yummy ones you want to eat? I was right! Which colour are they? Red! Red ones well done! And what colour are the ones that are not very yummy to eat? Green. So red and green. So colours can tell us a lot of different things! They can tell us which tomatoes are yummy and ready to eat (the red ones) and they also tell us which ones are not yummy and not ready to eat (the green ones). So they can be all sorts of different colours. Now there is another thing that has red and green inside of it. It s this thing here What s this? Does anyone know? A traffic light! A traffic light. Well done. So we ve got our traffic light here Now what s this colour at the top here? Red! It s red. What does red tell us to do? Stop! Stop! Can everyone say stop? Stop! Stop! Just like red so there we are. Now down the bottom, what colour is that?
That s green! What does green tell us to do? Go! Green tells us to go, exactly! Now what does yellow tell us to do? It means slow down! Slow down get ready for the red light because it s about to come on. So that s the yellow one in the middle. So we have red, yellow and green lights. Now you might have seen another type of light at a traffic light. You might have seen this man here. The little green man, now what does the little green man do? What s he tell you? Walk! It tells you to walk doesn t it? It tells you to walk quickly! Well walk quickly and safely. So the green man tells us that it s safe to walk on the road. Now what happens, do you think, if we see this man? Whoops! That one there. What does that mean? He says stop! When it s not time to go! It means don t walk, because it s not time to go and it s not safe to walk across the road. So we have our green walking man, and our red not walking man. They re right there. Now we re talking about a couple of colours now we re going to look at something that has a lot of different colours inside of it. What do you think this is? Does anybody know? What do you think this might be? A rainbow! A rainbow! Hands up who has seen a rainbow before! Has anybody seen a rainbow before? I ve seen a rainbow in the car. When do you usually see a rainbow do you think? When do you usually see a rainbow? When it rains and the clouds come and the sun! Yes! When it finishes raining and the sun comes out. What happens is all of those little droplets of water inside the air and they actually break up the light. Now in the light around us, there is actually quite a lot of colours inside that light but we just can t see them because they re all mixed together. What the water does is they break up the light and it makes it really really obvious to see. Like our rainbow right here, now what colours do you see in the rainbow? Red! Blue! What other colours what can you see in it?
ALL I can see blue. Yellow! Blue yellow orange! All sorts of different colours! And purple as well, you can see purple in the rainbow. So that s pretty good fun isn t it? Now we re actually going to make a rainbow, but we re not going to use any water. We re going to use some very special glasses. Now what we re going to do is if you put the glasses on and you look up at the light it makes lots and lots of rainbows. So we re going to give everyone a pair of glasses to have a look at, so if everyone wants to come get a pair of glasses. There we are, we ll give everyone a pair of glasses. There we are One of you as well And I ll take this one And do you want the yellow one do you? Of course, your favourite colour! I want everyone to look up at the light and see if they can see any colours. So moving your head around, see if you can see any colours and those of you looking through s glasses over there, hopefully you can see lots of rainbows as well. Which is lots of fun. So we could see lots of different colours using our rainbow glasses and that s because these glasses, just like the water, they break up the light into all the different colours. They re always there, but they re just hidden most of the time and the glasses help to see them. Now we re going to talk about some special colours, we re going to talk about these three colours right here. Can anyone tell me what colour is this at the top here do you think? Yellow! What s this one down the bottom? Red! Red, and what is this colour right here? Blue! Blue. So these colours are called the primary colours, can everybody say primary colours? Primary colours! Now we re going to call them main colours today because that s a bit easier to remember. So these are our main colours. Now what you can do with your main colours is you can mix them together to make other main colours. We ve got yellow, blue and red. So we re gonna try and mix them together now, as you can see here, and we re going to see what colours they make. Can anyone tell me, we re mixing blue and yellow together over here, what colour do we get? Green
It s green isn t it? So the blue mixes with the yellow to make green. What does red and blue make when they re mixed together? Purple! Purple well done! And what about red and yellow? When we mix red and yellow together, what do they make? Brown! Well that s actually orange, that one there. That s orange, but if you look in the very very middle, what s the colour in the very middle? Brown? Yeah! If you mix all of these colours together, you get brown. We re going to use some yellow, blue and red water and we are going to mix them together to see what we can make. So the first one we are going to do, is we are going to mix, I think yellow. Sitting back, Dion and I are going to do this and you can have a turn later. You can have a turn later. Moving back for me, well done. So we ve got some yellow inside here now, and we re going to add some blue water. What colour do you think we re going to make if we mix blue and yellow together? Hmm what do you think? Well if we look at that picture maybe we might be able to have a look. Which colour do you think might be in the middle of the blue and the yellow? Green? Good guesses. Well have a look. We ll mix the colours together and we ll see what we get. Ready? What colour is that? So we made green from mixing those together. So we ll try two other colours now. How about we try a red this time, so we ll mix a red. There we are. And what colour should we mix with red this time? Blue. Blue maybe? We ll try a blue. Ok, so we ll see what colour we make. So let s have a think, what colour do we think blue and red might make together? Purple! Hopefully! Good guesses, we ll have a look. Ready? We ll mix them together What colour is that? Purple!
It looks purple doesn t it? It s a light purple. So we ve got purple there, just a bit like our shirts. So we ve got purple here, which we make by mixing blue and red. You can make all sorts of different colours by mixing them together. We ve got one more. Ready? Which two haven t we mixed together yet? Red and yellow. The red and yellow. So we ll get our yellow first of all, there we are, and we ll get our red and what colour do you think we re going to make mixing together red and yellow? What do you think, red and yellow? What s that one you re pointing to there? Have a guess, what do you think? We ll have a look. We ll mix them together ready? So we ll hold them up nice and high, there we are, and we ll pour it in What colour is that? Orange! It s orange, well done. So we mix yellow and red to make orange, so these main colours, or primary colours, mix together to make other colours. And you can do this at home just using food dye. You can, it s very easy. (Music playing and camera showing children doing various activities) (Singing) So, while everyone is playing, I want to show you something else fun to play with here at Questacon. Come with me. Hi boys and girls, today I want to talk to you about shadows. Have you every stood outside on a nice sunny day and seen your shadow? Shadows are created when your body, or any other object, blocks the sun so you don t see any light and you see a shadow. You might see a bit of a shadow behind me now where my body is blocking the light. Here we are at the Wonderworks gallery at Questacon at our frozen shadow exhibit. What this exhibit does is it will freeze my shadow so I can walk away and have a closer look at my shadow. But to do it we re going to have to turn the lights down a little bit and I m going to stand here next to this special paper. Now this special paper is going to absorb the light but where my body is, no light will be absorbed, and you ll be able to see my shadow. So I m going to stand up here like this. Ready and flash! Look! You can see my shadow! There s my head, and my arm. Now I know somebody else who has a very different looking shadow than I do. Yeah Dion. Dion! Hi boys and girls. Hi. Hi! We re going to make shadows. Ok so we ll put our bodies against here and make a shape. Ok are we ready? It s going to flash. Look there s my shadow!
And there s mine! And there s Dion s shadow. Alright lets do it again. Lets make a different shape. I m going to make a little shape. I m going to make a big shape then. You ready to watch the flash? Oh look! There s my little shadow! And mine s a lot bigger than s. Yours is big and tall! So next time you go out on a sunny day, I want you to look for your shadow. I love making shadows and wherever you walk, your shadow will follow you. So lets go back and see what they re doing at Science Time. Hands up who has seen a rainbow again. Have you seen one? Me! Well what we re going to do is we are going to make a rainbow here and you can make a rainbow at home as well. Now when do we usually see rainbows, does anybody know? When there s water. Yeah, well when it rains we usually see rainbows. So we need two things for a rainbow, we need water and we need the sun. So we have our water, we have a bowl full of water and instead of the sun we re going to use a big torch here. So we re going to go over this way, so everyone sitting on your bottoms. Stay where you are. We re going to go to this wall over here to make our rainbow. So I m going to shine the torch through the water and we re going to make a little rainbow up on the wall. So sitting down on your bottoms. Well done. So I shine it through the water, and do you see? Hands up who sees a rainbow. Does anyone see a rainbow? You might be able to see on the side here, there we are! A little rainbow. The first thing we ve got for you guys to take home, is we have a parent information sheet. This sheet will help you I ll give one to Nan! You ll give one to Nan will you? Fantastic. So this sheet will help you to get some ideas about what to do at home with colour and light, and some experiments and all that sort of stuff. And this is on our website so you can download this, have a read of it at home and check out some fun stuff to do. Now this one here, we ve got a picture and I want you guys to tell me; what do you think you can see in this picture? What s at the top here, can anyone tell me? Red light!
ALL Yeah it ll be a red light wouldn t it, but what is this thing here, this big thing? Traffic light. It s a traffic light isn t it? So a traffic light there, and what s this big thing in the sky do you think? Rainbow. Yeah it s rainbow well done. So you can colour them in all different colours. So we ve got rainbows, traffic lights and all sorts of stuff. So before we get this, I want everyone to look at all the boys and girls at home and wave and say See you later! See you next Science Time! Bye!
