6 SPRING CITY S ANNUAL HERITAGE DAY SATURDAY, MAY 28, 2016 HISTORIC HOMES TOUR ART & ANTIQUES SALE The Friends of Historic Spring City are pleased to announce our annual Spring City Heritage Day, on Saturday, May 28th. This event includes a tour of many of the town s charming, mid-19th Century pioneer homes and buildings. Spring City leads the way in historic preservation and restoration in Utah. The entire town was designated a national historic district in the late 1970s, and since that official designation, over 50 of our local historical structures have been carefully and lovingly restored, including the Old Spring City School, which has been the most recent focus of intensive restoration. This wonderfully unique old edifice is now in its final phase of renovation. Once completed, the Old School will serve as a community center and city office space. The second floor will include a large ballroom for receptions and community programs, plus art and cultural events, and will serve as the venue for this year's Art Squared exhibit and auction. A Wall of Honor, comprised of engraved plaques, will be displayed as a permanent show of gratitude to all those who have made substantial contributions to the restoration of this magnificent old structure. Look for the Friends of Historic Spring City kiosk for additional information or to make Wall of Honor donations. Tickets for Saturday s Home Tour are $10 for adults and $5 for children, and can be purchased at the Old School or Main Street Firehouse. The annual Art Squared silent auction will again be held at the Old School, where patrons bid on one-foot square paintings by well known Spring City artists, including Lee Bennion, Susan Gallacher, M Lisa Paulsen, Doug Fryer, Kathleen Peterson, Cassandria Parsons, Lynn Farrar, Ken Baxter, and other Utah artists. Additional works by other well-known artists will also be on sale at the Old School, and in local galleries. Our annual antique sale will be held in the gymnasium at City Hall (next to the Old School). Visitors can preview antiques there (or original art works in the Old School) from 5 8 that Friday evening ($5 entrance fee), and also buy Home Tour tickets, or get a jump on the purchase of SPRING CITY S ANNUAL HERITAGE DAY SCHEDULE art or oldfangled treasures. There will also be many craft-booths along Main Street, displaying and selling their locally handcrafted wares and artisanal fare. Breakfast on Saturday morning will be served at the city bowery (behind the Old School); lunch at the old 'Rock Church' on Main Street; and coffee available all day in the Old School. Spring City is just off Highway 89, between Mt. Pleasant and Ephraim. 20 April 2016 Page 20 TREND OR TRENDY? Now & Again by Dennis Barker The one thing that never changes, is of course, change itself. When most of us think about spending a little time in search of a new trinket for our collections, we usually create a mental picture of spending our day exploring traditional antiques shops, filled with wonderful, old, sometimes mysterious objects, lovingly liberated from some musty attic, barn or basement. The other thing about change, is that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Although antiques shops have undoubtedly taken a hit in the current economy, interest in collecting remains a high as ever, and the marketplace still bustles. But, all things change, and as the remnants of the 19th century languish on shelves', and many dealers lament the lack of new young customers, hip 20 & 30 something s are flocking to shops filled with an eclectic assortment of antiques, retro, décor, used and sometimes just plain fun and frivolous goodies. Now & Again, at 209 E. 3rd South, is just that kind of place. Owner Michael Sanders has created a store that s speaks the language of his customers. Filled to the brim with cleverly displayed merchandise, Now & Again embraces midcentury modern, mod 70 s, contemporary chic, kitsch and antiques, all as if they were all from the same litter. The shop is a feast for the eyes, and easy on the pocketbook of it s customers. Walking through Now & Again, you can t help but be intrigued as your eyes are pulled from one display to the next. An antique chest living next to a pair of midcentury chairs, stacked on a coffee table of recent vintage. Old and new kitchen gadgetry and appliances are presented next to glassware with genealogies ranging from grandma to last years Big Lots specials. Shelves are filled with used florist pottery, alongside old McCoy and Roseville, and jewelry of all descriptions add a little glitz to vintage hats, ties & clothing, all expertly clustered with more knick knacks than you even thought existed. You get the idea. And, best of all, everything is at the right price. It s not just the extra green we can keep in our wallets that make resale shops like Now & Again so appealing to its younger patrons. Reusing things, that at one time would have been discarded, fits with the fashionable greener lifestyle which is the current vogue. Who could fault the notion that we can save the world and save a buck at the same time. Who knows if the current green trend will continue. I suspect that it will. If you re a collector, it s a great idea to add a few shops like Now & Again to your list of favorite stops. You ll be surprised at what you can find, and what a good buy it can be. If green is your thing, and you re currently shopping the resale scene, you might spend a little time in some of the more traditional antiques shops. You ll be surprised. Much of the merchandise in these stores is similar and comparably priced to resale shops, except older. You ll find that resale & antique shops are among the greenest businesses around.
