The words seeming to endow the object with an aura of importance that belie the un-extraordinary process used to create the print. It can all get a little pretentious.

I don t fool myself into thinking that these are original art. They are pretty, exude a certain charm, and have some modest value owed to age & scarcity.

Prints of all shapes and sizes bearing the ostentatious, French inspired description GICLEE. Sometimes with the added designation art print. The words seeming to endow the object with an aura of importance that belie the un-extraordinary process used to create the print. It can all get a little pretentious. At its core, a Giclee print is created by the same process you and I use to print a photo or graphic from our desktop printers. Giclee prints are nothing more than a reproduction of an original work of art, from which a high resolution digital photographic scan has been made and then printed on high grade paper using a commercial 6 color inkjet printer. In essence, a high quality poster with a chic name. BUYING RECORDS & OLD STEREO COMPONENTS Albums & 45 s (No 78 s please) In excellent condition only (801) Is a picture of a picture art? For years, I have collected R. A. Fox prints. Mostly from the 1920 s & 30 s, these prints were produced using the technology of the times, employing halftone photography and offset (lithographic) printing. I don t fool myself into thinking that these are original art. They are pretty, exude a certain charm, and have some modest value owed to age & scarcity. But in the end, they are pictures of art, not art itself. If one were to recreate these prints using the Giclee process, they would display all of the advantages of contemporary technology. They would be brighter, more colorful and detailed, have continuous tone rather than tiny dots, and still would be no more than pictures of pictures of real art. Signed, limited edition GICLEE prints. We all Remember those limited edition, artist signed, collector plates from the 70 s & 80 s. They were pretty, and we were assured they would go up in value. How is it we failed to learn that the term limited edition is most often limited, to how many they think they can sell. And that signature; it takes about 3 seconds and a drop of ink. But what about that certificate of authenticity I got? If you re going to buy the thing, it s always better if the seller is going to guarantee what the thing is. In this case, an authentic art print. A picture of a picture of a piece of original art. Now we all feel better. The emperor has no clothes. GICLEE reproductions are surely beautiful, vibrant, quality prints. The question is, whether we see these objects as art, or merely decorative. Regardless of how faithfully they mimic the original, it s hard to get past the fact that they remain replicas. Perhaps most troublesome, are the fine art publishing company s marketing GICLEE prints using terms that could easily confuse less sophisticated customers into believing they are buying original works of art. Unless they are buying these prints for strictly decorative purposes, most collectors might be better off to eschew the collectability claims made by the sellers, and buy the best piece of original art they can afford. Despite never using real gemstones, or gold, the company prided itself on the high quality of its design and materials, often using the finest sterling silver and Austrian crystals. Although much of Eisenberg s production was made of Rhodium, the most highly collected pieces are those made in sterling silver, especially figural pieces, and necklace & earring matching sets. During their heyday in the 1940s, their simplest pin would cost more than most people s weekly salary. Eisenberg & Sons was established by Jonas Eisenberg in 1914, as a women s clothing maker, and it wasn t until 1930, that the company decided that their clothing sales could be boosted by a line of complementary jewelry accessories. Initially, the jewelry was not sold separately, but came pinned to the garment. The jewelry was an immediate success. At first, Eisenberg looked to other manufactures for their jewelry, but as the pieces became more popular, the Company decided to sell the jewelry independent of their clothing, and set up its own jewelry design and manufacturing facilities. By 1935 the iconic blue velvet box inscribed, Eisenberg & Sons Originals began showing up in department stores. Most Eisenberg is made with Sterling silver or Rhodium settings, hand prong mounted stones, with superior clasps & pins, the quality rivals that of most fine jewelry.

Especially, take a little time to familiarize yourself with the makers marks. Newer Eisenberg jewelry does not command prices anywhere near what vintage pieces are worth.
