His son and daughter-inlaw, Donnie and Kara Morris, are the owners of the Times, and Don said that Donnie was looking for someone to with advertising and delivery of the papers. He didn t have the time, and I thought I d just help with the burden. It also gets me up out of my rocking chair, Don said. And besides, I have plenty of family in Northern Utah. Since I m up that way, why not deliver the papers and meet the fine folks. One of the ideas that Don has implemented is delivering the Antique Times to various hotels throughout the state. It is a good opportunity to entice and invite them to see what is available in the antique world in the region. Don has retired from the US Air Force where he served 0 years. He s also retired from the Federal Government as a civil servant. Now I have a lot of free time, he said. He has enjoyed distributing the Antique Times. He delivered newspapers as a boy, and he said it was reminiscent of that. He also enjoys meeting new people. Don raised his children in California. Donnie and Kara lived in Spanish Fork, and he and his wife had visited them frequently. We liked the area. 4 page 4 January 008 Glass Insulators Objects of beauty and design Kara Morris Editor I grew up in Northern California, and my Dad worked for PG& E (Pacific, Gas & Electric Co.) during my entire childhood. He would bring home these cool glass insulators that he would change out on the job, or that they would find while out working the lines. My favorite was the wood posts with the threads that the insulators screwed onto, that were on top of the crossbars on telephone poles. These made perfect grenades when we played war. Next time you are driving up a canyon, or along any old highway that runs next to railroad tracks, there is a good chance that you will see the old telephone poles with glass insulators still on top of them. I have seen insulators described as big blobby glass thingies, paperweights, and fishing net weights by people who don t know what they are. What exactly, is a Glass Insulator? Insulators were used for a variety of applications including telegraph, telephone, and electric power distribution. They date back to 1844, with the inception of the telegraph. Insulators were used to hold wires off the ground. Insulators have been made of porcelain, glass, rubber, wood, plastic, and iron. The last of glass insulators was made in Insulators come in hundreds of distinct styles, shapes and sizes. They come in hundreds of different colors. There is a vast variety of different embossing, and varying base types; with or without drip points, different styles of drip points, etc. Insulators range in size from as small as inches, to over a foot across and a foot tall. Insulators developed over the course of more than 100 years. Many shapes evolved to meet specific needs, such as to hold the line wire more efficiently, or to increase the insulating ability. Larger insulators were developed as larger, heavier wires and higher line voltages were used. Insulators come in all price ranges - depending on their rarity. You can actually find a large range of colors, styles and sizes of insulators that only cost a dollar or two See insulators page 6 Courtesy photo

One of the great things about insulator collecting is that most of them can be found fairly easily. They can be found in antique stores and malls, magazine ads and internet ads, and at national insulator shows being held around the country all year long. Once you have a supply of insulators, you can also trade with most of the other collectors. Those who want a treasure hunt can still find insulators in the wild. Just be careful where you gather them from, as you may get in a bit of trouble taking them off of poles. If you just want to enjoy the beauty of old, colorful, and unusual glass, glass insulators are an inexpensive way to create a great look. If you are more serious about the history of insulators, and collecting rare and unusual pieces, glass insulators offer a huge variety to please any pocketbook and astute eye. Enjoy! If you are interested in starting a collection of glass insulators, there are many books and websites with invaluable information on the hobby. ACORN S ANTIQUE SHOW & SALE Sat. 8 page 8 January 008 Star Mill Blaze: From Star Mill page 11 Smithsonian institution milling expert Robert Johnson in an article in the Salt Lake Tribune dated March 6, 000. The Star Flour Mill was actually an operational mill until 199, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and according to Shields, it is believed one of only 10 antique mills in the United States have the original milling equipment intact. There is also a long and somewhat romantic history associated with the Mill. It burned down in 190 and was rebuilt by the son of the original owner in The son, James Chipman, named for his father, had two wives, and one of them is still rumored to haunt the place. The Mill has traded hands through the decades, having been a craft store and then left vacant until 1990 when Copper purchased it. Copper had many ideas for the Mill. He once spoke of wanting to turn it into a hotel, restaurant and convention center. Besides the mill itself, the buildings included the miller s house and several adjoining log cabins, as well as a sizeable basement and a large warehouse behind the mill. The mill also served as a community gathering place to welcome Santa Claus for the last few years. Copper has said he has felt the presence of the spirits that haunt the mill. When he was refurbishing the mill to open his general antique store in 199, Copper took a 45-foot fall onto his head. He broke some ribs and an elbow, and the head trauma sent him into convulsions. It took him two long years to recover, and thinking back over the incident, he feels that his injuries would have been much worse but for the intercession of the resident spirits. Copper called them angels. He believed it was the original James Chipman and his mother Amanda that caught him and saved his life. He said he often heard footsteps along the halls when no one else is in the store. Many people who visited there were surprised the strange and poignant feelings associated with the place. The feeling has been called loving or warm and tingly, especially in the room where Copper fell. With the occurrence of the recent fire, the strange and dramatic history of the Star Flour Mill continues. Cleanup will take several months, but the store will reopen in March. We ve had our share of trials, Copper said. But we ve survived. We will perservere. We buy books. GUARDIANS: The Mill s concrete silos limited the spread of the fire and protected the Mill and the antiques inside. 10 page 10 January 008 Spotlight: Antoinette s Christy Hardman Deseret Antique Times Antoinette s, located at 4 East Broadway in Salt Lake City, specializes in antique and vintage jewelry. Owner Tonya Mahood said she s always loved antiques, but when she discovered vintage jewelry, she fell head over heels. She knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with it. The store itself has been around since 19, but Mahood bought it in 005. When she bought it, she said the previous owners had branched out into other types of antiques like plates and knick-knacks. Mahood took it back to what she said was the original Antoinette s: exclusively vintage and estate jewelry. Mahood loves everything about old jewelry. I love the classic craftsmanship, and the beauty of the old stones. Each one is a hand- made original piece, not machine stamped like what they make today. Mahood buys estate jewelry from people that come to her, but she also does some traveling to search out those rare pieces that she can t ever get her hands on otherwise. She has a wide selection of jewelry spanning from the Victorian era to the 60s. Her favorite era is Art Nouveau, a period between Mahood said jewelry from this particular era has a lot of flowing patterns. She said they also used the feminine figure in many of the Art Nouveau designs, as well as a lot of faces. While she loves Art Nouveau best, Mahood does not have the biggest selection dating from that period. They re very difficult to find, she said. I buy it whenever I see it, the pieces don t just come to me. Another favorite era of Mahood s is Art Deco, which dates from the late 0s to the early 0s. According to Mahood, the style of Art Deco is completely opposite of the Art Nouveau. They used a lot of geometric shapes and sharp angles, she said. Mahood said she feels she has a wide selection. And it stays pretty constant between what she buys and what she sells. She said that many times pieces sell so fast that if someone comes in and wants a particular piece, she encourages them to buy it on the spot. It s not just a sales pitch. So many times I have people come back in wanting that same piece, but it s already gone. Each piece is so unique, one of kind. They re so disappointed. Mahood said that her store draws a lot of young couples looking for engagement ring sets. Antique wedding sets have been our niche for a long time, she said. One of the things she loves best about the business is seeing the couples happiness, hearing their romance stories, and helping them find the exact wedding set they want. Sometimes I even have customers run up to me on the streets to tell me how happy they are and how much they love the rings they chose, Mahood said. One of the reasons Mahood loves jewelry so much is the story behind the individual pieces. Whenever I can I find out a story behind a piece I love to, but too often the stories are lost along the way. Other times people selling off their estate jewelry don t want to talk about it. Sometimes pieces will be engraved in the back, that is a story in itself, she said. She said a romantic history or an engraving increases the sentimentality of a piece, but she doesn t raise the price for it. One of her main goals is to keep the jewelry affordable. Mahood said she doesn t offer financing, but layaway is available. It may sound simple, but the price I set on an item depends on how much I had to pay for it. I try to keep my prices half of what retail is so I can give people a good deal. Overall, Mahood said she enjoys her business tremendously. It s just a lot of fun. We all get a long and have a great time, she said. Kara Morris / Deseret Antique Times CLASSIC CRAFTSMANSHIP: Antoinette s specializes in vintage and estate jewelry. Owner Tonya Mahood, above, enjoys seeing couples happiness and hearing their romance stories as she helps them find the perfect wedding ring. Below, collectors can catch a glimpse of Antoinette s extensive jewelry collection.

11 January 008 page 11 Star Mill blaze Owner Daniel Copper plans on perservering in spite of losses Christy hardman Deseret Antique Times The Star Mill, located at 14 East 600 North in American Fork, was built as a working mill in Last month, the antique store had a fire, and sustained serious damage, said owner Daniel Copper. The State Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire that occurred on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 00. A motorist driving past saw the smoke and called in the fire around p.m. and by the time the firefighters arrived, flames were already blasting through the roof of one building, and shooting high overhead. Copper was in Salt Lake finishing some Christmas shopping when he received word of the fire. A neighbor called me and said, You better get down here. Your sheds are on fire, said Copper. The mill itself was saved, due partly from the cement silos that flanked it, and contained the blaze from spreading to the historic mill. In an article by Ann Shields printed in the Salt Lake Tribune, Fire chief Jay Christensen said the fire was knocked down by 9:0 p.m., but a manned truck remained at the scene until early that morning watching for hot spots. It didn t seem real, Copper said. I could see it happening, but...it still doesn t seem real. According to Copper, the loss included a 100-year-old oak floor, as well as antique church pews from the third ward LDS church and an early pioneer cabin from Lehi. He also lost items preserved from an old elementary school, including antique windows. He also lost various roofing and timbres from other demolished buildings, several pieces of antique furniture, as well as other items. Copper said he had insurance but said it would be difficult to put a value on items that cannot be replaced, Shields reported. In addition to the actual fire losses, smoke damaged items in rooms adjacent to the buring warehouses. Copper is in the process of inventorying every item in the store and trying to their value. Sarah Hansen, an insurance agent with Security Insurance said that antique dealers can choose a plan that covers their building and premises, and another one that covers their personal property. The cost of the coverage depends on how much the monetary value is. Antique dealers would have to assess their net worth and set the amount, but unfortunately no amount of money can replace rare antiques that are destroyed beyond repair. The Star Mill was one of the best preserved mills in the state according to experts. It is extremely rare to find so much original milling equipment still intact, said Steve Hardman / Deseret Antique Times devastating fire: On Dec. 6, 00, warehouses next to the Star Mill in American Fork caught fire. Below, remains of hundreds of antiques lay in the snow. The destruction was limited to the warehouses and their contents. Bottom, thanks to the concrete silos and quick-responding fire personnel, the Mill and much of Copper s antiques were spared. See star mill page 8

Each row, column and block (x) must contain the numbers 1 to 9 without repeating.
