4 page 4 March 008 Dear Miss Bee Haven Contact miss bee missbeehaven@deseretantiquetimes.com What Bugs Miss Bee Haven This month Miss Bee Haven is as tired and irritated by the snow and cold as most of the rest of Utah. This has made her a bit grouchy, so she has compiled a list of Top 0 pet peeves in the antiques and collecting world When people use duct tape to repair an old book. Hello! When a guy talks about something like the range of styles of embossing on the Mason fruit jars (or railroad items, or insulators, or pottery) made in 858, with 8 slightly different variances, that he collects, for three hours, and nobody else but a fellow fruit jar collector cares about. If someone is not passionate about the subject, please keep it under 5 minutes. It makes me crazy when someone breaks an item, and then hides it, as if no one is going to notice. If you break something, at least have the guts to let the owner know. They will appreciate the honesty, and hopefully will not make you pay for it. When people paint pianos orange. What were you thinking?? It is so buggy when you find a great piece of glass at a yard sale or estate sale for $5.00, and you get it home and take the price tag off, only to reveal that it was covering up a chip or a crack. Rude. Are Bees Bugs? 6. I can t stand it when a shop or thrift store has a reproduction item that they sell as a real antique. They put collectible vase, and price it at $89.95, and you can buy it from Pik and Save down the street for $ When people still do their hair, clothes and make-up the same as when they were in high-school, yet they are 65 years old. They are soooo cool! 8. When an antique store has the same 0 items on the exact same shelf for 6 years, and they still want the identical price for it as 6 years ago. The tag fades, and they just keep re-writing the same number over the old price. If it hasn t sold in 6 years for that price, it probably never will. At least dust the shelf, and move the stuff to a different place in the store. 9. When people say; I have one of those, and I saw one just like it on The Antiques Roadshow. They said that it was worth $00,000.00! Only mine is rusty, and has a hole in it, and you can hardly read the lettering, so mine should be worth more, because it has more patina. 0. I hate it when people are negative about everything. They are always whining, and griping, and listing their complaints. I Hope that spring gets here soon. Miss Bee Haven

8 page 8 march 008 House Bill 9: Backhand to secondhand? steve hardman Deseret Antique Times Like hurricanes and monsoons, legislation has a season. And as anyone who was weathered such severe tropical phenomena can relate, a proper warning system becomes invaluable. This year the storm came in the form of House Bill 9, and many Utah antique dealers were caught unawares. At a fast glance, H. B. 9, innocuously titled Property Transaction Amendments, didn t appear to be about antiques at all. The general description of the bill stated that it, modifies the Pawnshop and Secondhand Merchandise Transaction Information Act regarding functions of the Division of Consumer Protection and exemption of certain businesses. The intent of the bill, according to its sponsor Representative Rebecca Lockhart, was to aid law enforcement in the recovery of stolen property with a value based on age, rarity, condition, craftsmanship or collectability and the apprehension of the involved parties. Secondhand dealers, such as pawn shops, are currently required to provide detailed information about the individual selling the secondhand items, including a thumbprint, as well as a description of the object itself. And that is where antiques came into play. In previous years incarnations of the bill, antique dealers have been exempted from participating in the Act. House Bill 9 sought to change that. This is not a bill about law enforcement, said Sandy Antique Mall owner Randy Tanski. Basically, the pawn shops are jealous because we can buy off the street without restrictions. According to Tanski, the legislature tried to do the same last year with House Bill 40. This police sergeant was shopping up front, Tanski said, And while I helped him, he said, Oh yeah. They re passing a bill that s going to make you guys like pawn shops. And I went, Uh oh. That is when Tanski contacted his representative, Todd Kiser. And H.B. 40 kept its antique dealer exemption. We owe everything to him, Tanski said. He helped us pull it off last year. He didn t ask for anything. In fact, he ran the risk of making the other legislators mad by stymieing them. So when Kiser, a republican from District 4, called again this year, saying that a last minute bill, H.B. 9, tried to bring antiques back into the Act, Tanski got mad. You gotta be kidding me, he said. These pawnshop guys are gonna tell me what I can See Backhand page 9 Sibling rivalry: House Bill 9 sought to remove the exemption of Utah antique dealers from the existing Pawnshop and Secondhand Merchandise Transaction Information Act. The bill, sponsored by Representative Rebecca Lockhart of Provo, was ultimately replaced with a substitute after a coalition of area antique dealers and likeminded lawmakers met with Lockhart. Antique dealers will continue to be exempt from the Act under the substitute legislation. What should you do?. Contact your State Represenative. See maps/amap.html and let them know about your business and that you support the current exemption on antique stores.. Contact District 64 Represenative Rebecca Lockhart (See the Box Below). Ask her the following questions 4. What was your intent with H.B. 9? 5. Why did you feel in necessary to remove the exemption for Antique Stores? 6. Are you looking to do it again next year?. Who did you get input from? 8. Did you consult anyone in the antiques business? If so, whom? 9. Any others you might feel necessary 0. These and other questions we asked Rebecca but by press time, she has failed to respond. Rebecca D. 9 march 008 page 9 Backhand to secondhand?: From Backhand page 8 do as an antique dealer? No way! With Kiser s help, Tanski organized an informal meeting with Lockhart. Several area dealers attended to voice their concern over the bill. Those present included Monica Zoltanski from Sisters Home, Stephanie Links from Pink Door, Dave Litvin from Litvin Art Gallery, Scott Evans from SLC Antiques, Gary Thompson, Tonya Mahood from Antionettes, and others. Tanski described the animated meeting as heated, but ultimately, worthwhile. Other dealers also indicated urging their own representatives to not support House Bill 9. Later that day, Lockhart substituted the existing bill for one that keeps the Antique dealer exemption intact. In 004, the California Pawnbrokers Association introduced legislation to expand the definition of second hand goods dealer in their pawnbrokering statute. It was defeated. That same legislation has appeared in one form or another in 005, 006 and 00. This is the second year this has come before the legislature in Utah. Will we see it next year? said Tanski. Count on it. 10 page 0 march 008 HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Deseret Antique Times Donnie Morris Editor Here at the DAT (The Deseret Antique Times), as we fondly call her, we have had a year of ups and downs, and all arounds. Here are some of our triumphs and failures from 00, our inaugural year.. Why did we name the paper The Deseret Antique Times? One of the early names proposed for the state of Utah was Deseret, so we named her Deseret. Antique is obvious, and the Times is for all the latest and greatest news in our business. Besides, it is always a great newspaper name. The Deseret News was already taken.. We have had the opportunity to get out and meet some wonderful people in the Utah Antiques market. We have highlighted many stores, including Round Valley Antiques of Scipio (our first in fact), Hills House in Downtown SLC, Eborn Books of West Valley, Carmen Miranda of SLC, The Copper Frog in Farmington, and the Pink Door / Sisters Home of Highland Dr in SLC, and many more. We have made many great friends along the way.. Some months the paper went as smoothly as a bald man s head, other months, it was the most torturous, stressful, and horrible experience ever. Each month is new and exciting, and we are enjoying it more and more. 4. The DAT has been a great outlet for our creative ideas and interests. Writing can be fun. Hint: we invite all dealers and collector s to submit articles and ideas for stories as well. 5. The newspaper has been exciting and unpredictable. Just like Kara promised me that our marriage would be. 6. We have increased our distribution to include about 0 hotels and inns in the Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah Counties, as well as continued distribution to all of the stores in Utah. They are also distributed at the antiques shows and auctions in the area.. Notice that there are no failures listed here. That is because we haven t had any, other than a few typos here and there. Ha ha. 008 is going to be even bigger and greater with even more new ideas coming. Thanks for the tremendous support and ideas, keep them coming. Donnie Morris Editor Below: The Proposed State of Deseret LIKE THE encased coin? The only way to get one is to subscribe to the Deseret Antique Times. Annual Subscriptions start at $4.00. Call (80)98-0 for more information. As part of our first birthday, we decided to create a limited collectible. Having dealt with Kelly Finnegan of Penny Press Mint previously, we contacted him to create for the Deseret Antique Times an encased collectible coin using the new 00 Utah quarter. Encased coins have been used as good for tokens by many retailers since the turn of the century. More often, nickels and pennies were encased, but dimes and quarters can be found as well. Used as tokens and good luck charms, these encased coins become quite collectible and often very valuable. The design of the casing follows the Deseret/Utah theme using the state beehive and motto on the front with the settlement and territorial dates (see front cover for image). The reverse, pictured above, shows the Golden Spike Utah quarter and the Deseret Antique Times logo, destined to be a modern collectible. One for your collection and mine. Looking to do your own encased coin or token? Contact the PENNY PRESS MINT PO Box 6 Spanish Fork, UT USA (80)98.68 pennypressmint@yahoo.com

Each row, column and block (x) must contain the numbers to 9 without repeating. Some spaces are filled in to give you a hand, but remember, there is only one possible solution for each sudoku, so be careful.
