1 Teacher Guide the Christmas ree Chapter One by Kay Hively Mary Jo shook all the water out of the old tomato can. She Mary Jo could not understand why it rained on their farm would need every drop to save the Christmas tree. but not on the Carter farm. Just one good rain had made the difference. Her family would have a crop, but the Carters had As she watched the water disappear into the ground, Mary Jo no cotton to pick. buttoned her sweater. A stiff north wind shook the dark green branches of the little tree. Winter was on its way. Mary Jo looked out at the fields behind the house. They were white, with little speckles of brown, showing where some cotton In only a moment, the water that had stood around the tree bolls had not yet opened. Her daddy had said they were lucky was gone. The small puddle of mud was now blowing dust. to have a crop. Classroom Extensions Things to Think About and Do A. Why was the Carter family moving to California? How many states will they drive through to get to California? On a map, locate the capitals of all the states the Carters will drive through. B. Have you ever seen a cotton field? What happens to cotton when it is taken out of the fields? Look at the tags on your clothes and see if any of them are made with cotton. 2 Make Your Own Book Use the following directions to compile The Christmas Tree into your own booklet. Page 1 Title Page Write the title, author and illustrator on card stock with a picture that illustrates the title of the story. Page 2 Table of Contents As you read each chapter, record the chapter name on this page. Pages 3-10 The Story Cut each chapter from the newspaper, then glue it to a piece of paper. Arrange the pages in sequential order. Pages Glossary Complete the glossary of terms. As you read each chapter, locate unknown words. Discuss possible meanings by using context clues. Look up the words in the dictionary and write the appropriate definition on the glossary page. Page 14 Back Cover Use a piece of card stock for the back cover, then staple all of the pages into a booklet. You also could use a binder, rings, or yarn to attach the pages.

7 The Christmas Tree Chapter 1 1. Why was the Carter family moving? Use at least two details to support your answer. 2. How did Mary Jo feel about the Carter family leaving? Use details from the story to support your answer. 3. Why did Mary Jo s father feel lucky? 4. Look through your newspaper for pictures of living organisms that need water. Use your pictures to create a poster of living organisms. 5. What crop did Mary Jo s family grow? What crops would you see growing in your state? Why do we plant different crops in different areas? 6. The Carters were moving from Mississippi to California. On a road map, trace the shortest distance from Mississippi to California. What roads would you take? How many miles would you drive?

8 7. List at least five proper nouns from this chapter and write them in the first column of the chart below. Locate more proper nouns in your newspaper and cut and paste them in the same column. 9 The Christmas Tree Chapter 2 1. Why was Mary Jo so concerned about her tree? Use details from the story to explain your answer. 2. What did Mr. Brady teach Mr. Drake? How did they accomplish their goal? 3. Mary Jo s father said they d have to conserve water. What other items can be conserved? In your local newspaper, look for examples of ways people CONSERVE and WASTE natural resources. With a green crayon, circle ways people conserve natural resources. With a red crayon, circle ways people waste natural resources. Discuss your choices with your classmates. 4. Mac, Morey and Mary Jo all start with the letter M. When an author uses the same initial consonant in words of a story or poem, it is called alliteration. Locate several words from you local newspaper that begin with the same letter, and then use them to create a poem.

What products could be made from the Drake family s crops? 4. Use context clues to describe what bare-handed means. Locate at least five other hyphenated words in your local newspaper. Cut and paste the words on a separate sheet of paper. Then, use context clues to describe what each word means. 5. List the negative and positive aspects of picking cotton. Use details from the story to support your answer. 6. Why do you think Mr. Drake weighed the cotton before dumping it into the wagon? Look through your local newspaper for pictures and words of items that are weighed. Cut and paste them on a separate sheet of paper. Describe why each item is weighed.

Use details from the story to support your answer. 3. What is a cotton gin? Who invented the cotton gin? Use an encyclopedia or the Internet to research your answer. 4. If you were Mary Jo, would you water your tree? Explain your answer. 5. What types of transportation have been mentioned in the story so far? Use the methods of transportation to help make an inference about when the story took place. 6. How does the author use personification to describe Mary Jo s Christmas tree?

Compare and contrast their way of washing and drying clothes to the way your family washes and dries clothes today. 2. Bedroll, outhouse, and dishpan are compound words in chapter five. What do you think each word means? Locate more compound words in your local newspaper. According to the story, Mary Jo didn t dare ask for a toy for Christmas. Why not? 5. What types of products could be found at a general store? What store would you compare a general store to today? In your local newspaper, locate words and pictures of items that could have been purchased in a general store. Cut and paste the products on a separate sheet of paper. Describe changes that have been made to the products over the years.

14 The Christmas Tree Chapter 7 1. How did Mary Jo feel about Mr. Weaver witching? Use details from the story to explain your answer. 2. How did Mary Jo help out around the house? How are your chores different from her chores? 3. If you earned money from a job, what would you buy? Why? 4. Predict how you think Mr. Weaver might help Mary Jo. Do you think Mary Jo should help? Why or why not? 5. What are some signs that a plant or tree needs water? What else does a plant need? Why? 6. Mary Jo said it was more important to have drinking water than to have a Christmas tree. Her family needs water and Mary Jo wants a Christmas tree. Look for examples of NEEDS and WANTS in your local newspaper. Cut, paste, and label them on a separate sheet of paper.

15 The Christmas Tree Chapter 8 1. Find a picture or an article in your local newspaper about someone who has a natural gift. Cut and paste the picture or article on a separate sheet of paper and describe the person s natural gift. 2. Describe how Mr. Weaver used branches to find water. 3. What did Mr. Weaver say was the secret to water witching? How could you use his advice in your daily life? 4. Mary Jo put her trust in Mr. Weaver even though she did not know his plans. Describe a time when you were expected to trust someone. 5. What two names did Mr. Weaver call the peach branch he used for water witching? What else did Mr. Weaver say could be used? 6. Mr. Weaver kept his promise. Look through your local newspaper for ads promising something. Cut out at least three ads and paste them on a separate piece of paper, then describe what each ad promises.
