What and who do you plan to TEACH in the next few days? Who did you ENCOURAGE in your club? Was it a young member? Or someone you taught to expand their lapidary skills? How and who did you ACCOMMODATE this past month? A handicapped member? A person new to the area? Who MENTORed whom? Are new members being taught the whys and wherefores of your club s ways? And SUPPORT? Did someone in your club need a helping hand? A vote of confidence? A push in a different more productive direction? Speaking of support, did your club write a letter to the feds regarding the invertebrate fossil collecting law coming up? Did your club sign the one from the RMFMS that came in your ? Thanks to those who did. All of us need to know about this ruling, should it come to pass, and do what we can to prevent such stringent enforcement of policies as the Canon City club faced when an armed BLM officer and his assistant met the club at a field trip site and told them (including the children) that collecting coprolites was illegal because they are remains of vertebrates! Personally I think that is taking the term vertebrate too far! Most books classify coprolites as TRACE FOSSILS. But this might be our future, if we don t show some force on this issue. The RMFMS convention is coming up soon in mid-march, Albuquerque. The packet for the convention is in this newsletter. I encourage you all to travel to warmer climes (if you are from the northland) and join us for a rip-roaring good time in Albuquerque. Plan to bring a competitive case! For various reasons, the number of competitive exhibits has dropped over the past years. How are others to know of the great talent that exists in our group of rock hounds if we don t strut our stuff? Keeping your collection in drawers and closets at home does not spread the knowledge and excitement of discovery in our hobby. M" could also be for field trip management. Field trip management cannot be loosy-goosy, come and go, or don t if you get out of bed wrong the appointed day. The Grand Junction club uses the online Meetup site for members to sign up for trips. Each trip is limited to 15 members, but repeated during the season. The Lake George club sends blasts to notify members that trip signups are open with the number of limitations for each trip posted. Members respond to the leader of the trip. With the club s hundreds of members, trips often close in a matter of minutes. Some trips are limited to beginners only. Colorado Mineral has an annual field trip sign-up meeting, during which all the trips are announced, described, and the sign-up rosters laid on the tables. It s a rockhound s rush with pushing of elbows to get your name on the list for the trip you want to attend. What works for your club? How have you solved the problems of managing your field trips? A BIG thank you to Jim McGarvey for stepping to the plate to serve as interim RMFMS editor. Expect to be harassed until we find someone to become the permanent editor of the newsletter. Once set up, it doesn t take too much time to format the articles that come in, the information about officers, and the show information. Then it s a click of a button and the RMFMS news goes out to the region and the world. Treasurer s Report- By RMFMS Treasurer, Gene Maggard The main treasurer activity going on right now is getting all the member clubs to turn in their annual report, dues, and insurance. Out of 78 active clubs, 14 have not yet sent in their annual report. Two clubs, the Arizona Leaverites and the Hutchinson (KS) Gem and Mineral, report that they are disbanding. We have gained one club, the Sublette (WY) County Rock Hound Club. I will send out one more late notice by , then start telephoning. Otherwise folks here in Kansas are just waiting for spring to arrive. Freezing rain on the way this weekend, Jan. 13. Hope you folks in the warm weather are enjoying it. January 2017 Page 1
2 Vice President s Message - By RMFMS Vice President, Liz Thomas Beth Simmons, President of the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies has asked me to help lead and communicate with the PLAC as well as the State Directors. I hope I can help and guide in a very favorable way. I also want to hear from each of you on a monthly basis. I would like to try out a new plan of action so we can get information out to all the clubs within RMFMS. I would like for you to submit a short paragraph monthly or so to be put in the newsletter. The PLAC has already been sending out a lot of information and I will be soon getting this out to the new newsletter person to put this into an article. I will be sending this information out to all the clubs so they will be enlightened about what is happening with the BLM as well as other agencies. It may or may not pertain to them but at least when and if they go to these locations they can now what to expect. The State Directors, may I suggest some items that would be nice to hear about. Perhaps about a show, some great program they saw, or a good field trip a club hosted. It could even be some issue that has reared up that would help another club if that same issue came about in their club. There does not have to be an article about every club in your region, but sometime during the year I would like something on every club in your area. If you have any comments or concerns about this please feel free to contact me via . I am really hoping that we can get a lot of information from both parties out to our clubs so that they can get more information about rock hunting, club facts and issues and ideas for their own clubs. Thank You, Liz Thomas AFMS ENDOWMENT FUND DeLane Cox and I are the Rocky Mountain Federation Regional Chairs for the AFMS Endowment Fund. Cheryl Neary, a member of the Eastern Federation, is the AFMS Endowment Fund Chair. Basically, this is a raffle drawing with tickets being sold at $5 each or five tickets for $20. People from around the American Federation donate prizes for the raffle they may be jewelry, crystal, mineral, fossils, books, or other items, the value of which range generally from $75 to $200. The drawing will be handled so that there is at least one winner from each of the seven regional federations; last year we had I believe five winners from the Rocky Mountain Federation. Several donations have been made so far and can be viewed on the American Federation Web site <amfed.org>. When you go to that site, click on Home, then on Endowment Fund on the left side, then on 2017 on the left side. You will see that some truly beautiful items have been donated and there will be more to come; generally there are about 30 or more items. This is a major way to financially support the American Federation s efforts on behalf of our hobby. Over $5,000 was raised last year. Cheryl requests that the checks be sent to the regional chairs so that we may issue tickets and have a record of who has entered. Checks should be made payable to the AFMS Endowment Fund. We then forward those checks to Pat LaRue, the AFMS Treasurer. DeLane and I will fill out the proper number of tickets for each contribution, send the stubs to the donating individual, and get the tickets to the AFMS Show in Venture, California in June to be put into the RMFMS bag. We will also the Endowment Fund Raffle tickets for sale at the RMFMS Show in Albuquerque this March. There will be at least one general prize ticket, maybe two or three, drawn from each of the bags for the seven regional federations. After that, all tickets will be dumped into one bag, and further drawings will take place until all the prizes have been awarded. I hope that many of you will participate and hopefully be winners in California; you need not be present to win. I would also be happy to accept any donated prizes for the raffle; the more prizes, the more winners, and hopefully, more money raised. I have donated a framed fossil fish and insect specimen myself. Our contact information is provided below. Please share this information with your club members and thanks for you consideration. Richard D. Jaeger DeLane Cox 3515 E. 88 th St Spanker Ridge Dr. Tulsa, OK Bentonville, AR RjgrSci@aol.com <Delanec3@earthlink.com> AFMS Scholarship Foundation: Five Rocky Mountain Federation clubs have donated a total of $717 to the AFMS Scholarship Foundation during the first two months of the fiscal year. The donations received are as follows: Shawnee Gem & Mineral Club - $ Stillwater Mineral and Gem - $50 as a memorial to Evelyn Copley. Tulsa Rock and Mineral - $ White Mountain Gem & Mineral Club - $100 as a memorial to Ruth King. Wichita Gem & Mineral a donation of $100 given by Gene & Peggy Maggard as a memorial to Kim Kristalyn and credited to the Wichita club. I wish to thank all of above for their contributions to the AFMS Scholarship Foundation. I hope that a number of your clubs will make donations during our 2016/2017 fiscal year. Remember that $48,000 in scholarships is provided each year to graduate students in the GeoSciences through our Foundation. This will included two $4000 scholarships given to students at an institution in our Rocky Mountain Federation. The total amount of scholarships given out since the inception of the Foundation is now over $1.75 million. Richard Jaeger, RMFMS Scholarship Committee Chairman January 2017 Page 2
3 All American Club Contest Hey, Fellow Rockhounds. Is your club doing anything this year? Did you have a Show? Or any field trips? Displays in other places? Great guest speakers? One of the nice things about going to the American Federation meeting is talking to people from other clubs across the nation and seeing what all they are doing. And there are some very active clubs out there! Is your club aware of the All American Club Contest? This is all about what your club is doing, how it is doing it, and what the results are. In other words, it is a record of what your club has done for the year. The All American Club contest has a judging sheet that is pretty easy to follow. It gives some suggestions about how to put together a scrapbook of the events for the year that can be submitted to the contest. Not hard. Simple. Fun job. The Judging Form for 2015 can be found at the AmFed.org website under Forms..All American Club Contest. It is full of information about what is needed for the scrap book. But, somebody has to DO it! And submit it for judging. Right now, every club president should be reading this and thinking of how your club can get into this contest. You are doing things, so why not brag a bit. Get a member to do this. Download the AFMS score sheet and put together that scrapbook of your adventures this year. Then, mail it to me by February 15 so it can be judged for the Rocky Mountain Federation convention in Albuquerque in May. Top three winners will be forwarded on to the American Federation judges for the AFMS show in California in June. OK,...time is short. But your club has done the things. And I ll bet someone has been taking pictures, too. Get that scrapbook put together. And, when you get it back, remember to keep it in your club library for everyone to see. It is your historical record for years to come. Might as well win a prize for it, too. Send the completed scrap book to DeLane Cox, 8152 Spanker Ridge Drive, Bentonville, AR I will take good care of it, and judge it well. There s a New Club in Town On Saturday, June 4, 2016, thirty -nine people attended the first meeting for the Sulette County Rock Hounds Club which occurred at the Southwest Sublette Senior Citizen Center in Marbleton with assistance from Stan Strike, Richard Heumier, and Melvin Gustin. This first meeting introduced Jim Gray as President, Mike Schaffer as Vice President, Debby Jess as Secretary, and Leane Gray as Treasurer. A silent auction generated $130 from generous donations from the Riverton rock club, Ava's Rock Shop in Thermopolis, J L Gray Rock Shop in Marbleton, and others. As of this date, the club has 28 memberships, single and family, representing 51 people. On June 11, nineteen club members went on a field trip to the Blue Forest in Southwest Wyoming. Many nice small pieces were collected. For at least one of the members this was the first opportunity to go rock hunting with others who could identify the rocks and teach her what to look for and what to leave. The next meeting will be July 16 at The Bench Grrill in Marbleton at 1:00 pm. At this meeting the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws will be reviewed, a future field trip schedule will be developed, and a time for members to show off things they have recently collected. Report from the Sublette County Rock Hounds Club, June 24, by Leane Gray WHY ALL WSMGS CLUBS SHOULD BE INCORPORATED & RMFMS MEMBERS Club Liability Check- IF your club is NOT incorporated OR current with the required Annual Report with the Wyoming Secretary of State AND members of the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies you might consider this information: Limited Liability - Your club can be named in a lawsuit! If your club is incorporated, under the law, creditors and courts are limited to the assets of the nonprofit organization. The original incorporators/ founders, board members, members, & employees are not personally liable for the Club s debts meaning their own money, houses, cars, or property is not at risk. There are exceptions: A person cannot use the corporation to shield illegal or irresponsible acts on their part. Also the Board of Directors have a fiduciary responsibility- if they do not perform their jobs in the nonprofit s best interest, and the nonprofit is harmed, they can be held liable. [Wyoming Secretary of State Annual Incorporation Cost = $25 / year] If your club is NOT registered as an incorporated nonprofit corporation and current with the required WY Secretary of State s Annual Report, your club AND it s members may be legally liable if subject to a lawsuit. (Contact the WSMGS Board with questions about how to incorporate your club.) RMFMS Liability Coverage -This general liability insurance provides protection for RMFMS affiliated clubs (who purchase this insurance) from third party nonmember individuals who allege to be injured/damaged because of your club s negligence. It does protect the club resulting from its member s participation in club or RMFMS/WSMGS sponsored activities. Club members are defined as all recorded members of the club regardless of their classification (junior, adult, honorary/life), including all new members recorded after the initial yearly liability insurance payment is made to the RMFM. The RMFMS liability insurance does not cover damage or injury from: Your personal negligence in regard to yourself or the alleged negligence of other club members to each other or to club property. Car/airplane/boat accidents while on club/rmfms/wsmgs sponsored activities. Nonmember guests participating in club/rmfms/wsmgs sponsored activities (coverage may be approved upon legal review (case by case). Sponsored activities in which negligence occurs in conjunction with alcohol consumption. Pollutants Continued Page 4 January 2017 Page 3
4 WHY ALL WSMGS CLUBS SHOULD BE INCORPORATED & RMFMS MEMBERS (Continued from Page 3) Willful acts except protection of persons or property. The RMFMS will provide a Certificate of Insurance as proof of liability insurance & Additional Insured rider that may be required by landowners, hotels, meeting places or other facilities utilized for club/rmfms/wsmgs sponsored activities. Allow 2 months for this approval from RMFMS insurance carrier. RMFMS Costs: Membership = $1.50/member + Insurance = $0.60/ member]. (Referenced from the Wyoming State M&G, Inc. Jade State News, November 2012-Page 4) Golden Diggers Junior Rockhounding Club located in Golden, Colorado What a fantastic fall! The leaves have fallen, and our mining friends are down from the heights of Mt. Antero and Mt. White for the season. Everyone is soaking and cleaning away on the findings from this year. This is an end of season ritual for rockhounders in the Northern climates. This reality is so painful for some of us. We have been known to stash away five gallon buckets of material just so we can relive the "discovery" when there is two feet of snow on the ground! Another end worth mentioning is the conclusion of the first year of activities of the Golden Diggers Junior Rockhounding Club located in Golden, Colorado. They are part of the Denver Gem and Mineral Guild. Starting with just one child, they have grown to a group of 12 children in one short year. Group leader Mary Lou Mobley reports of a fantastic first year that included an extensive summer program. Travel included multiple locations in Colorado and New Mexico. Children ages 4 to 13 conquered mountain terrain, lava tubes, and underground ladders in the quest for more rocks. Safety was always on mind. The children were trained in safety procedures. Each given a whistle, and taught to find their way back to the group upon separation. I am proud to report a summer relatively free of injury. One single incident with a cactus spoiled a perfect record! In addition to a great year outside, the group excelled inside as well. The Diggers accumulated two awards in their first year. Top honors in the junior display at the Denver Gem and Mineral Guild s 2016 Show. And the RMFMS award for Junior Education Exhibit. Congrats to Mary Lou on a great year! The Diggers started with one single child. We have clubs in the RMFMS that are in that same place. But as I have seen firsthand that one child can be the beginning of something special for the adult members of your club. As adults, it is our responsibility to lead these children and share our knowledge. Encourage your junior members to exhibit at regional shows, publish articles, and be a part of adult member activities. They, after all, are the future members and officers to take us into the future. I need to hear from you! Please let me know of awards, special finds and achievements so we can give credit to those kids, and they get their name in print too. A few shout-outs for this month include Junior winners from the 2016 Denver Gem and Mineral Show. Hunter Kokkinen- Junior Prospector Trophy- Celestine/Calcite from Utah Evan Walsh- Best Fossil- Trilobite Congrats to Hunter and Evan!! Rock on everyone! Terri Harris, RMFMS Junior Activities Chairman, SeeingEagle@comcast.net ALIAS ADDRESSES In 2014, the Wyoming State Mineral and Gem (WSMGS) established Alias Addresses for each of the WSMGS board members and the WSMGS affiliated clubs. This was done to provide privacy for our members personal addresses and to insure continued yearly contact with each of the WSMGS affiliated clubs. An alias address can be compared to a post office box that is assigned to an individual board member or rock club. The address or box number remains the same year after year but the people assigned to pick up the mail may change yearly as new officers are elected. In order for this alias system to be set up, the WSMGS contracts with an internet provider (ipage) that allows unlimited addresses. Our WSMGS webmaster enters these assigned alias addresses into ipage and links each alias to an individual WSMGS Board member s personal and to each WSMGS affiliated club contacts personal address. As each of the WSMGS affiliated clubs renew their yearly memberships, they are required to list their officers and 2-4 individuals they wish to serve as WSMGS contacts. These club contacts provide their personal addresses, which are linked to the club s alias address. These alias addresses are published in the Wyoming Jade State News and on the WSMGS website [wsmgs.org]. The alias addresses allow communication between clubs and the WSMGS Board members as well as the RMFMS and the AFMS. Because each WSMGS affiliated club has more than one contact, information relevant to the club becomes the responsibility of more than one individual. In this age of spamming by web spiders and web bots and personal information being hacked, the WSMGS recommends all organizational societies and clubs begin to use Alias Addresses for intercommunication with its members. 5 RMFMS Annual Convention and Show Sponsored by the Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Club Greeting All, My name is Bob Regner and I am currently President of the Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Club (AGMC) and the RMFMS Convention Chair for the 2017 convention. In 2017 the AGMC will be hosting the annual RMFMS convention here in Albuquerque. I would like to invite and welcome every club in the Rocky Mountain Federation to send delegates to this years convention. We are working hard to make this a great and memorable convention/vacation for all attendees. We are planning several activities to go along with the convention to include some speakers and several field trips. These trips will be limited to registered guests at the convention an their immediate families. The claim owners of the Blanchard mines have graciously agreed to allow a private trip there lead by our own Ray DeMark. This trip will be held the day after the convention, Monday March 20th. If you have never been, believe me it will be worth staying the extra day. If you are interested in going on this trip, please bring your tools including hard hat and mining lamp. I am working on a Sunday trip to go to a mine known as Nacimiento. This mines dump piles are scheduled to be covered by this time next year so this may be your last chance to collect here. If you do not know what minerals come from these locations, please look them up and I believe you will want to go on both of these trips. The convention coincides with our annual Treasures of the Earth Show. I have been told by quite a few of our vendors that this is one of the best shows that they attend every year. I am guessing it must be true since there is a 4 year waiting period and a very high retention rate on our vendors. We have a great crew that makes it great show every year. Watch future newsletters for information on the entire convention packet which will be on our website: After downloading, fill it out and return it to us right away. I am hoping that when the convention is over that you will all have great memories and will be happy that you came to it. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions and I look forward to seeing every one of you. From the Editor of the RMFMS Newsletter I appreciate the articles that have been sent to me for publication in this January 2017 edition of the newsletter. As webmaster, I have set up an address on the RMFMS.ORG website so that articles can be sent to the editor. That address ( editor@rmfms.org ) is where any future article should be sent. This address will automatically be forwarded to the current editor of the newsletter (at present, that s me). In the future they will be forwarded to whomever takes my place. By having this address, you will never have to change to whom you send articles, it will always be (editor@rmfms.org). As you can see, the format for the newsletter has changed that s because I m not as familiar with the Publisher program as the last editor. I hope it s satisfactory for you. Hopefully as I learn, I will be better able to work with different formats. I appreciate your indulgence! Jim McGarvey, hopefully a temporary editor! January 2017 Page 10
