FENTON FINDERS OF GREATER KANSAS CITY The meeting of the Fenton Finders of Greater Kansas City will be SATURDAY, JULY 13 TH, 2013 at the Raytown City Hall, E. 59th, and Raytown, Missouri. The meeting will start at 7:00 P.M. For all who do not know long time member Sarah Plummer recently had cateract surgery. The surgery went very well and she was enjoying being able to see bright colors again when she noticed that the colors were turning gray. Her eye doctor sent her to her regular doctor who found that her blood pressure was going up. He sent her to the hospital and it now appears that she is almost completely blind. For any of you who would like to send her a card or contact her the address 1

at the rehab facilty that she was at is: Sarah Plummer c/o Woodside Rehabilitation Center 1040 Pilgrim Way, Room 529 Green Bay, WI Please let her know that she is in our thoughts and prayers. According to the information I was given Sarah has hypertensive retinopathy which is sometimes incurable. Hopefully that means that it is also sometimes curable. Let us all hope for the best. If she is not still in the rehab center you should be able to contact her at her home address. Our meeting in June was relaxed and fun. There was a large collection of multi color glass brought in by our members. I was somewhat disappointed inted that no one brought in one of the number 549 candlesticks with two different colors of glass. They are a favorite of mine even though I am not lucky enough to own a pair. However there was two of the old mosaic glass pieces that the European glassmakers created for Fenton in the 1920 s, a vase and a bowl, and while I have not found any pictures of the bowl in any of my books there are drawings that look like it. These two special items along with the many other pieces of glass that our members brought in more than made up for any disappointment I felt. Check out the pictures on pages four and five to see the glass brought b in for the program and show and tell. 2

Has everyone received their regristation forms for the Gala? Janet Wilke has sent them out and if you have checked them out you can see that like always we will have a lot going on. You will need to make your reservation with the Embassy Suites at for Sept. 19 th, 20 th and 21 st soon to get the Gala rate. When you make the reservation be sure to tell them you are with h Fenton Glass to get the that rate. Also when you send in your regristation form to Janet Wilke be sure to indicate if you are selling glass. Joy Livengood who works with the hotel for us makes sure that everyone who is selling glass in on the second floor to make it easy to shop the rooms. Do not forget to mark your form on rather or not you want to set up a small display table. We only have 19 tables so it will have to be first come first serve on this. While we do not judge the tables. We feel that t any and all tables are first prize winners - after all how can you judge glass that was made in the 1920 s against glass made in the 1980 s? Or compare a table of Alley Cats to a table of Robert Barber Glass? We will give every table a piece of glass as a a thank you for all the work you have to do to bring the glass to Kansas City, of course, for all of you who are going to the national conventions it would be easy to keep everything packed and ready to be displayed in Kansas City. Truthfully my glass is i s already packed and ready to be displayed. Okay there are a lot of things that I do not care to do at the last minute and packing my glass is one. For everyone who has glass in our auction Saturday morning you have hopefully already sent in your list and d pictures of your glass to Steve and Connie Duncan. If not please get them to Steve and Connie 3

4

Show and tell 5

as soon as possible. That way they can complete the auction list and send us the numbers to place on the clean glass. The list wil be placed on our website by Bernie Johnston as well as the pictures so we can get a look at all the glass that will be for sale. s Jim Wroda will aso have the pictures on his website so we can get the greatest amount of advertizing for your glass so we have the best chance to get a good price for your glass and I have the best chance of picking out the glass that I want early and d start saving my money. Plans are already being made for the hospititly room; on how much barbeque to order, how many plates, forks, spoons, and just what kind of supplies that we will need for the three days that we will be opened. As you may know the hospititly room will open before the Gala starts so anyone who comes in early will have a place to sit and visit with others while waiting for the hotel to get their rooms ready for them. There will be food and drinks ready for you as well as good conversation. So if you have a special treat or dish that you would like to share with us be sure and plan to bring your treat to us. We have always been very lucky that so many of you share your special treats with us and I hope that will continue. If you get a chance to come in early this is a good chance to visit with old friends and make some new friends before the Gala starts. Richard Speaight may have retired from the position of president for our club but he is still in charge of the big display that we have every year. This year the display will feature 150 or more pieces of glass. The theme will be A Centennial of Glass Making

based on the Revised & Expanded 2 nd Edition by Debbie and Randy Coe. If you have any glass that is featured in the book and would like to share the glass with us let Richard know so he can plan which pieces that he will use. Remember that there will be less l than 200 pieces of glass on the display so he will have to be very picky on what he will use. So get your list to him soon. For our meeting in July Melvin Lampton will be giving a program on Orient and Flume Art Glass. Orient and Flume Art Glass was started by Douglas Boyd when he purchased a old carriage house in Chico California in The house was located between the streets of Orient and Flume and Boyd transformed the it into a art glass studio. Boyd had his artists work on creating or we should say recreating the silver-luster luster of turn of the century glass artists like Tiffany, Steuben and Loetz. By 1973 the carriage e house was getting too small for the growing business and was relocated to 2161 Park Avenue. If you would like to see some examples of this wonderful glass just enter Orient and Flume Art Glass and their website will come up and you will be see some of the t wonderful glass that they have created. Their website features two glass artists, Bruce Sillars and Scott Beyers. If you get t the chance please check them and their creations out. For the glass hungry collectors in our club this should be a wonderful chance to learn more about other glass companies and the glass that they make. Their art glass is really out of this world. Please take a minute or two to check them out before our meeting so that you 7

can enjoy Melvin s presentation even more. It will be well worth the time you spent checking them out. Have a safe and happy Forth of July and be sure to come to the meetin on the 13 th and learn more about the wonderful glass of Orient and Flume. Be sure to being glass for show and tell. It does not have to be something new that you just found but something special that you would like to share with the rest of us to help us learn more about Fenton or other makes of glass.
