1 Hello Millersburg Glass Association Members, Presidents Letter In Ohio we are getting ready for a few cold winter months. Not my favorite time of year. I would like to say that the Millersburg Fall Gathering was very exciting and a huge success. We had several members from other states and Canada that came to the gathering and to Saturday s auction. It was really nice to see everyone at the gathering sitting around visiting and sharing stories from the past. I especially would like to thank my wife, all board members and officers for all the work and time they give throughout the year to make this gathering a huge success. I would like to thank Jim Wroda, his family and staff for bringing to Millersburg another great auction on the courthouse lawn. I would like to thank the Antique Festival committee for allowing us to have the courthouse lawn for the auction. My wife and I were honored to have John and Patricia Rogers from North Carolina visit and spend the night with us. They are truly two wonderful people. I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who donated glass for the fundraiser. John and Robin Buren, Larry and Marcene Cullins, Ben Hershberger Antiques, Ernest and Barbara Hershberger, Aaron and Arlene Hurst, Skip and Bony Huelga, Jack and Lola Johnson, Steve and Gail Maag, Raymond and Laurie Miller, Gregg and Susan Oswald, Margaret Ports, Jim and Laurie Wroda and the Joneses. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Thank You, Randy Jones While at the wwwcga convention in Ashville this year I was able to purchase a piece of Millersburg glass that I have never seen or read about from one of the dealers setting up his glass for sale. It is a beautiful marigold Country Kitchen bowl 8 1/4 wide. It is very dark radium finish with the edge tuned up to a maximum height of 1 3/4. Actually the top edge appears to be turned in slightly, wanting to be a rose bowl. I am attaching a photo and ask all the Millersburg members if they have a matching or similar piece in their collection. Keep on hunting. Did you hear what was in The Barrel <<<<<<<<< Thanks, Lance Hilkene Dues are Due... Did you remember to send in your dues for 2015?? We don t want you to miss out on all the Millersburg Action!
2 Grandma s Piece of Millersburg This is the story of a happening that occurred in my early years of collecting Millersburg glass. The story begins with the last evening that my wife (Laurie) and I went to visit her elderly grandmother. Grandma wasn t able to be up and around much and we spent a nice quiet evening visiting with her as she lay on her bed, too weak to move, but still able to visit with us and Laurie s mom and dad. As we were preparing to leave, I sauntered over to the corner hutch that was filled with grandma s glass etc. In the hutch there was a some china, quite a bit of depression glass, a couple hen-on-nests and other miscellaneous trinkets etc. Of course I was scoping it out to see if there was any Millersburg glass included and I had almost given up when I noticed something tucked into the corner partially hidden by the frame of the hutch and door. The first thing that caught my eye was the hobnails. Now I knew that Fenton made a lot of hobnail pieces and my first thoughts were that it s probably a Fenton piece. The lighting in the room was very soft and the hutch was at the opposite side of the room from where the lights were on. I quietly summoned Laurie to my side and asked her to get her little flashlight out of her purse. She succeeded in doing that and as I shone the light into the corner, I could see that indeed it was a Millersburg Hobnail Spittoon. At about this time my heart starting beating a little faster as I tried to determine what color it was. After trying to shine the light on the piece at different angles I was able to determine that it was a Green Hobnail Spittoon. Now remember, this was in the early years of my collecting and I was still learning a lot about the glass. I had seen some Hobnail pieces but this was the first green spittoon that I had ever seen. I knew green was the rarest color of them and I couldn t wait to get home and get out the books and see what the value was etc. After looking at the price guides I was quite excited, as this piece was more valuable than any other piece of Millersburg in my collection at that time. So, now we knew that Grandma had this piece of glass, but there really wasn t much to about it for the time being. Grandma peacefully passed away about 2 weeks after our last visit with her. At the time of her death she had been living in her own little living area attached to the house of one of her daughters. Before moving to that little suite she had dispersed of most of the belongings that she and grandpa had accumulated. She only kept several pieces of furniture, such as her favorite rocking chair, her kitchenware, and this one small corner hutch of her nice things. I expected there would not be enough possessions to have an estate auction and I kept wondering what would actually happen with the rest of her earthly possessions. Shortly after her funeral it was decided that there would not be an auction and her belongings would be divided among her 10 children, which included Laurie s dad. Of course, Laurie s mom and dad were made aware of this certain piece of glass and they said they would see what they could do. There were other glass collectors in the family as well and there was just no way of knowing how it would all play out. Now I will have to step back in time a little in the story. Laurie s mom and dad lived on the home farm and grandma and grandpa had also lived there in a separate small house. After grandpa passed away, was when grandma moved to her daughter s place. When Laurie was a young girl she and her sister would often spend time over in the little house with grandma. One thing she often did was stand behind the sewing machine and she and grandma would sing as grandma sewed. Apparently these times were precious to grandma as well. So, now we jump forward again to the time after grandma s funeral. When her will was opened and read there were some unexpected things included in it. In her will she specifically stated that the three grandchildren that she lived with at the time of her death and also Laurie and her younger sister are supposed to each pick a piece of her glass before the rest of her belongings were dispersed. When this news was related to us, we were pleasantly surprised and excited. But wait, how will this turn out? It was determined that the other three grandchildren would be selecting their items before Laurie and her sister. Would this one piece of Millersburg be taken before Laurie got the chance to select? I guess there isn t much we can do about it. And another thing that played into the situation was this. Grandma had some very nice pink depression pieces and truthfully at that time, Laurie probably liked that glass better than carnival glass. Now, let s be clear, I told Laurie that it was her grandma, and her grandma s glass and she shall pick whatever piece she wants. It does not have to be the Millersburg piece if she would rather have a depression piece or something else. Well the other three grandchildren made their selections and the day came for Laurie and her sister to go select theirs. Apparently the others also liked the depression glass too, as the Millersburg piece was still in the hutch when it was time to make her selection. And yes, she did select the green hobnail spittoon as her keepsake from grandma s earthly possessions. To make it even more special, grandma had put a small note about the piece inside the spittoon. Currently that piece is not the most expensive piece in our collection, but it has by far the most sentimental value to us. If the time comes that we would ever sell our collection, this piece would definitely not be included. We would hope to keep this piece in our family for many generations to come. 3 The 3rd gathering of the Millersburg Glass Association was held Oct 3, 2014 at The Hotel Millersburg. Approximately 40 members attended. Finger foods were provided by the club and the hotel had an open bar. The evening was spent socializing and telling stories. While visiting around the room I talked to several members on where or what they did that day. Some chose to drive around and see the sites and the colorful leaves, even though it was cold and rainy, and others chose to tour the Millersburg Glass Museum which adjoins the Victorian House. Some members told me they went to some of our local antique shops. I guess it takes someone from out of town to find a great piece of glass, a crystal peacock blank compote. Sometimes treasures are found in your own backyard. It was great to see old friends and meet new ones. Hope to see you at the gathering next year. By Lola Johnson Board member The Millersburg Glass Association had a great fundraiser on Saturday, Oct 4, 2014 during the Holmes County Antique Festival. Lot 181 of the Jim Wroda Auction of Millersburg Glass was a barrel full of Millersburg Glass! There was a lot of anticipation to see what the unknown contents would bring! Only one person knew what all was in the barrel (Randy Jones packed it). We all knew that there were 15 pieces and each of us that donated a piece obviously knew at least what one of the items was. Thanks to member Larry Cullen for donating the barrel! An original factory stencil was used to label the barrel. It probably looked very similar to what the original shipped product looked like. After some spirited bidding, Greg and Susan Oswald, who own the Millersburg Glass Collectibles store right across the street from the Courthouse were the winning bidders at $3000. Somehow, they restrained themselves from opening it right away. They opened the barrel the next day after the Grand Parade of the festival. They were very excited to see what they were getting! There was a lot of straw (diaper and bubble wrap too). The first piece to come out of the barrel was a green Cosmos, then a crystal Country Kitchen chop plate, then a very pretty dark marigold Whirling Leaves bowl, then a marigold Peacock Variant compote, then a green Holly bowl, then an amethyst Rosalind bowl, then a crystal Ohio Star compote in a rosebowl shape, then a three in one edge amethyst Grape Wreath bowl, then a crystal salver shape Potpourri compote, then a tight crimped marigold Grape Wreath bowl, then a marigold Primrose, then a marigold Feather & Heart tumbler, then the big surprise, a ruffled Courthouse bowl!, then a crystal Hobstar & Feather cracker jar, and last, but not least, a ruffled amethyst Peacock Mystery bowl (which came from the Fenton Museum Collection auction). I think the buyers were very pleased and excited about the great grouping of Millersburg Glass they won (and for the barrel too!). Thank you to all who donated, Jim Wroda for selling, and the Oswalds for buying the barrel! Steve Wanna see what was all in the Barrel?? GO to the next page! Dues are Due... Did you remember to send in your dues for 2015?? We don t want you to miss out on all the Millersburg Action!
4 Congratulations and THANKS to Gregg and Susan Oswald for purchasing the ONLY KNOWN barrel of Millersburg glass left in existence!
