2 Guest Artists Liz Haas Liz Haas lives in San Diego, Ca and is a teacher, trainer and show coordinator for Rayzist Photomask for the past 15 years. She has in-depth knowledge of photoresist film and sandcarving process. For the past 10 years she has actively taught workshops on the photoresist and the sandcarving process. In 2009, Liz started working with glass artists and incorporating the photoresist process into art glass. Liz travels setting up and coordinates all trade shows in the USA teaching the sandcarving process to new businesses. Several of her photoresist and sandcarving articles has been published in engraving magazines as well as articles showing specific techniques in sandcarving. Multi-Level Relief Lettering on a Wine Bottle Create a fun and highly unique multi-color design on a wine bottle. Learn a new modern technique of a two stage etch creating a unique appearance relief lettering. In this class we will take a wine bottle and sandcarve tow images creating depth with raised lettering with a 2-step paint process. A section of the artwork will be spray-painted, and another section will be hand painted creating a distinctive design. This will create a unique effect using spray and enamel paints. We will go through creating the artwork and photoresit film required for this design. The class will cover painting techniques to create multi depth and multi paint effect. Every student will paint an image in a 2-step process of spray paint and hand painting. The results are a stunning project that will be a conversation starter. This technique of multi-level relief sandcarving can be achieved on your own projects. 1 Day (5 Hours), Tuition: $75 Saturday, July 14 10:00am-3:00pm Sandcarve Double Image on Powder Coated Metal Tumblers Create a unique double image design on a vibrant metal tumbler. Use the bright color of the metal tumblers to accent your design. In this class we will sandcarve a pattern around the tumbler removing the poweder coated surface and add a paint fill. Then we will create an overlay by adding another image. The second image will be sandcarved and paint filled. We will use spray paints to create a contrast appearance. The double image will be an overlay creating a unique design. We will go through sandcarving techniques for powder-coated surfaces and painting techniques. 3 Guest artists Joy Munshower Joy graduated from SJSU with a degree in Design with an emphasis in Ceramic Studio Practices. Recently Joy has become a supporter and volunteer at Higher Fire Clay Studio in downtown San Jose. She helps with the on-site gallery and occasionally shows work there. She is also an advocate for Beads of Courage, providing innovative arts-in-medicine programs for children coping with serious illnesses. Currently, Joy enjoys her time and freedom creating unique artwork and educating artists. Quills, Scales, Feathers and Fur This workshop is for intermediate and advanced students. Students will be sculpting bas-relief style beads with an emphasis in surface texture detail and cane application. Students will learn how to sculpt Hedgehogs, Dragons, Rooster/Hen and a Giraffe from both photo reference and instructor-drawn examples. Students will learn how to break down the shapes of these animals and how to apply those shapes to sculpting in a bas-relief or low-relief style on a base bead. Students will also learn how to make complex canes and how to apply those to mimic quills, scales and feathers. A Giraffe will be taught to teach the students how to apply a coat pattern and how to create realistic wrinkles and hair texture. Students will also learn how to use specialty tools and scalpels to facilitate and ease sculpting in a low-relief style as well as in 3-D. Some photo and diagram reference will be provided to the students to better illustrate shape, anatomy and composition breakdown. 2 Days (8 Hours each), Tuition: $475 Saturday-Sunday, August 4-5 Wesley Wong Wesley Wong s passion for glass started in 1981 with stained glass, which eventually lead him into mosaics and fused glass. His work features lots of bright colors and intricate patterns and has been exhibited in many juried glass and mosaic shows throughout the United States. 3D Mosaics with Custom Molded Fusions Expand your mosaic and fusing skills into the third dimension! You can choose to make a mosaic heart, skull, or 8 gazing ball. You will be provided with a Styrofoam form, and shown how to add a metal tube for display with a metal rod. On the first day, you reinforce the Styrofoam form with thinset and fiberglass mesh and cloth and start the design process on the mosaic. You will make several small fused glass elements for the mosaic, and a couple larger fused elements that will be molded to the shape of the form. On the second day, you will transfer the design onto the reinforced form and create the custom molds for the larger fused elements that will be slumped to fit onto the form. On the third day, you will start the mosaicking process by adding the fused glass elements and other glass materials provided. We will cover the design and mosaic construction and will focus on the tools and glass cutting techniques for working on small structural forms. Please bring small personal trinkets to incorporate into the mosaic. 4 Guest Artists Wesley Wong - (continued) Dimensional Fusing with Standup Critters Want to create a free-standing fused glass animal without using any molds? These cute creatures make great gifts and will bring a smile to any animal lover! This class will teach you techniques for adding texture and movement to the critters through the use of various fused glass materials, glass paints, and fiber paper. A discussion on how to rescale the patterns will be provided. Students will have a selection of patterns to choose from and can make one or two animals as time allows. 1 Days (8 Hours each), Tuition: $250 Thursday, August 16 Carol Shelkin Carol Shelkin creates contemporary fine art and intricate mosaic designs that feature eminent care and attention to detail using hand-cut, high quality stained glass. Carol employs a very eclectic approach to surface design, placing glass where she, as a painter naturally places paint. Realism in Stained Glass This is a hands-on workshop using modern mosaic techniques to understand realism in design, composition and color theory including; structure, cross contour, highlights, gradation, value and types of shadows using high quality Stained Glass. Learn to make decisions about your personal artwork to create realism in mosaic. Attention will be given to contemporary andamento to develop modern design. Instruction will be given to aid you in learning to evaluate your own work and help you to the next level of creativity. You will start to conquer your creative obstacles. There will be plenty of one-to-one and group instruction. No question will go unanswered, so bring questions! All materials and use of tools is included. This is an intermediate to advanced mosaic class with first time and returning mosaic realism students welcomed. 2 Days (8 Hours each), Tuition: $460 Saturday-Sunday, November 3-4 Tempered Glass Mosaic Create glittering art by mixing collage with mosaic techniques using tempered glass. Also known as safety or crash glass. Tempered glass is used to create art and architectural installations. You will see a presentation showing examples of some of the finest works in three- and two-dimensional tempered glass, participate in group discussions and individual time with the instructor. You will learn to develop a jewel-like surface for interior and exterior installations, and you will begin a mosaic piece using an overlaying technique with paint, stained glass, papers, tissue, glitter, and more. 5 Guest artists Tony Glander Photo to come Tony Glander Tony Glander has enjoyed teaching classes for the past 20+ years. He owned a glass art retail store in Gaithersburg MD for 11 years and hosted many nationally known glass teachers. For the past 16 years, he has been teaching stained glass, fused glass, etching and his favorite-screen Printing on glass at his studio in the City of Gaithersburg Arts Barn and doing commission work from his home studio. He has written many articles on glass art and contemporary glass artists and presents on-line webinars through Glass Art magazine. He is presently the president of the American Glass Guild (americanglassguild.org). Screen Printing: 101 Want to add a new technique to your glass art? In this class Tony Glander will show you how to add images you create to your fused or stained glass work. This class will show you how to make a stencil in a screen and print onto the glass. Take your work to the next level by adding incredible detail to your glass work! Learn the art of screen printing with accomplished artist and instructor Tony Glander. Words, designs or pictures can all be used in this exciting and fun process. Paints and a little Photoshop will be covered in this informative and fun two-day class. Learn how simple an clean this process is while adding personal touches to your glass creations. Tony Glander will lead you through the process of using shattered tempered glass to make one-fire bowls. Tony will cover the basics of working with plate glass and how it can help you become a more confident fuser by encouraging you to experiment. Tony will also discuss how to use gravity and heat to create art glass one-fire bowls as well. We ll talk about how to understand your kiln, so you can work with it to get the results you want! Learn the easy way to build custom sized frames. You will learn how to use the proper tools and techniques for cutting glass, foiling and soldering. Students will learn about using decals and color slides. Students will have a choice of different designs for their project. You may bring your own papers, ribbons, stickers, photos or any other materials you wish to incorporate into your unique mixed media pieces. No stained glass or glass cutting experience necessary. Students will have an opportunity to work with mica powders, decals, metal inclusions and other decorative fusing elements. Delphi Glass will supply a selection of molds for class use. 13 glass FUSING Fusing: 202 Combing and Vitrigraph Learn these two advanced fusing techniques in this one day class. Students will make a finished project with their combed piece. See how to set up the vitrigraph kiln to produce streaming hot glass into swirls of color and shapes. Manipulate the molten glass as it flows out of the bottom of the kiln to create your designs. Use the finished free formed stringers to create a totally unique piece of fused glass art. Topics include kiln safety and set up, shelf preparation, strip cutting, combing and vitrigraph techniques. All materials for both projects are included. 1 Day (5 Hours), Tuition: $95 Sunday, August 12 10:00am-3:00pm Saturday, October 20 10:00am-3:00pm Fusing: 203 Secrets to Slumping Topics will include how glass reacts to temperature, how different styles of molds require different temperatures, how glass thickness affects the slumping process and more. Students will make a fused piece that will be slumped by the instructor. Students will have access to a variety of different slumping molds for use in class. Explore the interactions and reactions caused by the various metals and glasses. Metals used in class will include copper, brass, gold leaf, silver leaf and wire, aluminum foil and others. Topics such as firing schedules, metal reactions, and designing projects will be covered. 1 Day (6 Hours), Tuition: $95 Saturday, August 11 10:00am-4:00pm Sunday, October 7 10:00am-4:00pm Fusing: 302 Reactive Glasses Discover the creative possibilities using fusing glasses that produce unique effects through chemical reactions. Learn which glasses react with other glasses and how to use this information to enhance your work. The knowledge gained is also valuable to avoid accidental reactions that can ruin a piece. Students will have an opportunity to work with a variety of reactive glasses and create sample tiles to keep for further reference. Firing schedules and related topics will also be covered. Some glass fusing and cutting experience is required.
