Sunday, April 23, 2017 Illusion Transfers for Glass & Ceramics Although they appear similar to decals, they are quite different in characteristics. ITs are actually screen printed by hand onto a special backing so they are able to be transferred to glass. There are 4 layers of enamels in each design and the result is a very black opaque negative and they are very, very strong. There are some key factors that must be remembered to ensure success when using the enamel ITs. ITs are composed of E-Z fire enamels and have a range of degrees depending on the circumstance. The white parts are actually clear and this is the area that your glass or dichroic will shine through. ITs can be applied as a final firing to your work on TOP of the glass. The max temp for on top of the glass is 1300 degrees with a maximum hold of 10 min. Remember, the higher the temp, the more the black color will start to slightly fade. If you fire to on top of the glass, you will achieve a very black, glossy and flawless look of screen printing or etching. ITs can be fired between glass at the lowest fusing temp possible below The ITs should be pre-fired onto your glass at 1100 for 10 min before full fusing them to burn the overcoat off. The overcoat needs to burn away. *Find the lowest fusing temp in your kiln. This means, you will have to start looking at your glass around 1385 (with proper safety gear on) to see exactly when your kiln fuses the glass together. Record your results. You will be surprised. The lower the temp, the blacker the enamel will look between glass. When using the design between dichroic and clear, pre-fire your design onto your clear cap at 1100 for 10 min. and THEN full fuse with your dichroic. The enamel design must be down onto the dichroic and not up. If your design is on the top, the design will not hold up at full fusing temps. It must be protected inside the glass. When using ITs with textured dichroic glass, pre-fire your dichroic to 1100 for 10 min before using it in your designs. Be sure when you apply the IT to the textured glass that you are thorough with the ponce sponge to get the enamel into the crevices of the textures. You do not need to let the ITs dry over night. There is a drying schedule programed in your firing schedule. INTRO: The basic schedule to fire the individual Illusion Transfer Designs on TOP of your pieces of glass is: Hold 12 min. Full Hold 60 min. 1

Fire Polish - Tack Fuse & IT firing - all in one- Sunday, April 23, hold Hold 30 (check your glass and make notes!!) Full Hold 90 Dichroic Stained Glass Lens Pendant Supplies Needed: Aurora Borealis Black Backed Scrap Pack 2mm Thin Black Bullseye Glass mm Tekta Illusion Transfer Patterns Needle Tip Bottle Filled w/ Hairspray Strip Cutter or comparable (optional) Graph Paper Bullseye Blue Gel Firing Procedures: 1.) Full fuse all 3 layers upside down 2.) Fire Polish/Tack Fuse Illusion Lense Notes: 3
Sunday, April 23, 2017 Apply Illusion Transfers to a 3.25 x 3.35 single sheet of 3mm Tekta and fire to the pre-fire enamel schedule. Use enough hairspray for each piece assembled. It will burn out clean. Glue as you go! Let dry completely, undisturbed, for 60 minutes. Full fuse UPSIDE DOWN. Cut square down the middle diagonally with tile or ring saw. You now have 2 pendants. Grind to shape and add a border with the grinder. Cut a 1.5 square from your pre-fired Illusion Transfer sheet. Score down the middle of the square diagonally. Use one of these lenses and use Bullseye blue gel to glue it to your piece. Tack/Contour fuse. This will fire polish at the same time. Full Fuse Upside Down Schedule: Hold Hold Hold 10 Full Hold 45 Pre-Fire Illusion Transfer Enamel to Clear: Hold 12 Full Hold 45 min. 4
Sunday, April 23, 2017 Tack or Contour Lens to Finished Piece: hold to hold 6 to 15 minutes (you have to check your glass to see if you want your lens sharp or very rounded. The higher the temp, the rounder it will be. You must record your results so you will not have to check your glass in the future. Wear proper safety gear *** SEE DIAGRAM for design construction at the end of this document. Project #4 - Dichroic Pattern Lens Pendants Supplies: Dichroic Aurora Borealis Set Clear Tekta Glass Illusion Transfer Patterns The key here is to find the lowest temp possible to full fuse your piece. The schedule I am providing is just a starting point. With proper safety gear, open your kiln and take a peak when it reaches 1365 and has been holding for 10 minutes to see if the pieces are fused. Check every 7 or 8 minutes after that until they are fused. Every time you open the kiln, the temp will drop. Be sure to let the temp get back up. Record your results and you will only have to do this the first time. Remember, the enamel lens must be enamel side DOWN onto the dichroic glass. You must all pre-fire your design to your tekta first. Pre-Fire Illusion Transfer Enamel to Clear: Hold 12 Full Hold 45 min. 5
Low Full Fuse (Project 4 Cont.) Sunday, April 23, Hold hold to 1385 hold min. (check your glass!) Project #5 - Textured Dichroic w/ Design & Clear Cap Supplies: Wissmach black or clear textured dichroic Illusion Transfers Bullseye Thin Clear Ponce Sponge NOTE: This one is a little different. You apply the IT designs to the textured glass, not the clear. Pre-Fire Illusion Transfer to Glass Hold 12 Full Hold 45 min. Low Full Fuse Hold hold to 1385 hold min. (check your glass!) 6
