1 SKILLS CANADA BC COMPETITION 2016 FASHION TECHNOLOGY SECONDARY LEVEL SCOPE DOCUMENT WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13 TH, 2016 TRADEX, ABBOTSFORD CHAIR: Nina Ho DURATION: 8 hours (1/2 hour for lunch) CHECK IN/ORIENTATION TIME: 7:30 am START TIME: 8:00 am FINISHING TIME: 4:30 pm 1. PROJECT INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose of the Challenge. Competitors will manipulate the basic pattern to include required design elements (see below) and construct a mid-season jacket. The jacket should be suitable for a young working professional. 1.2 Duration of contest. When planning the design details, Competitors should consider the time frame of the competition. Entire jacket must be completed in 8 hours. 2. CONTEST DESCRIPTION 2.1 Before the competition. Competitors must prepare and bring a color fashion illustration of their proposed jacket design (minimum 22cmx28cm, maximum 28cm x 43cm) suitable for display. Points will be deducted if drawing is not available at orientation. The prepared technical drawing should include both front and back using the approved croquis available on the Skills Canada BC website. Note: The technical drawing must be completed in black pen only and include a notched collar and set in sleeves. 2.2 During the competition. Competitors will be provided with a jacket pattern. Competitors must NOT alter the following mandatory components: Sleeve cap Collar Lapel Neckline Shoulder length Armhole shape The jacket length must finish between the waistline and hip line. Projects that do not include all the mandatory requirements will be marked as incomplete. 2.3 Design components. Minimum of two of the following: yoke, design lines other than princess seams, slit(s), vent(s), tabs, epaulettes, added fullness (eg. pleats, gathers, tucks)
2 Design must include two symmetrical pockets Snaps provided must be used for the jacket closure. (min. THREE snaps must be at CF) Design must incorporate dart transfer or conversion Appropriate hem treatment 2.4 Mid-season jacket pattern description: Basic Jacket pattern includes 1.2cm seam allowances Jacket front Jacket back Upper collar Under collar Front facing Back neck facing Sleeve (upper and lower) 3. EQUIPMENT, MATERIAL 3.1 Supplies provided by Skills Canada: Competitors are limited to the items on the supply list. Template outline (croquis) for technical drawing submission form is available online. Jacket supplies: 3M cm wide denim fabric jacket snaps Interfacing as needed Thread (matching) Shoulder pads Pattern drafting paper Fabric swatches, as well as the basic pattern are available through the Provincial Skills Offices by March, Equipment provided by Skills Canada: Domestic ironing board (one for each competitor) Shared Dress form 3.3 Equipment provided by competitors sewing machine of choice (may ONLY use the STRAIGHT stitch function. ALL computer functions must be disabled) ONLY straight and zipper feet are allowed. No extra attachments and/or feet are allowed such as a top stitching or buttonhole foot. Serger (matching threads will be provided by Skills-must be returned at the end of the competition) Iron Please make sure you have needles, bobbins etc. for your sewing machine and serger. There will be no additional machines and accessories available for use. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO THREAD AND ADJUST THE TENSIONS ON YOUR OWN MACHINES! 4. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Competitors must bring their winning project from their regional competition. The regional project must be finished and pressed. Competitor will be penalized if they do not have the project at the orientation. We will provide a display location for the project(s) during the provincial competition.

4 BC SKILLS CANADA 2016 Wednesday, April 13th, 2016 (7:30am to 4:30pm) PROVINCIAL PROJECT FASHION TECHNOLOGY - SECONDARY LEVEL 1. CONTEST INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose of the Challenge. Assess the competitor s ability in critical thinking, creative design, pattern making, and sewing construction in the field of women s apparel design. 1.2 Duration of contest. 8 hours 1.3 Skills and Knowledge to be tested. The contest will focus on practical work. Theoretical knowledge is limited to what is necessary to carry out the practical work. Competitors will complete a mid-season jacket. 2. CONTEST DESCRIPTION 2.1 Before the competition. 5 2.4 Mid-season jacket pattern description: Basic Jacket pattern includes 1.2cm seam allowances (upper and lower) Projects that do not include all the mandatory requirements will be marked as incomplete. 3. TASKS TO BE PERFORMED DURING THE CONTEST: During the orientation, competitors must submit their finished regional skills project, fashion illustration and original technical drawing, completed in black pen. Points will be lost if the competitors do not bring the winning project (,) or if project is not complete Competitors will begin the competition by creating their pattern from the provided basic jacket pattern provided Industry sewing standards for garment construction to be maintained as equipment allows As part of the evaluation, the following aspects will be considered: o The degree of difficulty and skill level of the pattern development as it affects the construction of the jacket o The quality of the technical drawing o The quality of the jacket construction o The fit and wear ability of the jacket o The overall jacket appearance and conformity of the design to the technical drawing In the event that no competitor has finished the jacket, the time allowed will be extended by a maximum of 30 minutes or until the first garment is finished and hanging on the rack Please check the Contest Description and project documents regularly for updates or revisions 4. EQUIPMENT, MATERIAL, CLOTHING 4.1 Equipment and material provided by Skills Canada BC Fabric (denim and interfacing) Pattern paper Notions Snap press to be shared amongst competitors (demonstration during orientation) Basic jacket pattern Shared Dress form Domestic ironing board 4.2 Equipment and material provided by the competitor Pattern drafting tools
6 Sewing construction tools Cutting tools rotary cutters and mats are permitted Pressing tools i.e. ham, sleeve board, press cloth, seam roll, etc sewing machine of choice (may ONLY use the STRAIGHT stitch function. ALL computer functions must be disabled) ONLY straight and zipper feet are allowed. No extra attachments and/or feet are allowed such as a top stitching or buttonhole foot. Serger (matching threads will be provided by Skills Canada BC) The following items are NOT permitted: books, written notes, diagrams, directions, listening devices, paper, scrap fabric, embellishing materials, sewing machine attachments, electronic devices. 4.1 Required clothing provided by competitor Flat soft sole shoes with closed toes sneakers are acceptable Long hair must be tied back Dangling jewelry not permitted Long flowing sleeves are not permitted

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Judges will note safe work procedures relevant to garment production ie keeping work space clear of obstacles, powering off machines when not in use, adherence to clothing requirements, etc. 6. ASSESSMENT POINT BREAKDOWN /100 Display 1 Safety 2 Technical Drawing 2 Final fit and appearance 5 Creativity and Suitability of Design 9 Sewing Construction 53 Design Details ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Tie (No ties are allowed) In the event of a tie, the competitor with the highest degree of difficulty in sewing construction will be declared the winner.
8 SKILLS CANADA BC 2016 Wednesday, April 13 th, 2015 (8:00am to 4:30pm) FASHION TECHOLOGY SECONDARY LEVEL INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPETITORS: Each competitor must stay in his/her assigned area except when using the sergers. No unnecessary wondering around. Keep your working area clean and neat for a safe working environment. Place all garbage in the garbage cans provided as you work. Basic block,, drafting paper, fabric ( cm wide), matching thread and bobbins are at each station (seam allowance is 1.2cm) All other notions and extra supplies are at the common table: interfacing, shoulder pads and etc. Only notions/supplies supplied by the competition may be used SCHEDULE FOR COMPETITION: 7:30 am set-up and familiarize with equipment at assigned stations O O O 8:00 am start competition. O EXPLAINATION OF THE REQUIREMENTS, PROCEDURE AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE DAY Hand in your regional garments for display purposes. Set up your station; do not touch the competition package. Collect fashion illustration and technical sketches from each competitor with assigned number. No other identification on illustration. 12:00 am submit all pattern pieces in the Ziploc bag provided 12:00 pm lunch all competitors must stop for 1/2 hour lunch break competitors please leave the competition area completely. 12:30 pm resume competition 04:30 pm end of competition, all competitors hand in garments on hangers provided If you finish early, please hand in your garment to facilitate the judging process Cleanup your work station Return bobbins, large spool of thread and any sewing machine attachments that you may have used You may keep the extra fabric. RETURN my bags please, so that I could use them next year. 06:00 pm Closing Ceremonies YOU MAY ASK TO GO TO THE WASHROOM WHEN NECESSARY DURING THE COMPETITION The gold medallist will be able to compete in the National Skills Canada Competition from June 5-8, 2016, in Moncton, New Brunswick. Please advise BC Skills Canada if you will be able to attend. **You MUST be a Canadian citizen in order to qualify for the National competition.
