Can I use my senses to make sense of my surroundings? Listen to the story of Anthony Browne Into the Forest. Look at the pictures in detail. What can you see? What do you notice? What characters are hidden in this book? Why? Make a list-what do they all have in common. In the style of the labels in the book, write labels and captions Forests/Woods are.... Paint and collage characters and a forest background for a shared display. Visit out school wood and use our senses to explore. and Design 2 Can I work with a partner? Can I work in a large group? Can I name and identify plants and trees? Can I use natural materials to create pictures? Can I count objects? Can I use to record what I have seen? (Alternate with Week 3) Forest School Identify and name plants and trees in our school wood/grounds. Collect leaves. Sort/count/measure. Use natural resources to make transient art. Collect natural objects in bags. Make a class collection and collage on sticky plastic. Use twigs to make a natural frame. Sample an area with the frame. How many daisies/plants can you count? Collect data. Take close up photos of plants/leaves. Examine under the microscope. Map work-identify areas in our grounds.

Use twigs to make SAQ ladders etc. Draw a map for Hansel and Gretal to find their way back home. PE 4 Can I locate, identify and name animals? Can I sort and classify them? Can I use a key on a map? Can I make careful drawings? Can I record my observations? Little Red Riding Hood (Who do you think the red coat belonged to in Anthony Browne s book)? NB Story Book Do you think we ve got a wolf living in our woods? Why? What animals to you think/know we have in our woods? Animal discovery trail. Collect, identify and name. Sort. Compare and classify woodland animals. Locate where they were found on a map. Include a Key. Observational drawings of animals. Take photos/videos of animals. Use recording devices to describe them.

Can I design and make a healthy sandwich? Picnic Time! (over 2 weeks) What plants should we try and avoid sitting next to on our picnic? Do we have any un welcoming plants in our wood? Identify and name. Design and make a healthy sandwich to take on our picnic. Invite parents/carers to our picnic at the end of the week. Design and Technology

Autumn (Ferdie s Autumn Adventure) Trip to local wood (Hamsterley, Chopwell, Thornley) What season are we in? Have you noticed any changes? What else do you know about Autumn? Homework-go on an Autumn walk and bring evidence that Autumn is here back to school. Look for evidence of Autumn in our school grounds. What has changed since September? What special things do animals do in the Autumn and why? Study nocturnal animals. Take photos and video evidence. 8 Can I describe why an animal is suited to its habitat? Can I describe simple food chains? Can I keep my environment litter free? Can I make careful drawings? Can I sort and classify minibeasts? Can I use a drawing programme? Bog Baby Where exactly did Bog Baby live within the wood? (microhabitat) Why? What other animals live within a wood in a specific place? Think about what animals eat within a wood. First hand observations. Caring for our environment-keep it safe for our animals. Litter pick. Create homes for the minibeasts. Right and wrong-telling the truth. Observational drawings. Classify and sort minibeasts (invertebrates) Colour Magic-animals drawings/woodland pictures

Devise a suitable Key. 10 Can I talk about how changes in the weather affect animals and plants. Can I read and follow instructions? Can I measure accurately? Christmas Ferdie s Christmas What is our weather like? How has it changed since we came back to school in September? How might the animals in our school grounds/wood be affected by the changes? What can we do to help them? Follow and write instructions to make bird cake. Measure quantities.
