Christingle drama resource Let children pupils show off their acting skills with our Christingle plays. Why not put on a Christingle talent evening with plays and songs to raise funds for The Children's Society? Contents: Giving and getting - page 2 A short dialogue between a mother and daughter, illustrating what the Christingle represents, and the work The Children s Society does with, and for, families. 2 characters. Bring light to the darkness - page 4 A play about how some families struggle in the darkness of winter but Christ is their light. 2 narrators, 8 actors and 1 family What kind of light are you? - page 9 A play for nine children incorporating various props based on the theme of light.

Giving and Getting This is a short dialogue between a mother and daughter, illustrating what The Christingle represents, and the work the Children s Society does with, and for, families. Mum, do we have to go to this thing, Chris...Tingle? I want to stay in and play on my Xbox! Yes, we are going. It s good you ll enjoy it. And we ll be back in time for Dad to collect you and take you to his house for the next few days. Yeh, I d forgotten that. I wish he lived here, but at least I see him sometimes, and he buys me loads of things! Yes...he does, he sometimes buys you a little too much! Now go on, find a bit of money for the offering and get ready. It s not warm out put a coat on. But church...boring! And what am I going to get for my money? You ll get an orange with a candle in it, and some other things to remind us of God and how good he is. And that s it? I get some stupid orange... No, that s not it. It s a bit more complicated! The orange is shaped like the world, and there s a red band around it that reminds us of Jesus. There are four sticks with nice things on that are like God s gifts to us every season, and the candle is the light of Jesus. Christingle means Christ Light. But it s still a decorated orange! Why would I want to give money for that?! The money collected goes to help children who don t have the things you have. You ve got a home, a mum and a dad, food to eat, good health......but I had flu last year... Yes you did! But imagine if you were were disabled, and needed help to do all the things you want to do? The money you and others give will help children who live with a disability, and help their parents. When that other things go wrong for families, and they need help the Children s Society is there.

But what other things can go wrong? Come on Chloe, think about it! Some of your friends are in families where a parent is ill, or like us where the dad or mum lives somewhere else, or where there are arguments and fights all the time, someone loses their job and the worry gets too much. Things can get so hard the children and teenagers sometimes run away from home. So the money for the orange goes to help people who are having problems, and we get the orange as a reminder of Jesus? Yes, that s about it! Now come on too much chatting, we d better hurry or we ll be late! Don t forget some money to give!

Bring light to the darkness Parts: Two narrators Eight actors to represent: the world, the light of the world, spring, summer, autumn, winter, fruits of the earth and Jesus blood (if possible dressed in appropriate colours e.g., blue for the world, yellow for summer) Additional parts: A family (of any size, with outfits as appropriate), or images of families projected while the drama takes place. Props: Globe or blue sphere to represent the world (large inflatable if possible) Flowers to represent spring Bucket and spade for summer Dried flowers / corn dolly for autumn Large snowflakes for winter A basket filled with foodstuffs Long length of red material or wide ribbon Large candle (firmly placed into a candle stick or church acolyte stand) Wax taper Four made up Christingles unlit The two narrators stand on either side, preferably raised up with microphones. As each character is mentioned the actors step forward onto the stage area. God s world steps out onto centre stage, holding a sphere to represent the earth. This is God s world. He pulled it out of the heavens and gave it life. He made forests and seas, deserts and snowy mountains. He made animals and birds,

fish and insects of all kinds. God looked at it and was pleased. All was good in the world, and it was ready for people children, adults, and families. Springtime steps forward carrying flowers and stands slightly behind and to one side of the world. Then there is springtime. God breathes life into the earth and the animals and people are created making tiny new lives within them flowers bloom, trees blossom. God brings life to people, and makes families for all to grow in and enjoy. Joy is within us. Summer steps forward carrying summer beach toys and stands diagonally opposite springtime slightly forward of the world. Then there s summer. All is warmth and sunlight, holidays and laughter. Many families enjoy the fun of the light of God in their lives, and the sun shines on them, bringing light and removing darkness. Autumn steps forward and stands slightly behind the world adjacent to springtime carrying dried flowers / corn. Then there is autumn. The earth has given us food and hope, and the harvest is over. Satisfaction is with us. But autumn also brings the beginning of darkness. Some families have really difficult things happen to them, and darkness moves in things go wrong, and they live in crisis.

Winter steps forward slightly in front of the world and diagonally opposite to autumn carrying large snowflakes. Then there is winter. It is white and cold. The world has a time to rest. There is quiet until the next awakening in springtime. There is peace for many. But winter can also be tough, and some families go through what feels like winter, with the light gone and darkness all around. They suffer really hard times, and need help. Both: And God looks on and is pleased. But God s heart is pained when he sees children and families in need. One child carries a basket of food enter and sits near the world. God provided the world, the seasons, and all the good things we have that we enjoy. We have food, and we also have more than enough love, compassion and caring. But we don t always wish to share. God sees families that are in crisis. He sees people who are struggling to cope. And God sees others who have enough food, or money, or time, or love to offer them help, but who don t seem to care. God may look on and think: What has happened to my creation, all the people who I made, all the good things I gave to them? Why don t they seem to care for others? Have they forgotten that I know

the pain of separation, I know what suffering is like, and I sent my son to give them an example of love? Two children walk up the centre trailing a massive length of red material or ribbon. If there is no centre aisle it can be passed over the heads until it reaches the front and then should be placed in a circle around the world. Whilst this is happening the narration continues This is the Blood of my Son who I sent in love, to stop you being selfish, to bring light to your darkness. He came... To show you generosity and love for one another. To show you compassion and a will to help those in need. Both: To show you open arms... like a parent welcoming a child. To show you how you should be... as you help every child, parent, and family. And as you follow my example, offer my love, and take my light into the darkness.

Enter the light of the world carrying a large candle (unlit) slowly. As the light arrives the seasons and the world stand back up and face the front again. The Light has its candle lit by an adult from the Pascal candle if there is one. Christ is the light of the world. I sent Him to show you how to live, and how to love. He taught you how to love, to give, to share everything. The four seasons put down their props and are each given a Christingle that is unlit and does not contain the sweets by a stage helper. They add the sweets, and the Christingles are lit by an adult taking the light from the Light of the World. The lights in the venue should be dimmed or turned off. Now you must be a light to show others how to live. Both: Go and shine in my world, bringing light to those children and families whose lives are dark. Go and help them, support them, and bring light to the darkness. The actors remain completely still for a few seconds and then safely blow out their candles before slowly walking out following the light of the world. Adapted from an original play by Linda Rose, Swadlincote

What kind of light are you? Parts: Narrator Eight children or participants Props: Big torch Miner s light or hard hat with light tied on A light bulb A candle Picture of a traffic light Picture of a car headlight Picture of a street light Illustration of the sun A dirty and battered light Children could make some of these props the week before as part of an art lesson, Sunday school or youth club activity. The Play Narrator: There are all kings of lights in our lives, each with its own role to play. The sun (points to it) warms us, lights us and without it we would die. What other lights are there? (CHILDREN COME FORWARD IN TURN CARRYING THEIR OBJECT OR PICTURE AND SAY) Child 1: Child 2: Child 3: Child 4: Child 5: Child 6: Torch a beam to light the right path in the dark. Traffic light it gives instructions on the safe and right way to go. Car headlight a light to take with us to show us the way. Street light shines throughout the dark to light up the dangerous paths. Miner s light a light to guide you where there is no other light. Electric light a modern light seen everywhere.

Child 7: Narrator: Candlelight an ancient light, it can give us light when all else fails. The lighted candles on the altar (table) remind us that Jesus is the light of the world and He is just like each of these lights to us. (CHILDREN HOLD UP THEIR ITEMS IN TURN AND SAY) Child 1: Child 2: Child 3: Child 4: Child 5: Child 6: Child 7: Narrator: Jesus is a torch beam to light the right path in the dark. Jesus tells when it is safe to go, just like the traffic light. Jesus goes with us to show us the way. Jesus shines through the dark to light our way. Jesus can be a guiding light when there is no other light. Jesus is a light for today, seen all around us if we look. Jesus is an ancient light. He will be there when everything else fails. We can be like each of these lights if we follow Jesus example. (CHILD EIGHT INTERUPTS HOLDING A DIRTY AND BATTERED LAMP) Child 8: Should it be like this? (ALL THE CHILDREN HOLD UP THEIR LIGHTS AND SAY) All: No! You should be clean, polished and in good working order! This play is provided by The Children's Society for use in services and activities that are held in support of its work.
