3 WYMONDLEY WOOD RED TRAIL by. 1. LEAF RUBBINGS Carefully pick one leaf each. With the underside of the leaf facing upwards, lay a sheet of paper on top and use the side of a thick crayon to make a rubbing. See how many leaves can be fitted onto one sheet how many different kinds of leaves have the class picked? 2. MATERIALS This gate is made of and. It has diagonal (/) bars. The shape in the middle of the gate is a. 3. BARK RUBBINGS The outside of a tree trunk is covered in bark. To make a bark rubbing, work with a partner and find a tree. Take it in turns one partner holds a sheet of paper very still on the trunk, while the other partner uses the side of a crayon to make a rubbing. Look at the patterns made by the bark, are they all the same? 6
4 4. ANIMAL DETECTIVES Use your eyes and ears to help you to be an animal detective. Look around you, on the ground and up in the trees for clues or evidence that animals have left behind. When you find a clue, draw it on the detective s report sheet and write down which animal has left the clue behind. Some clues, like feathers, can be put into a bag and taken back to school for display or drawing. 5. TEXTURE HUNT Use your fingertips to find out what things feel like. First, make a collection or set of all the things which feel hard they have to be able to fit in the bag! Then make collections of soft, rough, smooth and bendy things, each set going into its own bag. 6. LISTENING Make a circle to include everyone then stand very still and quiet and listen. After about thirty seconds, tell others what you can hear. Which sound was the loudest? 7. COLOUR CATCHERS Each child needs a colour catcher card with a name written on the back. Lots of tiny pieces of leaves, flowers, buds, seeds, moss, bark etc. showing as many different colours as possible, can be picked and stuck onto the sticky strip. Remember to only peel back a small amount of paper at a time and don t drop any litter in the wood. 7
5 EQUIPMENT LIST: TEACHERS NOTES FOR RED TRAIL (KS1) Clipboards (one per child + 2) Minimum of two sheets of paper per child Thick crayons Pencils Minimum of six collecting bags with blank labels Colour catcher cards (one per child) Animal evidence record sheet(s) Trail map ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Animal evidence information sheet, to give ideas to the adults of what clues to look for Animal evidence record sheet master, for preparing photocopies NOTES ON THE TRAIL: 1. Try to ensure that leaves are held still with one hand, while the crayon is used in the other. Always rub the underside of the leaf. 2. Answers: wood; metal; four; diamond Look for other shapes or counting opportunities. 3. Use trees, in a defined area, which can be accessed easily. 4. According to the children s abilities, recording can be done individually, in groups or as a whole class. This is a good opportunity for reporting back, to encourage speaking and listening and for children to analyse why they find more clues than animals (nocturnal, camouflage, living underground etc) 8
6 5. Back at school, the collections of texture objects can be displayed in sets, used for collages or to make natural feely bags for describing and guessing. 6. Encourage the children not to call out when they hear something, but to save it until the signal is given to end the listening session. 7. Colour catcher cards can easily be made by attaching double-sided sellotape to sheets of A4 card and then cutting up on the trimmer. A4 card 7 strips of double-sided sellotape Cuts up into fourteen cards Encourage children to look for a good variety of colours, shapes and textures, keeping all samples tiny or smaller than your finger nail. To keep the activity manageable, define the area where collecting may be done and ensure that only a small section of the card is worked on, before peeling back more paper. ENSURE THAT CHILDREN WASH THEIR HANDS AFTER THESE ACTIVITIES! 9
