1 Volume XXXV Issue 4 April 2018 Since 1980 OROVILLE PIECEMAKERS QUILT GUILD, INC. Newsletter Editor: Jan Abramson (530) abramsonjan@gmail.com Web Site : orovillepiecemakers.org Angie Horne webmaster aphorne3@yahoo.com President s Message: I was so glad to see everyone at our meeting today. I hope you had a chance to welcome our new guest, Kathy Conrad, and our returning member Dale Tabor. Our speaker, Robyn Green of Hoffman Batiks, gave a wonderful presentation on How Batiks are Made. Little did I realize how much involvement there was with the process of making Batik fabrics? I came away appreciating all of my batik fabric. I hope you enjoyed her presentation, as much as I did. The gifts of batik fat quarters were an added surprise to those members who won. I know that all of you are busy working on projects for our quilt show, boutique items, quilt challenges, and community service. I want to say thank you to all those members who have contributed. For those who have not had a chance to contribute, it is not too late. We need your help and support. Remember our Quilt Show is a major fundraiser, so we can have activities and presenters over the next two years. Your contribution will ensure we will have a successful show. So come and join the fun at our sew days and retreats where you can work on projects for our show. We would love to have you. I end with and Irish Blessing: May your day be touched by a bit of Irish luck, brightened by a song in your heart, and warmed by the smiles of the people you love. Happy Saint Patrick s Day Jeanette Akin, Moonlighters Chair: March has decided to be stormy, windy and cold. It is a good time to stay indoors and sew on projects. Went to Yuba City Quilt Show, the red and white quilts were varied and awesome to see. Some vendors were there and different quilts, related items for sale, besides material. Thanks to all who brought food this month, it was delicious. Good to see everyone at our meeting. In April we have Claudia s class after our meeting. Nancy Kennedy has a quilt class on Jimmy Buffet Shirt Quilt. The workshop is a morning project from 9:00am 12:00pm. More P.U.P. challenges were shown and voted on for member(s) to finish. The show and tell projects were varied and well done. See you next month. Virginia Brile April Birthdays: 4/2 Virginia Brile 4/2 Marilla Brereton 4/4 Dorothy Welton 4/4 Sabrina Bell

2 April Speaker: We had a wonderful speaker with Robyn Green who gave us some interesting information on how batiks are made, it is certainly involved and all manual labor. Our speaker on April 19 will be Cathy Evans from Quilts by Cathy, Cathy did the quilting on this year s Opportunity Quilt as well as our 2015 Opportunity Quilt. She will be speaking on some of the things we should be watching for before we turn our quilts over to a Long Armer to be quilted. And, our May speaker will be Sandra Bruce on "Material Matrix and the paths taken". June Retreat: Please plan on attending our June Angel retreat being held June 7-9th, see Linda Pearson for details. Once again, we will be having Deby Hendrickson to clean our machines, at this time she will be there on Friday the 8th, she will also sharpen scissors. If you are interested in signing up, please see me. Sharon Helton, March Workshop: Teri Russell's ornament class was a challenge and fun. I'm looking forward to seeing lots of finished ornaments. I hope you all saw Nancy Kennedy's Jimmy Buffet shirt quilt. She will be teaching the class on April 5th. It's not too late to sign up. If you signed up and didn't get a supply list let me or Nancy know, and we'll get one to you. It's a fun quilt that just makes you smile. Class will start a 9:30. Bring a potluck dish to share. In May Dorie Javier from Folsom is teaching a fun and easy quilt that looks complicated but isn't. Dorie is always lots of fun. Linda Pearson, Block of Month, March: Day Meeting. Tam s Patch Terry Catt, Joan Robertson, Moonlighters Meeting Arkansas Crossroads Lynne Pillus, Sandi Corkran, Community Service: There were 16 quilts and 2 hats donated this month. On March 7 quilts were delivered to Oroville hospital Labor & Delivery, Foster Kids, Caring for Women and Child Protective services. All were quite happy to receive them. Next month the mystery will consist of new items with a value of at least $30. It is not necessary to return any of the bags or baskets. If you are a lucky winner, they are yours to keep. Donations of new or nearly new items are always appreciated. Cheryl Campbell, Betty Drake,

It's a lot of fun for a $1.00 ticket hoping you will win half of the pot of gold" collected. However, Jackie Conn and Terri are lamenting they haven't won in a long time. Better luck next month girls! Terri Russell, Membership: There were 38 members in attendance and one visitor. ROSTER UPDATES: Cheryl Campbell s was hacked! Oroville, Ca Ann Harvey, Mercantile: Thank you, ladies, for supporting our Mercantile Table. We have lots of fabric (mostly in fat quarters or nearly fat quarters) that is ideal if you are working on a scrappy quilt and don t need large pieces of yardage. When you bring in items for donation or consignment that you have decided to get out of your storage, please take the time to clean the items before you give them to us. They certainly aren t attractive to anyone if they are dirty, and I don t think it should be our job to bring them home to wash before placing them on the sale table. If you can t be bothered to at least do that much, I suggest you just chuck them in your trash bin and be done with it. Dorothy Welton, Cheryl Cox, Helen Cox, Quilt Show: Dates to Remember: Judging October 25, set-up October 26, show October We currently have 16 sponsors lined up and have sent out letters to them thanking

Linda showed us that we could find many items at the Dollar Store that can be helpful for quilting. Wrinkle releaser: to remove those stubborn wrinkles in fabric. Too bad we can t use it on face wrinkles as well! Heavy duty starch: Fabric starch is a magical spray-on formula that stiffens fabric, making it easier for you to work with while quilting especially when you re sewing intricate, complex patterns. Dry erase board: Linda uses it to keep track of thread color and other details about a project. You could also use it to write down instructions in big letters.let s face it most of us need glasses to read and might be tired of squinting while looking at the pattern directions. Once you are done with the project just wipe the board clean. Plastic baskets: Linda uses them to hold her patters, but they could also be useful organizing your fat quarter stash. April Workshop: Claudia Goebl reminded us that at our April meeting she will be teaching a workshop for the Scrappy Mountain Majesties Class a Bonnie Hunter Free Pattern. Let Claudia know if you d like to sign up. PUP Challenge: More members brought PUP (Poor unfinished Projects) challenges for the membership to vote on. Becky Cross will complete her Bargello quilt.
