2 Page 2 MARCH 26, 2011 WORKSHOP 9:00 to 3:00 First Presbyterian Church Scrappy Trip Around the World We are doing a free sewing day for guild members to celebrate National Quilting Month. Sherry Book will present the workshop Scrappy Trip Around the World from Bonnie Hunter s quiltville.com website. If you are interested in doing another project of your own, you are more than welcome to do that instead. Scrappy seems to be in these days, so Sherry picked a quilt to use up some of her scraps, and hopefully you will want to as well. This quilt is sewn with scrappy short strips that are 2.5 x16 long. Each block (on left) finishes to 12 and you will need 4 blocks to make a diamond. If you make a quilt that is 4 blocks wide by 6 blocks long (total of 24 blocks), it will be 48 x72, without borders. Each block requires 6 strips, so 6 x 24 blocks =144 strips. You will have an opportunity to exchange strips for the workshop starting in January to boost the variety of your strips. If you participate in all 3 months, you will have half the strips needed for a 48 x72 quilt. The rest will come out of your stash. See the notice in the newsletter for the strip exchange details. Hopefully you will be able to come and sew for the day or part of the day. We ll do a potluck at noon, and perhaps a drawing or two. The day is free, right here at the church where we have guild meetings so come, bring your sewing machine and have some fun. A sign-up sheet will be started in January. Contact Sherry if you have any questions: or at slbook3@aol.com. The free pattern is online here: scrappytrips.shtml. If you don t have internet access, you can sign up for a pattern in January. POTHOLDER PASS We are having a short pass-along project for 2011 that is kind of like a secret sister exchange, but without knowing who your recipient will be. If you would like to participate, here s the deal: Make two potholders, both the same or different. Put one in a brown lunch sack and bring both to the meeting. The one in the sack will be exchanged with another participant, to be shown at an informal show & tell to the guild. The other will be displayed on a clothesline for the meeting, and then will be put in the quilt show boutique for sale. SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS: Potholders must be minimum of 6, preferably 7-8 or larger. Use some sort of insulation: insul-brite, several layers of cotton batting, old towels, etc. Put your name on the potholder you re exchanging --- safety pin with label, or write on it with permanent marker. BE CREATIVE! HAVE FUN! Use up some old quilt blocks, or try some fun, funky pattern any shape, color or style you can come up with that you think others would enjoy. You CAN make extras for the boutique if you really get carried away! Weather Updates It s time again to consider inclement weather. The cutoff time for a decision is 3:00 P.M. day of the meeting and the information can be found on our web site
3 Page 3 By Michelle Coenen The meeting was started with the introduction of guests. Elaine Diavastes has rejoined the guild. The monthly mini was made by Ann Brouillette and Boni Lochner and won by Robyn Wright. The December monthly mini will be made by Robyn Wright. June DeVries announced that Lois Pirozek has resigned from the Quilt Show as Chairperson. Nominations were held for a replacement and Michele Hayden was voted in by majority vote as the Quilt Show Chair for the 2011 show. A video compiled by Melissa Grubb was presented to show the Sunshine Quilt giveaway at the Mary Treglia Community Center. The smiles on the children s faces were precious and the children are treasuring the quilts given and those involved in the giveaway are treasuring the time well spent. June reminded members that Friday Girls Night Out in Sergeant Bluff starts at 4PM and ends at 10 PM on November 12, 2010 at Community United Methodist Church. Alyce King reminded us that the Christmas tree ornaments for the Festival of Trees need to be left at either Heart and Hand or the Sioux City library by November 18. The tree goes on display on November 22 through December 2 nd. Alyce also informed us that LaTomah Hauff s daughter was hospitalized in ICU. Due to this unfortunate circumstance, volunteers were requested to help finish the tree skirt for this project. The President s Challenge was to use a specialty ruler. Linda Scadden used a Bias Binding Ruler, Vivian McPherson used a Twister ruler, Dawn McKee used a Triangle ruler, and Pam Clark used an angle ruler. In the drawing, Vivian McPherson won a pattern. We are taking a break in December from the President s Challenge. June announced there were coupons available that when you dine at Chili s 10% of the price of your meal would be donated to Hospice of Siouxland. Dues for the 2011 membership come due in December forms are available now. Also members picked up their package of 10 raffle tickets for the show quilt. As quilters are notorious for being good cooks, we are also taking recipes from members at the December and January meetings to build our cookbook for sale throughout next year and at the show as well. Our program was provided by Joanne Albernda from Sioux Center, Iowa on what inspires her to make works of art with fabric and her trunk show provided glimpses into various textile arts such as hand dyeing, using common household items and specialized chemicals to create secondary designs in fabric. The meeting ended with show and tell. The next meeting will be held on December 13, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m. The greeters will be Lori Baldwin, Pat Calhoun, and Sandy Kluender. Robyn Wright will provide the monthly mini. Our December program is the potluck (A-G please bring dessert, H-N please bring salads, O-Z please bring a main dish to share). As you have your recipe box or cookbooks out to prepare your contribution to our meal, please remember to make a copy for the Guild Cookbook. Please place recipes on either the forms provided or on a single side of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Recipes are also being accepted by to Melissa Grubb at tmgrubb@frontiernet.net. The nursing home quilts are scheduled to be distributed after this meeting. We would like to get a group picture with the quilts. We will need volunteers to hold quilts for this group picture. As we have in past years, we are donating mittens, hats, socks and scarves to those in need. Please remember to bring them with you to this meeting. We are still accepting 9 patch blocks in any of the previous color schemes we have done to help the Sunshine Quilt stash.
