We have two new staff members I d like to welcome to the shop. Many of you know Chris Spiker-she has many years of software, embroidery, and sewing experience. She will be teaching software and some embroidery classes. She will inspire us all with her creative ideas. Barb Jarchow has recently returned to Fargo after living in North Carolina. Barb has been quilting for the past 17 years, while pursuing her nursing career. You will see Barb in the shop several days a week and also teaching beginning quilting. We have a variety of Block of the Month programs to chose from or do them all. Check them out on pages 8 & 9. We have them starting in different months as some fabrics or patterns have not been available when expected. We have had requests to continue with PhD, so it will return with a new twist. All are welcome to register for PhD or just come for a fun time of sewing and friendship. Snippets from Sandy J A N U A R Y Be sure to check out some of our new classes. Visit your local quilt shop day is January 25 and we re planning Make n takes, drawings, sales.. Sure to be another fun day. Don t forget are Super Bowl Sale on February 1st. Jewell Hewitt joins us on February 3. You ll love to see all the features of the new V Series Machines. Learn to turn your photo s into stiches using PE Design software. 2 Quilt It Beginning Quilting At the end of the 4 sessions, you will have learned the basic skills of quilt making: fabric selection, rotary cutting, accurate piecing, adding borders, and binding. Come to the first class prepared to purchase your fabric and tools. 20% discount will be given for purchases made in first class. No experience necessary. BYOM $75 + supplies and book. 4 Sessions: Wednesday, Jan. 22, 29, Feb. 5, & 12: 5:30-8:30 pm Beginning Sewing Tote Bag Learn sewing technique such as cutting accurately, sewing seams, matching seams, adding lining, topstitching, and turning a tube. At the end of the class you ll have a finished tote bag. $70 includes all supplies, pattern, and use of a sewing machine. Wednesday, Jan. 22: 11 am-3 pm, Monday, Jan. 27: 5-9 pm, Friday, Jan.31: 11-3 pm Triple Stitch Laundry Bag Take a pattern that requires simple hand embroidery and use the triple stitch on your sewing machine to get the look of hand embroidery in half the time. We will be using the triple stitch and a font on your sewing machine to make a Travel Laundry/tote bag. We may not finish the entire bag in class. $20 plus supplies. Bring a snack for yourself if you like. BYOM Miscellaneous Bread Steam & Serve New to sewing? This is a great beginner project. Make a bread steam and serve basket. Great for serving warm rolls or bread at the dinner table while showing off your sewing skills. $10.00 plus supplies. BYOM Monday, Jan. 13: 1-3 pm Youth Sewing Infinity Scarf Use 4 fat quarters to sew up an infinity scarf. This project is a perfect project for beginning sewers. $5 plus supplies. 3 Sewing Machine & Software Classes Explore Your Sewing Machine Explore the features and stitches of your new machine. You will stitch samples of the utility stitches, buttonhole(s) and basic sewing techniques. No charge for machines purchased at Rae-Bon, $50 for others. BYOM Saturday, January 18: 10 am-noon Embroidery Basics (for all machines that do hooped computerized embroidery) This class will cover the basics of machine embroidery which includes machine functions, thread selection, stabilizer selection and positioning designs. No charge for machines purchased at Rae-Bon, $150 for others. BYOM Monday, January 20: 1-4 pm Embroidery Design Placement In this class we will have tips to make your hooping less stressful. Learn a few tools to ensure precise design placement for professional looking results. The book used for this class is Machine Embroidery in 6 Easy Lessons by Eileen Roche. It includes the Angle Finder, Centering Ruler, Target Ruler, and Target Stickers. $20.00 plus book and supplies. BYOM with embroidery unit. Tuesday, January 28: 5-7 pm Basic Computer Skills for Machine Embroidery Do you spend more time getting your designs into or out of your computer than stitching them? If so, this is the class for you! Learn basic computer skills in this class to help you find your designs and move them to your machine with ease. Some fundamental functions covered in this class will be making folders and sub-folders for design organization, re-naming designs, how to move designs to your machine from a CD and down loading designs from the web. Please bring a laptop, design CD, and Basic Computer Skill for Embroiderers. $25 includes a jump drive Tuesday, January 14: 5-7 pm Floriani Software Become acquainted with your Floriani Total Control software as we work through the Floriani lessons. Bring in your laptop with the Floriani Software already loaded. $10, No charge if software was purchased at Rae-Bon. Monday, January 20: 5-7 pm Class Policies Call or stop in to sign up and pay for the class of your choice. Class fee is due when you register. Phone registrations ( ) accepted only with a charge card payment. The class supply list will be available when you register and pay for the class. Supplies are not included in the class fee. Please have supplies purchased before class. Kits required are available at the store. BYOM means bring your own machine. No photocopied patterns or books will be allowed in classes. We consider your enrollment to be a commitment by you to take the class and we in turn make a commitment to the instructor. No cancellations are allowed on classes. Thank you for not asking us to make exceptions. Your sewing machine or serger must be in top working condition before you arrive at class. Students whose equipment is not working properly disturb and slow down the class. We service all brands of machines and sergers so come see us prior to the start of the class. If you get together a group of 2 or more friends, we would be happy to setup a class date and time just for you. 3

4 Crazy Quilters Squared Join the Crazy Quilters Squared to work on handwork. No experience necessary, just a desire to learn. The red door will be the only one open. No charge. sign up and receive back patterns. Thursday, January 9: 7-9 pm Create with Embroidery Learn a new machine embroidery technique each month. This year we are going to mix it up a bit. Some months we will have an Anita Goodesign workshop and some months we will have projects from other embroidery companies to demonstrate for you. Later in the year, we will also be debuting a new format for Anita Goodesign, the TV episode will be packed with projects, techniques, and inspiration. With the Anita Goodesign workshop you ll receive a packet with the embroidery design needed for the project. We will also include the design for other projects as much as possible. Each month you can purchase a kit to complete the project. Cost is $15. Friday, January 3 (Cupcake Cozie) Video played at 11 am, 2 pm, and 6:00 pm Monthly Gatherings Please call to pre-register Cutting Up at Noon Join us over the noon hour for a quick demo of a new ruler (or maybe a new product). You re welcome to bring your own lunch or just stop in and visit while you see our new item for the month. Door prizes, contests, food-you never know what to expect each month! Wednesday, January 8: Noon-1 pm Demo & Dessert We ll provide some tasty snack while you learn about new products, machines, or fabrics that have arrived in the past month. You ll also be able to pick up your Party with Patrick pattern and see the next project. Receive a 10% discount on any new items highlighted that day. This month we ll be playing an exciting game, bring 6 fat quarters to participate. Tuesday, January 21: 1:00 pm or 6:00 pm Party with Patrick Join us each month to receive your new surprise pattern in full color. These exclusive club patterns could be a table topper, placemat, mini quilt... It s a surprise! Plus receive a bonus recipe. The patterns feature applique, but for the machine embroider there will be a design available for purchase. Kits will also be available. Sign up still available. Tuesday, January 21: 1:00 pm or 6:00 pm PhD (projects half done) Study Hour Let s make this the year to finish all those half done projects! Each Thursday, we ll have the classroom available to work on your projects. See page 5 for some added incentives for completing your projects. This is not a club, it is open to everyone. If you don t want to participate in the contest, no problem, you can just come and sew. Sign up is required to reserve your spot. There is no charge. Thursday, January 16, 23, & 30: 12-8 pm 4

5 Work on your PhD in Sewing (Projects Half Done) Join us for open sewing time to complete all your half done projects. On January 16 bring in your ten projects. Each project needs to be less than 50% completed (to be judged at our discretion). We will enter the projects on a note card in the number order you tell us. Once your projects are entered on your card they cannot be changed. On the first of each month we will draw a number. For example if we draw number 3 at the beginning of the month, each person will need to complete project 3. You must be at PhD to turn in the project and get credit for the completion. We will only check in projects during PhD hours! When your project is complete your name will go into a drawing for our monthly prize. Finish all 10 projects and receive a bonus at the end of the year. If you have extra time work on other projects, but it will be a gamble as to what number will be drawn the next month. There will be no number drawn in January or December. We will announce the number in our , on facebook, and post it in the shop. This is not a club, it is open to everyone. If you don t want to include your projects in the contest, no problem, you can just come and sew. Sign up is required to reserve your spot. The classroom is available from noon to 8 pm. There is no charge. We ll have drawings, movies, and maybe a game or two. Prizes will be awarded for most creative pajamas, best slippers, and craziest bed head as voted on by your fellow sewers. Bring your favorite snack to share. Friday, January 17 The party starts at 6 pm and goes till midnight. No charge, sign up to reserve your spot 5

6 Join us in a sew along! We ll be sewing up an adorable sampler using blocks from the book, Quilty Fun. Each week stop by the shop to pick up cutting instructions for the next block. We ll also have a few optional gettogethers to show off your progress, sew together in person, play a few games, and of course snacks. No cost to participate in the sew along. 8 Connections Batik Block of the Month Connections is a beautiful batik quilt featuring Artisan Batiks by Robert Kaufman. Pattern is designed by Chris Hoover of Whirligig Designs. You ll love the soothing blue, purple, and green colors. Fabric will arrive any day and we will begin cutting kits. Finished size is 104 x 104. $24.95 per month Simpler Times 30s Fabric Block of the Month Simpler Times is a lovely Block of the Month done in the new Kimberly s Garden 1930s line. This is a 12 month program. We plan to start this BOM in February. The fabric is here but we are waiting on the pattern. Finished size is 81 x 81. Monthly fee TBD 8

9 Bertie s Year Flannel & Wool Block of the Month Bertie s Year is a monthly piecing and applique program designed by Bonnie Sullivan. The Bertie s Year pattern series features a charming bird for each month of the year and a unique border created with half-square triangles. Each block is decorated with a variety of easy embroidery stitches and button embellishments. We are also offering a 6 spool thread pack. The thread is hand dyed Valdani pearle cotton chosen to coordinate with the flannels. You will have enough to stitch all 12 quilt blocks. This program will begin in February.
