1 The Rae-Bon Review A newsletter to further your enjoyment of quilting, sewing, and related hobbies. J A N U A R Y Store Hours: Monday- Friday: 10am-5:30 pm Saturday: 10am-4pm Sunday: Closed Happy New Year! The calendar has flipped to a new year and it promises to be a fun filled year of sewing and learning at the shop! Already our calendar is filling up with classes, retreats, and guest educators to get us going on our projects. There is a continuing influx of young people entering the world of sewing so we are again offering youth sewing classes beginning in January. Moms and grandmas are encouraged (but not mandatory) to attend these classes with your new sewer. We have a new format and machines will be provided. See page 2 for more information. It s sure to be a lot of fun. It is so exciting to see the kids take an interest in sewing and quilting. Due to popular demand we will be hosting another quilting retreat in Hankinson, ND February 4-7. Space is limited so sign up soon. Snippets from Sandy We have Deborah Jones from North Carolina coming to do a great embroidery event called Club Ed February The event will be held at the Country Inn & Suites in Fargo. The cost includes projects to learn on in class which will then be donated to a local charity. You will take home the exact same projects to duplicate at home. Your learning is reinforced plus everyone goes home with all projects. Brother embroidery machines will be provided! So if you have never done machine embroidery this is a great way to test the water. Lunch will also be provided. Check page 8 for further details. It has been several years since we have hosted an Anita Goodesign Event. Mark your calendar and get signed up for March 18 & 19 to join in the fun of Anita s Wonderland. Great projects in a two day team sewing atmosphere on Baby Lock Machines. See page 9 for details. We are looking for ward to a great year and want you to be part of it. Learn to Quilt At the end of the 4 sessions, you will have learned the basic skills of quilt making: fabric selection, rotary cutting, accurate piecing, and adding borders.

4 Sessions: Wednesday, Jan. 13, 20, 27, & Feb. 3: 1-4 pm Quilt It More than One Way to Bind a Quilt The last step in any quilt is to cover the raw edges with binding.

Bring sewing machine, thread, & basic sewing supplies. Don t forget your binding fabric or purchase in class. Strips can be cut in class. Class fee of $15 + supplies and book. Monday, Jan.

Bring your embroidery machine and a 6 x 10 or larger hoop. You must bring the book Edge to Edge Quilting on your Embroidery Machine by Amelie Scott Designs or purchase one in class. Class fee of $60 includes quilt sandwich and thread. Class is limited to 6 people. Monday, Jan. 11: Noon-4 pm or 5-9 pm This year we are going to work through the book I Can Quilt by Carolyn S. Vagts. Purchase of the book will be required for class and book must be brought to class. Each month we will be completing a different project. Students may pick and choose which months they want to attend; they are not required to attend all 12 classes. The class fee will vary by month depending on the amount of fabric used as all fabric will be included. Use of an embroidery machine will also be included in the class fee. Youth Sewing 2 Folded Four-Patch Coaster In January we will be making folded four-patch coaster. We will embroider an initial on one corner. Class fee of $15 includes fabric, thread, and use of our machine. Saturday, Jan. 23: 1-4 pm (Going forward Youth sewing will be the 3rd Saturday)

Thursday, January 14: 10:00 am - Noon Embroidery Basics (for all machines that do hooped computerized embroidery) This class will cover the basics of machine embroidery which includes machine functions, thread selection, stabilizer selection, and positioning designs. Open to Brother, Baby Lock, and Viking owners. No charge for machines purchased at Rae-Bon; $150 for others. Bring your machine, embroidery arm, power cord, embroidery foot, 4 x 4 (or 5 x 7 ) hoop, and spool of embroidery thread. Thursday, January 14: 1:00-4:00 pm Beyond the Basics: Baby Lock Destiny & Brother Dream Owners Each month we will expand our knowledge of these top of the line machines. This month we will be going over some of the new features that are only on the top of the line machines. Bring your embroidery machine, 8 x 12 hoop, basic embroidery/sewing supplies, several spools of embroidery thread, bobbin fill, and one spool of sewing thread. Colors won t matter-we will just be doing practice pieces. No charge if you purchased your machine at Rae-Bon; $60.00 to others. Kit fee is $20 Thursday, January 21: 1:00-4:00 pm Explore your Scan N Cut Learn the basics of using you Scan N Cut. The class will cover scanning a pattern, cutting multiple pieces of a pattern, scan to cut a design printed on fabric, how to use every scrap of fabric, using built in templates, and more. We will discuss how to get your fabric ready for the Scan N Cut. No charge if you purchased your Scan N Cut at Rae- Bon; $50.00 to others. Bring your Scan N Cut, all mats, and accessories. Fabrics will be provided in class. Monday, January 14: 5:00-7:00 pm Scan N Cut Canvas ScanNCut Canvas is a cloud-based web application that combines the versatility of your favorite design software and the awesome cutting power of your ScanNCut, giving you the ability to easily convert.svg files to.fcm, Image Tracing and Processing Overlapping Patterns. Supply list given at registration. Bring your embroidery machine and basic sewing supplies. Friday, January 22: Sew with us at 11:00 am or 6:00 pm Class Policies Simple Whatnots Club three has begun! It s not too late to join Claudia in the world of miniature quilts (nothing will be bigger than 40 square). Each month we ll meet to talk about the next project. Claudia will share tips, tricks, and new products. We ll have coffee, snacks, and show & tell. To join the club, simply purchase the Simple Whatnots fat quarter tower. Tuesday, January 12: 1:00 or 6:00 pm Call or stop in to sign up and pay for the class of your choice. Class fee is due when you register. Phone registrations ( ) accepted only with a charge card payment. The class supply list will be available when you register and pay for the class. Supplies are not included in the class fee. Please have supplies purchased before class. Kits required are available at the store. BYOM means bring your own machine. No photocopied patterns or books will be allowed in classes. We consider your enrollment to be a commitment by you to take the class and we in turn make a commitment to the instructor. No cancellations are allowed on classes. Thank you for not asking us to make exceptions. Your sewing machine or serger must be in top working condition before you arrive at class. Students whose equipment is not working properly disturb and slow down the class. We service all brands of machines and sergers so come see us prior to the start of the class. 4 If you get together a group of 2 or more friends, we would be happy to setup a class date and time just for you.

This includes: bedding, towels, meals, one 6 ft sewing table per person in a well lit sewing area, irons/ironing boards, and cutting tables. 5

7 Radiant Reflections Batik Block of the Month This new block of the month from Marcus Fabric uses 36 gorgeous batiks. Each month you ll receive the pattern and a layer cake to complete a few blocks and cut some of the border. The program is 9 months. This is a quilt along where you follow the instructions given to you each month to make the appropriate blocks but you have no idea what the end quilt is going to look like! How much fun does that sound!? This BOM will begin in January 2016 and run for 8 months featuring Mon Ami fabric collection by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics. You will receive all fabric needed to complete the top and binding at sign up. Each month you will receive a part of the pattern. The finished quilt will not be revealed until the last month of the program. On Thursday, January 21, we ll handout the first pattern and share tips for completing the first block from 5:00-6:00 pm. Quilt Shops across the country are joining together to collect new panties, underwear, or pajamas for women in their local community. All items collected at Rae-Bon will be donated to the YWCA in Fargo. Continue the season of giving and bring in new store-packaged panties, underwear, or pajamas.
