1 HONOLULU CHAPTER ~ Chartered November 3, 1967 President's Message Greg Mortenson, author of the book Three Cups of Tea, shared this thought when interviewed: In Africa, they say, Educate a boy and you educate an individual. Educate a girl and you educate a community. In the article interviewing Mortenson, author Judith Stone writes: Several global studies show that sending girls to school significantly decreases infant and maternal mortality rates, helps stabilize population growth, and improves the quality of health and life for everyone in the community. Our three ASIST judges, Allen B. Uyeda, President and CEO, First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Ltd., Karen Aka, President, Knowledge, Inc. and Family Court Judge, First Circuit, Paul T. Murakami, spent a difficult Saturday morning narrowing down eight 2009 ASIST applicants to determine our winning scholarship recipient. In the end, one of the judges graciously offered to sweeten our pot by adding $2,000 to the ASIST scholarship so we could offer a total of six awards to deserving women. This story could have been written 14 years ago when ASIST first started. David Pietsch, Jr., President of Title Guaranty Services, was one of our very first ASIST judges then. Touched by an inspiring story, Mr. Pietsch added a bonus to the awards, offering twelve interisland round trips to that year s winner who had a young family back home on Molokai while studying at UH Manoa. In 2002, ASIST Judge Kusuma Cooray added an 11 th award of $1,000. And in 2003, with the help of the Rotary Club Diamond Head and Mr. Anton Krucky and the Krucky ohana fund, again ASIST received an additional $1,000 so 11 awards could be presented. ASIST interviews tug at heart strings while opening avenues for adult students who face enormous daily adversities. This year s three ASIST judges unanimously agreed that education is key and that EWI and ASIST can make a difference, one person at a time. Be sure to mark your calendar to attend the July 22 nd ASIST Awards dinner meeting. Bring your executive(s), bring a friend, and/or bring a colleague. Improve your quality of health and life and join us for an inspiring and heartwarming ASIST presentations awards meeting, one that almost didn t happen! Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it. - Marian Wright Edelman Your enlightened EWI of Honolulu President, Valerie Tanaka IN THIS ISSUE President's Message EWISP Awards 2-3 Golf Tournament 4 Tournament Volunteers 5 Board Meeting Minutes 6-7 Sirius-ly Speaking 8 School Supplies Collection 9 July Birthdays 10 EWI Mission and Vision 10 1

The unveiling of the website update is tentatively scheduled for the end of June. EWISP: The EWISP Awards Dinner was a great success. The committee came under budget by 65%, spending only $ for the dinners, leis, and the judges gifts. Membership: The committee has several perspective firms inquiring about EWI. Philanthropy: June 13, 2009 is the Autism Walk at Ala Moana Beach Park. The committee s goal of $300 was achieved through generous representatives donations. 7 Sirius-ly Speaking Q: My dog chews her tail. Not all the time though. She does it more when we are not paying attention to her. How can I get her to stop? I ve tried scolding her when I see her but she will not stop. She also does it when we are not at home and I m afraid she will eventually start to make her tail bleed. Right now her tail is still in good shape and has no bald spots or scars from all her chewing. A: If she does not have fleas or any skin problems it sounds like she has learned how to get your attention. You stated that she chews her tail when you are not paying any attention to her. When you see her you will scold her. Well, the scolding has not helped to stop the chewing but what it has actually done is to reinforce the chewing and teach her to continue to chew her tail. How can this be you may ask yourself. It s because even though you scold her for chewing her tail and you perceive the scolding as a negative event for her she sees it very differently. From her perspective even though you are not pleased with her by chewing her tail she has been able to get your attention. Even though you are not happy with her, she has gotten your attention and is no longer being ignored. Negative attention is better than no attention she figures. What to do then? Instead of waiting for her to make a mistake (chew her tail) teach her a new strategy to get your attention. When you are busy make it a point to notice what she is doing. If she is quiet and not chewing her tail go over to her and give her some attention. If you cannot physically go over to her then call over to her that she is a good girl and doing well. This will be harder for you than her. I am advising you to pay attention to quiet passive behavior and people are conditioned to pay attention to active behavior. It s worth the effort you put in though. You and she will be much happier in the long run. WANTED: School Supplies For: Ms. Jodie Miyagi s (Yes, she s former EWIer Debbie Miyagi s daughter. ) 1 st Grade Class at Ka Waihonua Elementary School in Nanakuli Wanted: Composition Marble Notebooks- Wide Rule Pencils Portfolio Folders (with pockets and/or prongs) Jump ropes Glue Sticks or bottles Rulers Scissors Crayons Balls Gently used Picture books Please bring your donations to the July 22 ASIST dinner meeting.
