1 HONOLULU EDITION Chartered November 3, 1967 Vol. 7, No. 9 Letter from the President Aloha EWI of Honolulu! Congratulations to Karen Garcia (Ways & Means Director) for her leadership! Our 20 th Annual Golf Tournament held on Friday, August 14, was a huge success! Our annual tournament generated funds predominantly for our EWISP and ASIST scholarships, as well as our general operating account. We are forever grateful that Hurricane Hilda weakened to a storm and did not affect our tournament!. We have reached the end of the chapter year, and it s been an amazing journey. Thank you to the EWI of Honolulu Board Maegan Brandt (Insurance Solutions LLC), Kelly Nishimura (Remedy Intelligent Staffing), Roseann Freitas (Archipelago Hawaii), Karen Garcia (Hawaiian Electric), Michelle Nakahara (Starwood Hotels in Waikiki), Karen Choe (New York Life Insurance), Jocelyn Collado (Becker Communications), Jennifer Ihara (Level 3 Communications), Jocelyn Palafox (Mokulele Airlines), Brenda Kanno (Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii), Wanda Sanchez (SageView Advisory Group) and Wendy Kia (Marie Louise Fine Garment Cleaners) for stepping up this year and your hard work and dedication to EWI of Honolulu. Each of you has made significant contributions throughout the year and helped to make our organization stronger as we continued to focus on the 3C s Connections, Careers and Community. To the members of EWI of Honolulu... Thank you! Mahalo for your participation this year in our monthly meetings, corporate webinars, pau hana mixers, book club gatherings, our 20 th annual golf tournament, philanthropy projects, and lunch bunches. We continued to strengthen our own connections and our community. At the start of the year, I chose the word excite as the focus for EWI of Honolulu. From Merriam Webster, the word excite is defined as, to call to activity, to raise to a higher level, to cause feelings of enthusiasm and to make someone feel energetic. Throughout the year, I challenged all of you to participate in the monthly corporate webinars, have a one-on-one with another EWI member, send in your suggestions to help improve our chapter, share your New Year s resolutions, promote your member firm, and volunteer for a philanthropy project. All of this was to encourage you to do more, to challenge yourself, and to help you grow as an individual. Your personal development is a key component to your success in your career and in EWI. But, wait, we re not done yet. We still have a few more events to get excited about... Please join us at the Installation Dinner on Wednesday, September 9, Sheraton Waikiki 5:30 p.m. as we congratulate President-elect, Maegan Brandt and her board of directors. This will be a business meeting and quorum will be required as we approve the budget. Maegan Brandt, Jocelyn Palafox (Na Wahine Alakai Scholarship Winner) and Brenda Kanno (Parliamentarian) and myself will be traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM), September 23-27, We ll have an opportunity to connect and share ideas with other chapter members and have a little fun learning how to line dance too! If you haven t had an opportunity to volunteer for a philanthropy project this year, you have another chance. Please join Wendy Kia (Philanthropy Chair) and her committee on Saturday, October 31, at the Honolulu Zoo for our annual Reading Rally. Please contact Wendy to volunteer and wear a Halloween costume to the event. Look forward to seeing all of you there! I thank you again for this incredible opportunity to serve and a wonderful experience! 12 Shari Ann Daluson Bank of Hawaii Shari Ann Daluson was born and raised on Oahu and is a graduate of Moanalua High School. Shari has a lot of diverse interests/hobbies that occupy her time away from work. She is an avid sports fan and enjoys watching pro football and NCAA Men s Basketball. Go Steelers! Go Duke! She also enjoys watching motorsports events like NHRA and NASCAR, and was even able to attend several NHRA events. She enjoys fishing, archery, and hunting. She is also addicted to romance novels and cookbooks (that have photos). And, like most Hawaii residents, she loves visiting Hawaii s 9th island, Las Vegas, whenever possible. Shari is an Assistant Vice President and the Process Improvement and Compliance Officer in Bank of Hawaii s Personal Trust Department. She joined Bank of Hawaii in 2008 after 13 years with Aloha Airlines, where she worked in the Systems Operations Control Center as the Passenger Service Manager. At Bank of Hawaii, Shari is responsible for ensuring that the Personal Trust Department is compliant with all federal regulations and Bank policies and procedures, maintaining Personal Trust policies and procedures, working on numerous projects, and promoting teamwork and creating efficiencies. Bank of Hawaii s Personal Trust Department specializes in relationships with high net worth clients and the elderly who have accumulated substantial assets, who need and deserve professional advice, sophisticated products, personalized service and convenience. Personal Trust works closely with the client to understand their needs and circumstances. 12 Page
13 Ashleigh Adams Archipelago Hawaii We welcome Ashleigh Adams as a second representative for member firm Archipelago Hawaii! Ashleigh began working with Archipelago Hawaii as an accountant in October of 2014 and has loved it ever since! She grew up in Vienna, VA, a small town outside of Washington D.C. From there, she moved to North Carolina to pursue a bachelor s degree at East Carolina University. While at ECU, Ashleigh was the Event Coordinator for the Financial Management Association and the VP of Alumni Relations for Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity. She graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. After graduation, Ashleigh moved to Hawaii to join her husband, Tommy, who is an active duty Marine. Ashleigh first met Roseann Freitas from Archipelago Hawaii through member, Abigail Jacinto of Accountemps. Through that connection and attending various EWI dinner meetings as a guest, Ashleigh felt a part of EWI. That s when she knew EWI was a great organization that she wanted to be involved in. Ashleigh s main responsibilities at Archipelago Hawaii include managing accounts payable and accounts receivable invoices, data-entry of client transactions, reconciling accounts, and billing. Roseann and Ashleigh collaborate together to manage and improve cash flow. In addition to accounting, she works alongside their designers to review plans and pricing to prepare for client meetings. Ashleigh never thought that she would work in the design industry, but has found that it is truly a blessing to be working with such an energetic and creative team! Ashleigh and her husband Tommy try to take advantage of all the adventures Hawaii has to offer. You can spot them almost every weekend relaxing at Lanikai beach. They also enjoy exploring different trails and eating at new restaurants. But above all else, they love spending time with their loveable and rambunctious German Shepherd, Kai. 13 Page
