1 HONOLULU EDITION Chartered November 3, 1967 Vol. 5, No. 6 Letter from President Summer has arrived! Wow, it is the time of the year where the fruits of our (committees) labor are borne with various events focusing on our Connections, Careers and Community. Paying It Forward reaps the most Return on Investment. Active involvement in our Chapter provides many opportunities to experience the rewards of contributing to our community and future leaders. This was exemplified at our EWISP awards dinner on May 8 which was over the top as both our finalists and semi-finalists were present to accept their various awards totaling $13,000! On May 10 our Philanthropy Committee sponsored a successful Pre-Mother s Day Pampering at the Salvation Army s Women s Way Shelter. And on July 10 we will honor our adult students at our ASIST awards. Further opportunities are planned throughout the remainder of the year with various activities at the Women s Way Shelter. The achievements in providing scholarships, spa nights, reading rallies, firm nights, etc. are not pulled together without considerable planning and commitment of time and energy. The chairs of our various committees have pledged their commitment to insure that our programs and activities are memorable, purposeful, rewarding and fun! This month we will be conducting a Business Meeting at the Sheraton Waikiki, where membership will elect our delegates for LCAM and other chapter business will be conducted. The slate of Officers and Directors will also be presented. The individuals who have accepted the opportunity to step up to the plate in leading our Chapter will insure that our Chapter remains healthy with continued growth and development. Our meeting will be further enhanced by member firm Sheraton Waikiki as they provide us with an exclusively EWI menu paired with wine and fully validated parking. 8 Executive Women International Honolulu Chapter and Its Programs Where does your money go? Executive Women International was established in California in Since then, cities throughout the United States and Canada have joined, forming a prestigious networking organization of key firms and individuals. Today, EWI has more than 2,700 companies and 3,000 representatives in chapters in major cities. The Honolulu Chapter was established in 1967 and remains strong thanks to the support of our member firms and their representatives. EWI brings together individuals from diverse businesses to promote member firms, enhance personal and professional development, and encourage community involvement. Your participation in this golf tournament will help EWI support its mission and provide generous scholarships for Hawaii s youth and adult students in transition. EWISP (Executive Women International Scholarship Program) provides scholarship funds to outstanding high school seniors for their pursuit of a baccalaureate degree from a post-secondary education institution. Students are judged on their application materials, oral and written communication skills, creativity, scholastic records, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership qualities and honors, attitude, financial need and clearly defined career goals. ASIST (Adult Students in Scholastic Transition) Scholarship Program provides financial support to adults in transitional situations (non-traditional students). Financial need and social, physical, and economic challenges are some of the criteria for selection. 16 DID YOU KNOW The COMMUNITY difference... Two programs where EWI of Honolulu makes a huge difference to the individuals we touch are highlighted below: EWI Scholarship Program (EWISP) The EWI Scholarship Program (EWISP) is an annual, competition-based program which awards more than $200,000 (organization-wide) in college scholarship money to qualifying high school seniors. A student is nominated by each school. Only one applicant per school is allowed. A panel of judges (one each from the business, education and civic sectors) selects the winning students based on their scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, good citizenship, financial need, and extra-curricular activities. Each Chapter determines the number and amount of scholarships it will award each year. EWI of Honolulu has been able to award scholarships averaging $8,000-10,000/a year. A chapter winner is submitted to the Corporate-level competition for a chance to win one of multiple scholarships ranging between $1,000 and $5,000. EWI of Honolulu has participated in the EWISP program since its inception in Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) The ASIST scholarship is an educational scholarship program for the benefit of nontraditional students. These include persons who are past high school age and who are entering a college, university, or trade school and/or the workforce for the first time, non-traditional students already enrolled in a college/university or trade program and are re-training due to changes in the workplace, or who otherwise are not the traditional college or trade school student. Last year, local EWI Chapters and Corporate ASIST scholarships totaled more than $250,000. The goal of the ASIST scholarship is to enable recipients to improve their self-esteem and to have a positive impact on their personal life, employment, family, and community. Chapters work with educational providers and social service agencies to identify potential ASIST candidates. Students apply and compete at the local Chapter level, and winners are selected by the Chapter s panel of judges. Chapter-level winners then compete at the Corporate level, where thirteen scholarships ranging from $2,000 - $10,000 are awarded. EWI of Honolulu has offered the ASIST scholarship since Chapter awards have averaged $8,000-10,000 a year. This corner of information is to help us understand the various facets of our organization. If you have a question or suggestion for other topics, please let your Board members know and we ll be happy to share the information in future articles! 16 Page
