1 HONOLULU EDITION Chartered November 3, 1967 Vol. 9, No. 7 Letter from the President Aloha EWI of Honolulu! We all have times in our lives where change is inevitable. Change Brings Opportunity Nido Qubein. I have experienced change many times in my life and one just recently in my career. I am honored to be representing Member Firm Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc. It was always a dream of mine to one day be back in Human Resources and Hawaiian Dredging has given me the perfect opportunity. EWI of Honolulu has allowed me to stretch and grow beyond what I could have ever imagined. Now I look forward to growing even more as I enter in to this new journey. July is here and it is an exciting time for EWI. We have our ASIST scholarship dinner, Into the Future, coming up on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at member firm Hilton Waikiki Beach Hotel. We will be awarding $20,000 in ASIST scholarships! Wear your EWI Pin and, wear EWI blue too! Please invite guests and your executives to the ASIST dinner! Friday, August 11th is our 22nd Annual Golf Tournament! Proceeds from our annual golf tournament are the main source of funding for our two scholarship programs (EWISP and ASIST). Our Ways & Means Director (JaDawn Perez American Carpet One) and her committee really need your help in making our 22nd Annual Golf Tournament a success. If your firm hasn t signed up for a team yet please do so as soon as possible. Please contact JaDawn or any of the W&M Committee. A great big Mahalo to Pohai Ryan and Hi ilani Shibata from the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association for sharing with us their wealth of knowledge. She has replaced Kim Weprin of EWI of Columbus and her term runs until the end of September, What will Maegan do as a Corporate Board member? 7 JUNE DINNER RECAP June s meeting was at the historic YWCA, Fuller Hall, in downtown Honolulu. The evening buzzed with high energy as we welcomed new members to EWI with networking opportunities. The Thought of the Day set the tone for the evening. Paraphrasing Maya Angelou, if you don t like something, change it. If you can t change it change your attitude The Nominating Committee presented the slate of Officers and Directors for the board. Membership also voted on the Delegates and Alternate to LCAM in September. The program presenters were from the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association, a non-profit organization, which is celebrating 20 years this year. Their mission continues to educate those in the hospitality industry as well as everyone who benefits from our number one industry. We learned the true meaning of Aloha, the correct pronunciation of major streets and landmarks and how meanings of a word can change with the ʻokina. Speaker Hi'ilani Shibata made learning fun and helped us to be mindful of speaking ʻŌlelo Hawai`i correctly. Submitted by Karen Yonemoto Pohai Ryan, Executive Director of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association has generously offered to speak/train your staff with various workshops. Please checkout the training classes in cultural education or Olelo Hawaii at Pohai is offering EWI members special consideration when a training session is booked!
