Well, finally I have found the time to build it. As always I had a lot of fun personalizing the animals and colors.

Well, finally I have found the time to build it. As always I had a lot of fun personalizing the animals and colors. I also added wheels to make the Ark more fun to play with. This made the Ark glide across the floor and the kids love it. This plan set is available at ToymakingPlans.com. Joel is a master of presentation. He has created a fun and interesting photo study by using simple elements found in his garden. He has painted impressionistic details on the concrete wall to suggest the Biblical flood. The roller wheels were pretty simple to add. The ark is of rather large dimensions so it has some weight to it.

To solve this, four wheels were added in the bottom panel of the ark. The wheels can be cut from a 1-1/4 diameter dowel and are approximately 1/2 thick. You can also buy the wheels online in the USA at craftparts.com. The scroll saw was used to cut the openings for the wheels. The openings are oversize to allow for easy rotation of the wheels. First, the axle holes were drilled into the part and then the wheels and axles were added. The animals and ladder fit nicely over the wheels and the wheels will rotate when an animal is resting on the top of them. The kids have great fun rolling the ark around the house to avoid the fantasy storms blowing about. 2 July 20, 2015 Monday

3 The animals are first sawn from a block of clear lumber. Clear lumber is preferred. The toys are less likely to break. I also don t like to use wood with knots since the knots can separate making a choking hazard. Clear lumber also makes it much easier to carve details and to achieve a quality painted finish. 3 July 20, 2015 Monday

When beginning a new project it is helpful to first decide what to make and how it is to be modified. Only then is it time to begin. The Ark parts are simple to saw to shape and easily fit together.

The Ark parts are simple to saw to shape and easily fit together. The Ark plan set is very well designed for easy sawing and construction. The toy designers at ToymakingPlans.com did a superb job planning how each part fits together. They made sure that it was possible to make with simple tools and common materials The quick-adjust level clamps make it a lot easier to control the gluing and fitting. The lever adjustments can be tightened to just the right pressure for a true fit. The view to the left shows the Ark s bow and stern being glued and clamped to the Ark bottom. The Ark doors on both sides of the Ark were attached to make sure that the bow and stern were in alignment. Then the clamps were used to attach the bow and stern. Then the doors were removed as I waited for the glue to dry. Look closely at the bottom front edge and you will see the axle holes for the planned four wheels. 4 July 20, 2015 Monday

5 The swinging doors are attached prior to applying the upper deck. The doors are held in place by sturdy dowel pins that can take a lot of rough play. The double door feature is loved by the kids because two buddies can play with the ark at the same time. 5 July 20, 2015 Monday

At this point a quality check was done to make sure that all glue joints were strong and that all rough surfaces, sharp edges and splinters were removed.
