2 Kit Contents Here you can see the original 1/32nd scale kit from Precedent. It includes a nice instruction booklet with some essential photographs, plenty of ply and balsa, precedent's semi scale plan and some nice artwork on the box.

Constructing the hull The precedent kit follows the usual plywood frame and stringers method with carved balsa blocks forming the front curved bow section.

I prefer to fit the propshaft at this stage for easy alignment. I thought the prop shaft I choose was a bit on the thin side so I added a support block. The work-mate mate formed a good flat surface to ensure the deck ended up flat and not distorted by the hull stringers.

4 Constructing the hull String was used to bind and apply pressure to the stringers until the glue sets. I like to use Humbrol Cascamite resin glue, from experience this forms a strong and waterproof joint. Its a good idea to transfer small amounts to an old 35mm film canister as the resin absorbs water from the atmosphere and you can end up with a useless solid ball in the tin.

5 Constructing the hull Plywood skins are applied to the wood skeleton frame, pinned and glued in place. A subsequent coating of car body filler ensure a smooth surface can be achieved.

6 Constructing the hull Here you can see the boat taking shape, the basic construction of the cabin makes this quite hard work to end up with the correct shape around the doors and windows.

8 Constructing the hull This shot shows how the cockpit area cab be improved by adding some basic detailing and constructing a control panel. The photographs from the kit were used as reference, along with the Tamiya kit.

Also note the windshield carefully cut from sections of clear plastic. The radar was based on the drawing in the kit, but from many photos this appears to be incorrect and should look like a "toblerone" shaped bar instead of the curved version I made. Mine also rotates via a small motor and gear system hidden inside the cockpit.

10 Constructing the Torpedo Racks This is a shot of one of the Torpedo racks made completely from wood, since there are 4 and therefore 8 end and side pieces I made a Brass drilling / cutting template.

From Photos the front or rear torpedoes are sometimes replaced by extra fuel tanks. Note also the etched nameplate, LED navigation lights and cabin door addition.

12 Constructing the fittings Here you can see some of the fittings I made at an early stage, the control panel and ready use ammo lockers from Balsa/ply, the radar and danforth anchor from brass. The small nails formed the voice pipes and shop bought items are the lifebelt and fairleads etc.

An important note is that the plane of the radar rotation should be horizontal when the boat is on the plane and not horizontal to the boat deck as I have made it.

14 Constructing the fittings Here you can see some of the scratchbuit fittings I made, the wood and brass parts for thr 40mm Bofors gun, the balsa gunners box, the hatch covers and the torpedo cowl. I enjoyed making the gun, I had to make my own plans as I could not find any at the time.

16 Constructing the 40mm Bofors Here you can see the finished bofors guns, not perfect but good enough, the a frame to secure the barrell was made from thin brass rod. Leaving the brass showing on the barrell is a bit of poetic licence, it should be all black I thing, although I have seen some Parts painted red on Navy Days on other ships.

17 Constructing the fittings Ok, Confession time, I had to ask a friend to make the turned brass mastheads and vents, but I'm now the proud owner of a TOYO ML210 lathe so I can make my own from now on.

18 Constructing the fittings The stands for the flare launchers were also turned along with the aluminum vent or cooling stacks (does anyone know what these are?), only the copper tube was used from the kit.

19 Constructing the fittings Here are a couple of rear side views, the silver walking plates were made just by scoring plywood in a diagonal pattern and painted silver. The life rafts were bought items.
