Cut two pieces of 2 x 3 mm wooden strip to fit across the width of the grating, and glue them in place as shown in the photograph, with their 2-mm sides in contact with the grating. b Cut a further six lengths and glue them as shown. 241
2 c Round the corners of the strips, as shown in the photo. d Sand over the surface of the grating assembly so that it is smooth and level. Use a clear varnish as a finish for the grating. e Glue the grating assembly over the hatch aft of the capstan. 242
3 f To create the stanchions, take a 2 x 3 mm wooden strip and shape one end to a slight diagonal. g Measure the distance between the deck and the top of the bulwark and cut the wooden strip from the last step to this length, measuring to the tip of the diagonal end. Then glue it into place midway between two gun ports, with the diagonal end nearest the top of the bulwark. Cut and shape a further three stanchions to fit on the main deck, and glue them into place between the gun ports. h Cut and glue another length to fit on the quarter deck, covering the join between the bulwarks. 243
4 i Cut, shape and glue another two stanchions, to fit between the circular gun ports on the quarterdeck j Prepare another stanchion and glue it in line with the edging on the poop deck (red-dotted line). Glue it into place so that it overlaps both sides of the bulwark evenly. b Cut another piece to fit upright at the ends of the length fitted in the last step, as shown, and glue into place, centered on the bulwark. 245
6 c Cut two pieces of the strip to fit the bulwarks at the bow, as shown. d Take one of the 2 x 2 mm strips and glue it in line with the top of the deck at the bow, joining up with the strip from Step a. e Cut and glue another two lengths, to fit at the stern end of the length fitted in Step a. 246
7 f Fit a 2 x 2 mm strip along the side of the bulwarks, in line with the strip fitted in Step a and parallel to the lower strips. g Continue along the hull from the strip in the last step by gluing another in place. It should curve up slightly so that it meets the small stern deck, as shown. h 6 mm Locate the area in the photo, on the bow side of the door. Mark two lines 6 mm apart on the two upper strips, just in front of the seventh middle row gun port. Then cut these sections away, as shown. 247
8 i Cut six lengths of 2 x 2 mm wooden strip to fit between the horizontal strips. Glue them into place so that they are in line with the lines marked in the last step, leaving a gap of 2 mm between them. 2 mm j Glue two lengths of 2 x 2 mm wooden strip, covering the entire length of those fitted in the last step, then glue two pieces of 2 x 3 mm strip between them, as highlighted by the arrows. 10 c Cut another two lengths of 2 x 2 mm wooden strip to fit on the poop deck, as shown. d 8 mm Take a 2 x 2 mm wooden strip and align it with the top of the bulwark. Glue it to the side of the bulwark, keeping it 8 mm above the lower strip. e 10 mm Continue along the bulwarks, and at the stern curve the wooden strip up slightly so that it rests 10 mm above the deck. 250
11 f 7 mm Glue another 2 x 2 mm strip from the next level of the bulwark to the stern, aligning it with the strip below, with a gap of 7 mm between the two at the stern. g 12 mm Glue a final 2 x 2 mm strip at the stern, beginning in line with the highest level of the bulwarks and ending 12 mm below the top of the bulwark at the stern, as shown. Repeat Steps a-g for the other side of the hull. h Cut lengths of 2 x 2 mm wooden strip to cover the semi-circular projections at the bow, and glue them into place. Once the glue is dry, smooth them so they are flush with the deck. 251
12 i Smooth and clean the entire hull, sanding the ends of the wooden strips so they are rounded. j Wipe the hull down to remove any residue from sanding, then paint it with a clear varnish. Wait for the varnish to dry, then wipe the hull down again and apply another coat. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 252

17 Your parts Beakhead bulkheads Rudder fittings Tools and equipment Wire cutters Hammer Tweezers Pliers File Wood stain Glue Sandpaper a Trim the rudder fittings to the required lengths, using the photograph in Step b as a guide. b Glue and nail the rudder fittings to the rudder, as shown. 257
18 c Cut six 6-mm lengths of brass wire and glue them in the semi-circular part of the rudder fittings. d Shape three rudder fittings like those shown on the left; these will fit on either side of the stern keel. The remaining three should be left straight, as they will have to be shaped to fit the hull. e Before attaching the remaining rudder fittings, stain the rudder so that it matches the color of the hull. Then hook the remaining rudder fitting over the wire from Step c, as shown. 258
19 f Position the rudder at the stern and nail into place, as shown. g Smooth the slots of the stem with a file or sandpaper. h Glue the large beakhead bulkhead in place on the stem, in the slot nearest the hull. 259
20 i Glue the next two beakhead bulkheads in place, in order of decreasing size, in the slots of the stem. j Check the positions of the bulkheads they should be situated like those in the photo. k This photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 260
21 Your parts Columns Wooden strips 2 x 7 x 300 mm Wooden dowel 3 x 300 mm Tools and equipment Knife Tweezers Wood glue Superglue Drill/bit a Hold the 3 mm dowel on the main deck and cut a length equal to the height of the fore deck, then glue it into place alongside the stairs on the starboard side, as shown. b Cut a 15-mm length of 2 x 3 mm wooden strip and glue it on the side of the third step of the stairs. Then glue a column in place at the base of the stairs. 261
22 c Remove one of the curved strips from the sheet received on Page 253 and glue into place on top of the wooden strip and column from the last step. Repeat Steps a-c for the port side stairs of the fore deck. d Follow the same process in Steps a-c for the stairs from the main deck to the quarterdeck. e Repeat the same process for the stairs from the quarterdeck to the poop deck. 262
23 f 11 mm On one side of the ship, drill a series of shallow holes with the 0.75 mm drill bit in the wooden strip along the bulwark of the main deck, 11 mm apart. g Apply a drop of glue to one of the holes and place the spiked end of one of the columns into it. Repeat this for the remaining holes. h When the glue holding the columns is dry, glue a 2 x 7 mm wooden strip on top of them and the bulwark of the fore deck up to the point arrowed. 263
24 i Fill in the remaining bare bulwark of this level with more 2 x 7 mm wooden strip. j Glue a shorter length of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip to the upright part, as shown, so that it ends in line with the higher bulwark. Repeat Steps f-j for the other side of the hull. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 264

26 c Smooth the four semi-circular recesses at the bow. Prepare the wooden rings from Page 245. d Test-fit four of the wooden rings, two on either side of the bulwark of the bow deck. Adjust the recesses if necessary, and then glue the rings into place. e Glue the remaining wooden ring in place over the mizzenmast hole. 266
27 f Drill a hole in the center of the strip on the port side of the bow, highlighted by the arrow, then drill a further two holes at equal intervals on each side of it. Repeat for the starboard side. g Glue a column into each of the holes, as in Step g on Page 263. h Remove two curved wooden strips from the sheet, as shown. 267
28 i Smooth the strips and then mark the edges with a black pen. j Test-fit the strips in place on top of the columns, make any adjustments to the fit, and then glue into place. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 268

Drill eight holes along the wooden strip, spaced 10 mm apart. 10 mm b Glue a column into each of the holes in the wooden strip. 269
30 c Cut a 195-mm length of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip and glue it along the bulwark of the quarterdeck and the columns that you just fitted. d When gluing the wooden strip to the columns, you will need to hold it in place until the glue dries. e Cut a length of wooden strip to fit between the two strips, as shown. Repeat Steps a-e for the starboard side of the ship. 270
31 f Glue another two gun ports between the stern castle supports, as before. g Glue two more gun ports on the bow bulkhead. h Cut five 8-mm lengths of 3 mm dowel. Glue one of the lengths in the center of the foredeck on top of the bow bulkhead, then on a column on either side it, followed by another length of dowel and another column. Continue around the tops of the latrines, fitting a column, a dowel, a column and then a final column, as shown. 271
32 i After smoothing and marking its edges with black, glue this shaped strip on top of the columns and dowels from the last step, as well as the bulwarks on either side. j Glue two lengths of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip onto the bulwarks, aft of the strip from the last step. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 272
33 Your parts Chainwales Wooden strip 2 x 7 x 300 mm Wooden strip 2 x 2 x 300 mm Tools and equipment Superglue Knife Sandpaper a Remove two of the larger frames from the sheet previously supplied, as shown. b Glue the wider end of one of the frames above the middle wooden strip at the bow and along the bottoms of the beakhead bulkheads. 273
34 c Cut lengths of 2 x 3 mm wooden strip to fit at the points shown in the photo. d Using a knife, make sure that the underside of the wooden strip is flat, as shown. e Glue the wide end of the other frame to the underside of the wooden strip. 274
35 f Glue the frame to each of the wooden strips from Step c, so it is in line with the other wooden strip. Repeat Steps a-f for the other side of the beak. g Remove all the chainwales from the sheet and smooth with sandpaper. Then cut two lengths of the 2 x 2 mm wooden strip to fit the two edges shown in the photo. Glue into place. h When the glue has dried, sand over the chainwales and the wooden strips so that they are the same width. 275
36 i Continue to sand the chainwales, rounding the corners of the wooden strips slightly. j Repeat Steps g-i for the remaining chainwales, then, when they are complete, stain them. The chainwales will be fitted at a later stage. To identify them, position as shown. Those on the left in the photo will be alongside the foremast; those in the middle alongside the mainmast; and on the right next to the mizzenmast. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 276
37 Your parts Double columns Wooden strips 4 x 4 x 300 mm Columns Tools and equipment Knife Superglue Ruler Drill/bit Tweezers Pencil a 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm 10 mm Cut a piece of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip to fit at the point arrowed, and glue into place. Then measure ten points from the wooden strip, 10 mm apart. Drill a shallow hole at each point and then glue in a column into each one. b Cut a 195-mm length of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip. Glue it into place on top of the bulwark and the wooden strip and the columns that you fitted in the previous step. 277
38 c Cut a length of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip to fit at the point arrowed, between the two longer strips. Repeat Steps a-c for the other side of the hull. d Cut two small pieces of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip to fit vertically, then cut two longer pieces to fit horizontally, finishing at the stern. e Hold one of the gun port rings over the first circular gun port from the bow. Mark either side of the ring on the wooden strip behind it. Then cut away the wooden strip between the two lines. 278
39 f Repeat the process in the last step for the rest of the circular gun ports, on both sides of the ship. g Remove the small support frames from the sheet. Sand to remove any roughness. h Locate the wooden strip between the two gun ports, highlighted by the arrows. Glue two of the support frames underneath the strip, one at each end. Then, using the photo as a guide for the placement, glue the mizzen chainwale to the undersides of the frames. 279
40 i Hold the main chainwale as shown in the photograph, above the middle strip of wood. Glue the first support in place, aligned with the gun port below the wale. Glue another three supports aft of the first, with roughly the same distance between them. Repeat on the other side of the hull. j Now position the fore chainwale, resting above the middle strip of wood and with the front aligned with the first gun port, as shown, and glue into place. Then glue three supports to the wale and the hull, with each one placed a little aft of a main deck gun port. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 280
41 Doors Bell Columns Belfry base Your parts Tools and equipment Tweezers Superglue Knife Ruler Sandpaper a Glue the belfry base to the main deck below the hatch of the foredeck, as indicated by the arrow. Then glue two double columns in front of the base, so only half of each one is visible from above, as shown. b Cut a length of 2 x 4 mm wooden strip to fit across the tops of the double columns, as shown. Round the bottom corners slightly and then glue into place. 281
42 c Insert a pin into the hole of the bell, pointed end upward. Then carefully glue the upper part of the pin onto the inside of the aft of the hatch frame, with the bell hanging below the hatch. d Glue two of the doors against the bulkhead, aligning them with the centers of the gratings above. e Glue the remaining two doors under the latrines. 282
43 f 6 mm Cut four 12-mm lengths of 2 x 4 mm wooden strip and sand one corner of each to an angle. Glue in front of the hatch on the main deck with 6 mm between them. Then cut two 12-mm lengths of 2 x 2 mm wooden strip and glue them onto the 2 x 4 mm lengths, as shown. g 30 mm Glue two double columns to the main deck, each one 30 mm from the center line of the quarterdeck and positioned just in front of the deck. Then cut a length of 4 x 4 mm wooden strip to fit on top of the columns, against the edge of the quarterdeck. h Cut two 60-mm lengths of 4 x 4 mm wooden strip. Glue two more double columns in place on the main deck as shown, in line with the two from the last step. Then glue the two 60-mm lengths of wood onto these columns. 283
44 i Glue two more double columns to the main deck as shown, in front of the 4 x 4-mm lengths of wood. j Cut another piece of the 4 x 4 mm strip and glue it on top of the columns, in contact with the two lengths from Step h and the bulwarks. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. 46 c Prepare the second shaped frame by coloring the edges black and staining as before, then glue it onto the lengths of dowel on top of the first shaped frame. d Cut two lengths of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip to fit the length of the foredeck bulwarks, and glue them to the columns from Step b. e Cut and glue two lengths of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip to fit below the strips glued in the previous step, as shown. 286
47 f 2 mm To make a set of pinrails, first take a length of 4 x 4 mm wooden strip and mark it at 2 mm and 4 mm from one end. Carve the space in between the two points into a V shape on all four sides. g Finish and smooth the groove with the corner of a file. h Cut the shaped strip of wood to a length of 15 mm. Repeat the previous two steps so that you have four 15 mm lengths. Then cut two 20 mm lengths of 2 x 4 mm wooden strip, and glue each one between two of the shaped lengths to create a pinrail, as shown in the photograph. 20 mm 287
48 i Glue the pinrails in place, one each side of the foremast hole. Then cut a length of 2 x 4 mm wooden strip to fit on the bow side of the pinrails, and mark it where the upright parts of the rails come into contact with it. Cut a small notch at each of these points so the strip fits onto the uprights, and glue it into place. j Stain the pinrail assembly. Drill four 1.5 mm holes into each of the horizontal parts of the pinrails, then glue a pin into each of the holes. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage.
