Pack 3 Your parts Bulwarks Gun port covers x 2 Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper Brushes Wood stain Hammer Pin pusher/nails Razor saw a Remove the longer bulwark and test-fit it in place at the bow of the hull, lining up the joins on Frame 8. b Apply glue to the contact areas, position the bulwark carefully and begin to nail it in place, starting at Frame 8 and continuing toward the bow. 97
c The end of the bulwark should finish at Frame 2. Nail it into place. d Now begin to fit the shorter bulwark from Frame 8, continuing back aft. As there is a compound curve here, before you start you may want to soak the aft end of the bulwark so that it is easier to shape. Then apply glue to the contact areas and begin nailing into place. e This bulwark should end at Frame 13. Nail into place. 98
f Glue the gun port lids to the insides of the bulwarks to cover the gun ports. g Retrieve the grating that you assembled previously and trim it to a 43 x 43-mm square. 43 mm 43 mm h Cut the 2 x 7-mm strip to fit two sides of the grating as shown. Glue into place with the strips flush with the underside of the grating and projecting above the top. 99
i Sand the bare sides so that they are in line with the wooden strips at the end. j Cut a further two lengths of wooden strip and glue to the bare sides of the grating. Make sure that these lengths are at the same height as the lengths in Step h. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 100
Bulwarks Gun port covers Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper File Hammer Kitchen scourer/steel wool Pin pusher/nails Clear varnish Knife a Remove the longer bulwark and test-fit it in place at the bow of the hull, lining up the joins on Frame 8. b Apply glue to the contact areas, position the bulwark and begin to nail in place. Start from Frame 8 and continue toward the bow. 101
c The end of the bulwark should finish at Frame 2. Nail it into place. d Now begin fitting the shorter bulwark from Frame 8, continuing back aft. As there is a compound curve here, before you start you may want to soak the aft end of the bulwark so that it is easier to shape. Apply glue to the contact areas and begin nailing into place. e This bulwark should end at Frame 13. Nail into place. 102
f Glue the gun port covers to the insides of the bulwarks to cover the gun port holes. g Once all the glue has dried, go over the hull, hammering the nails so that the tops of the heads are flush with the outer surfaces of the bulwarks. h Cut out the small rectangular doorways on either side of the hull. 103
i Sand the deck lightly to smooth the surface, then paint the deck with a clear varnish. j Once the varnish is dry, lightly use a rough item such as a kitchen scourer or steel wool to remove some of the shine. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 104
Planks 2 x 5 mm Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper Pin pusher/nails Knife a Take a plank and place it halfway across Frame 6. Test-fit it along the edge of the false keel as shown. Make any adjustments necessary so that it is flush with the height of the keel. b To get the position of the first plank correct, use this photo as reference. 105
c Soak the plank to increase its flexibility, then apply glue to the areas marked with red dotted lines. d Fit the plank, starting from halfway across Frame 6 and nailing it to each frame as you go. At Frame 2, bend it slightly so that it crosses over the false keel. e Once the glue has dried, cut away the area of the plank that overlaps the false keel. 106
f Place the next plank to the side of the false keel, starting from halfway across Frame 6 and ending halfway across Frame 10. g Glue the plank into place and nail it to Frames h Starting from halfway across Frame 10, fit another plank, covering the bottoms of Frames Glue and nail into place. Remove the excess, leaving about 5 mm extending past the stern. 107
i Starting from Frame 9, glue and nail another plank into place, again running just past the stern. j Glue and nail another plank to run from Frame 9 to Frame 6. Then another plank from Frame 6 to the bow, cutting any area that overlaps the false keel once dry. Repeat Steps a-j for the port side of the hull. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 108
Deck stairs Cannon sets x 3 Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper Brushes Wood stain Hammer Pin pusher/nails Red and black paint a Glue and nail a plank from Frame 5 to the bow. When the glue is dry, remove any of the plank that overlaps the false keel. b Continuing toward the stern, glue and nail another plank to fit from Frame 5 to Frame
c Fit another plank from Frame 8, running just past Frame 13, as shown. d Glue and nail into place a plank to fit from Frame 6 to past the bow, cutting off any excess that overlaps the false keel. e Now, fit two planks, one from Frame 6 to Frame 10 and another from Frame 10 aft, extending past the stern. 110
f Remove all the components of the deck stairs from this pre-cut sheet of wood. g Smooth the pieces, apply glue and assemble in order with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top, carefully aligning the back edges as you go. h Once dry, stain the stair assemblies. 111
i Glue the stairs on the main deck, as shown in the photo. j Assemble the three cannon sets, as you did with the previous ones. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 112
Planks 2 x 5 mm Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper Pin pusher/nails Knife a Take a plank and place it halfway across Frame 5. Glue and nail it into place up against the next plank. Once the glue has dried, cut away the area of the plank that overlaps the false keel. b Glue and nail another plank from Frame 5 to Frame
c Once the last plank has dried in place, glue and nail another from Frame 8 to past Frame 13. Repeat Steps a-c for the other side of the hull. d For now, don t worry about any gaps between the planks at the stern, as they will be fixed at a later stage. e Glue and nail two more lengths of plank, one running from Frame 4 to Frame 7 and another from Frame 7 to Frame
f Glue and nail a plank from Frame 6 to the bow. A wedgeshaped gap will appear, which will be filled later. g Continuing aft of the plank fitted in the last step, glue and nail another into place, from Frame 6 to Frame 8. h Glue and nail another plank from Frame 8 to Frame 13. As with Step f, this will create a wedge-shaped gap. 115
i Shape a plank to fit from Frame 5 to Frame 7, then glue and nail it into place. j Now glue and nail another plank to the hull, this time to fit from Frame 6 to the bow. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 116
Your parts Cannon set x 2 Gratings Wooden strips 2 x 2 x 150 mm x 2 Tools and equipment Superglue Knife Tweezers Brushes Wood stain Red and black paint a Using the photo as a guide, assemble the gratings, interlocking the slots as shown. b Apply glue to all the joints so that the grating becomes one single piece. 117
11 mm 18 mm 18 mm c Cut three squares from the grating: two that are 11 x 18 mm and one that is 18 x 23mm. 11 mm 18 mm 23 mm d Glue the 18 x 23 mm grating into the larger hatch on the main deck at the bow. e Cut a length of 2 x 7 mm wooden strip to fit in the center of the hatch, next to the grating you fitted in the last step. 118
f Glue one of the assembled ladders into the gap in the hatch. g Using the photograph as reference, cut and glue lengths of the 2 x 2-mm wooden strips to fit around the sides of the 11 x 18-mm gratings. h Sand the gratings and lengths of wood until they are smooth, and stain the wooden strips. 119
i Lightly stain the ladder glued in the hatch. j Assemble the two guns and finish them as before. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 120
Planks 2 x 5 mm Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper Pin pusher/nails Knife a Continuing on from Page 116, glue and nail a plank to fit from Frame 7 to Frame 11. b Glue and nail another plank to fit from Frame 11 to Frame
c Glue and nail a plank to fit next to the plank fitted in Step j, Page 116, to run from Frame 6 to Frame 8. d Glue and nail a plank into place from Frame 8 to Frame 13. e Glue and nail two planks to the bulwark, with one running from Frame 9 aft and another from Frame 10 aft. 122
f Use a knife to remove any parts of the planks that block the gun port openings. g Continue to fix planks to the bulwark at the stern. One should run from Frame 11 aft, another from Frame 12 aft. Remember to remove any part of the planking that covers the gun port holes. h Continue adding planks along the bulwark, moving toward the bow. Remember to cut away the planks that cover the gun ports. 123
i Cut away the areas of the planks fitted in the last step that cover the gun ports. Repeat Steps e-i for the port side bulwarks. j Once the planks have dried, cut away any parts that extend past Frame 1, so that they are all aligned with the frame. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 124
Deck stairs Nails Cannon set x 2 Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Superglue Knife Tweezers Brushes Wood stain Red and black paint a Remove all the components of the deck stairs from this sheet of wood. b Smooth the pieces, apply glue and assemble in order, with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top, carefully aligning the back edges as you go. 125
c When the glue is dry, stain the stair assemblies. d Glue the stairs on the main deck at the bow, as shown in the photo, placed in contact with the bulwarks and upper deck. e Glue the two sections of grating from Page 119 on the main deck, as shown. 126
f Cut a 20-mm length of 2 x 2-mm wooden strip. Glue it into place as shown, running from the grating and along the edge of the hatch. g Cut another length of 2 x 2-mm strip to fit along the open side of the hatch and glue it into place. Then repeat Steps f and g to add strips to the other grating and the other side of the hatch. h This should be how the gratings and hatch appear. 127
i Fit a ladder inside the hatch, glued to the lower deck. j Assemble and finish the two gun kits as you did with the previous ones. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 128
Planks 2 x 5 mm Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper Pin pusher/nails Knife a Add more planks to the bulwarks, continuing up from Page 123, as shown. Add nails where you can. If you can t use nails, use a quick-setting glue such as superglue. b Continue to add planks, stopping just before you cover the gun ports. 129
c Carefully cut out the shape of the gun ports in the planks so they do not get lost when the rest of the planks are added. d Continue to plank the rest of the stern bulwark. e Cut away any planks covering the gun ports. You may have to cut them from inside the bulwarks as well as outside. Repeat Steps a-e for the other side of the hull. 130
f Continue forward, adding planks to cover the bow bulwark. Repeat for the other side of the hull. g If necessary, cover any small protruding areas of the bulwarks with short bits of plank. h Carefully carve down any protruding planks so that they are in line with the tops of the bulwarks. 131
i Sand the tops of the bulwarks and planks so they are perfectly level and smooth. j Cut away the planks covering the gun ports in the bow bulwarks. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 132
Your parts Skylight sheet Acetate sheet Wooden strips 2 x 2 mm, 150 mm long Cannon set x 2 Tools and equipment Superglue Sandpaper Knife Tweezers Brushes Wood stain/varnish Red and black paint Pin pusher/nails a A C C Mark the different parts on the sheet, as shown. This will help you when assembling the skylight. B A B D b A C B Using a quick-setting glue, assemble the skylight, as shown in the photo. B A 133
c Once the skylight assembly is dry, smooth the surface with sandpaper. d Glue the roof of the skylight (D) to one side of the skylight assembly, then roll the assembly so that the roof is glued over the curved shape. You may want to soak the roof first to make it more pliable. e Use 2 x 2-mm wooden strips to add framing to the skylight assembly, as shown. 134
f To achieve an even finish, coat with wood stain or varnish. g Add short lengths of plank to fill in the larger gaps at the stern, using nails and glue as before. h Trim pieces of plank to fill in any remaining gaps between the planks at the stern, and also cover any protruding part of the keel. 135
i Once the glue is dry, cut away the excess planking and smooth the edges of the planks so that they are in line with the false keel. j Assemble and finish the two guns as you did previously. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 136
Planks 2 x 5 mm Your parts Tools and equipment Wood glue Sandpaper Pin pusher/nails Knife a Cut a length of plank to fit on its side, from the middle of Frame 6 to the middle of Frame 8. Glue into place. b Shape a plank to fit in the gap at the bow, as shown. Nail and glue into place, with the free end running aft. 137
c Continue to nail the plank to the frames, with it finishing at Frame 6 next to the plank on its side from Step a. d Glue and nail into place a further two planks, one running from Frame 6 to Frame 10, and another from Frame 10 aft. e Glue and nail another plank to fit from the bow to Frame
f Continue to plank the hull, fitting two more planks, one running from Frame 5 to Frame 8 and another from Frame 8 to Frame 13. g You can apply a coat of glue to the inside of the planks for added strength. h Place a further three sets of planks on each side of the hull, alternating the order so that one row runs bow-6, 6-10, 10-14, and the next row runs from bow-5, 5-8,
i As can be seen, the joints in the planks alternate between Frames 5 and 6. j Note how the planks are arranged at the stern of the hull. k The photo shows how the assembly should look at this stage. Keep any leftover material, as it will be used later. 140
Deck stairs Nails Cannon set x 2 Your parts Tools and equipment Superglue Sandpaper Wood glue Knife Tweezers Brushes Wood stain Red and black paint a Lightly roughen the surface of the acetate sheet with sandpaper on both sides. b Measure and cut three strips of the acetate sheet to fit in the three compartments of the skylight. 141
