oll-way Patio hair Project Plan FO YOU STT This project, designed for the Kreg Jig H and Kreg Jig H Screws, uses 1 ½"-thick material, commonly called 2- by lumber. We recommend cedar for outdoor projects, but if you will be using your chair in a sheltered location, standard pine lumber will work. In either case, plan to finish the chair with an exterior-grade paint or stain. When purchasing your lumber, you may want to include an extra 2x4 to allow for cutting around unacceptable knots and other defects. It is important for all like parts to be exactly the same length, so use a fence extension and stop block with your miter saw when making the cuts.
oll-way Patio hair SI SSMLIS TIP: onsider routing or sanding ⅛" roundovers on the cut ends of all 1. From 2x4 and 2x6 stock, use a miter saw to cut the rails the parts. This gives you a finished (), legs (), and uprights () to the sizes shown on the look where a cut end abuts the Parts List. ut the 3" chamfer on the top rear corner of rounded factory edge of another each rail, the 13-degree angle on the bottom end of each part, and eliminates sharp edges leg, and the 5-degree angle on the bottom end of each at exposed ends. upright. Then drill a ½" hole for the axle in each rail (), where dimensioned. Finish-sand the parts. 2. Using your Kreg Jig H, drill pocket holes in the inside faces of the rails (), where dimensioned. There is a right-hand and a left-hand rail, so make sure they are mirror images of each other. When drilling pocket holes in the rails for attaching the legs (), you ll drill the first hole and then reposition your jig for the second hole. For the pocket holes in the rail for attaching the upright (), simply center your jig where dimensioned and drill both pocket holes. 3. On a flat surface, position one rail () against one leg (), where dimensioned, clamp the parts, and drive the pocket screws. Position an upright () against the rail, where dimensioned, clamp, and drive the pocket screws. epeat with the remaining rail, leg, and upright.
oll-way Patio hair TH SLTS 4. From 2x4 and 2x6 stock, cut the wide slats () and narrow slats () to length. rill the pocket holes. When drilling pocket holes in the wide slats (), you ll drill the first hole and reposition your jig to drill the second hole. For the narrow slats (), center your jig on the part and drill both pocket holes. Finish-sand the parts. 5. Place one side assembly (//), inside face up, on a flat surface and clamp the seat wide slat () in place. rive the pocket screws. Then clamp and pocket screw the three seat narrow slats () in place, leaving ⅞" spaces, as shown. In similar fashion, clamp and pocket screw the back wide slat and the five back narrow slats in place. Finally, add the narrow slat at the front below the seat wide slat. TIP: To keep the top face of the seat wide slat () flush with the top edge of the rail (), clamp a piece of 2x4 to the leg (), position the wide slat against the 2x4, and drive the pocket screws. To keep the seat narrow slats () flush with the top edge of the rail, clamp a piece of 2x4 face-to-edge against the rail, position the slats against the 2x4, and drive the pocket screws. epeat this procedure to keep the back slats flush with the front edge of the upright.
oll-way Patio hair 6. Place the second side assembly on a flat surface, inside face up, and position the side/slats assembly on it. Starting with the wide slats (), align the slats with the second assembly rail and upright and pocket screw the slats in place. F F TH MS 7. From 2x4 stock, cut the arms (F) to size. rill pocket holes where dimensioned. lamp an arm to one leg () and upright () with the front end of the arm protruding 2 beyond the leg and the arm parallel to the rail (). rive the pocket screws.
oll-way Patio hair FINISHING N FINL SSMLY 8. xamine the chair and finish-sand, where needed. pply your choice of exterior stain or paint, following the manufacturer s instructions. 9. With the finish dry, drive an axle cap onto one end of a 36 piece of ½ steel rod. To prevent damage to the cap, use a soft mallet or cushion the blows of a hammer with a piece of 2x4. Slide an 8 offset-hub wheel onto the rod so the protruding side of the hub will face the rail (). Then slide two ½ washers onto the rod. Slide the rod through the holes in the rails, place two more washers and the second wheel onto the rod. llowing enough length for the second axle cap plus 1/8, mark the finished length on the rod. emove the second wheel and washers, and use a hacksaw to cut the rod to length. File the cut end smooth. Now replace the washers and wheel and drive on the second axle cap. 10. Place the chair on your deck or patio. The wheels make it easy to move the chair around to catch sun or shade and to roll it into storage. For increased comfort, you can fit your chair with a standard 22 -wide outdoor-chair cushion, available at home centers.
