STAGE: 7 Gun port lids, wooden strips and guns. Gun port lids. x x 00mm ramin strip. Carriage. Cannon C. Cannon wedge 6. Dummy guns 7. x x 00mm ramin strip 7C Paint the piece white and then glue it in place. Repeat this process forward, preparing and fitting pieces of strip between the gun deck gun ports. When you reach the bow, look at the following step before proceeding. 7 7D At the bow, you will need to create two lengths to fit, as shown below: one mm long, leaving a mm gap forward of it, then another length to the stem. Glue them in place, then repeat the process on the other side of the hull. D 6 mm A 7B The length of the piece 7A Retrieve the x x 00mm ramin strips supplied with Stage, and smooth them with sandpaper. Cut a length from one of the strips to fit between the two gun ports shown in the next step. mm E B of strip should fit between the two aftmost gun deck gun ports, as shown. 7E Take the rudder and hold it up against the stern post, as shown. Mark a line on the rudder where the black section of the hull intersects it. Paint the top section of the rudder, above the marked line, black. 7
7F Cut five 6mm lengths of the F.mm brass rod supplied with Stage 7. 6mm 7G Glue the lengths of brass wire into the hinges on the rudder, as shown. G H 7I Hold the rudder in position at the stern. Place the free hinges onto the hull, and drill holes into the hull through those in the hinges, as shown. You may find it easier to mark where the holes are first, take the rudder away, drill the holes, then replace the rudder and hinges. When you have drilled the holes, fit a nail into each one to secure the hinges. I J 7J Here is how the rudder and hinges should look once in position. 7H Now take the five K hinges supplied with Stage 6, and hook them over the hinge pins fitted in the previous step. 7K This stage is now complete. Store any materials that you haven t used, because they will be needed in future stages. 8
STAGE: 7 Gun port lids, wooden strip and guns. Gun port lids. x x 00mm walnut strip. Carriage C. Cannon. Cannon wedge 6. Dummy guns 7C Now glue the wedges between the cannon and the carriage. Assemble the second cannon in the same way. D 6 A 7A Prepare the cannon parts from the previous stage and those from this stage. Paint the carriages and wedges red, and the wheels black, as shown. 7D Here you can see how the guns will fit on the deck. The barrels must always be centred in the ports. E B 7B Glue the trunnions of the cannon into the semicircular notches in the carriage. 7E Remove three pairs of gun port lids from the fret. 9
F 7H Take a x x 00mm H ramin strip and cut it to fit along the bottom edge of the transom. Paint the strip white, then glue it in place. 7F Sand the gun port I 7I Cut another length of x lids smooth, and paint them black. mm G J x 00mm ramin strip to fit mm above the first, and paint it white. Glue the strip in place. 7J Remove the detailing from the fret received with Stage 6, sand it smooth and paint it white. When the paint is dry, glue the detailing to the transom, from the second strip (Step I) to the edge of the three ports (arrowed). 7G Glue the three pairs to K the transom, positioned so the bottom edge of the lower lids sits 6mm above the bottom edge of the transom. You may find it easier to do this after looking at the following steps. 7K This stage is now complete. Store any materials that you haven t used, because they will be needed in future stages. 60
STAGE: 7 Gun port lids, guns and brass wire. Gun port lids. Carriage base. Carriage. Cannon C. Cannon wedge 6. Dummy guns 7. mm brass wire 7C Drill seven mm holes around the starboard midships ladder, at the points shown. Make sure that they are around mm deep D Place the U-shaped frame over the ladder, gluing the ends into the holes (arrowed). Then begin gluing the other frames into the other holes. D A 7A Take the brass wire and straighten it out, using a wooden block, then smooth its surface with a rough sponge. E 7 7B Cut five 6mm lengths B 0mm of brass wire and one 6mm length, to make into frames. Bend the five 6mm pieces to a curved right angle, and the 6mm length to a U-shape, as shown. mm 7mm 6 7E Once all the frames are in place, make sure the ends all join at the centre of the U-shaped frame and then apply glue to them, as shown.
7F Now cut six lengths of brass wire to fit around F three sides of the framework, the first 7mm above the grating base and the second mm above that. Glue them into place. 7I Glue the trunnions of the 7mm 7G Combine the two parts of the carriage in mm the same way as those before. G cannon onto the recesses in the sides of the carriages. Make sure the breach ring is uppermost. I H J 7J Glue the wedge between the cannon and the carriage. 7H Paint the carriage and K 7K This stage is now complete. wedge, using the same red as before. Store any materials that you haven t used, because they will be needed in future stages. 6
STAGE: 7 Wooden strips and fittings. Parts fret. Columns. x x 00mm ramin strip C. x x 00mm ramin strip. Pins 6. mm deadeyes 7C Glue the smaller collar onto the larger, 6 making sure that the holes are aligned. Paint the assembly with wood stain when dry. 7D When the stain is dry, glue the mast collar A over the mizzenmast hole. The rectangular section of the collar should be pointing aft, centrally aligned with the deck, as shown. D 7A Remove the two mast collars from the parts fret. E B 7B Smooth the two parts 8mm mmm m 6mm mmm m 6mm mm mm with sandpaper and then stain the edges. 7E Now you will begin making the mizzenmast fife rail. Take the x x 00mm ramin strip and drill nine holes, with a.mm bit, at the points shown in the photo. 6
7F Cut through the strip 8mm F 7G Smooth the fife rail, and then round the ends using a file or sanding block. G I after the last hole. 8mm 7I Glue the four columns onto the four pieces cut in the previous step. 7J Glue the four columns onto the gaps in the fife rail, as shown, making sure they do not obstruct the holes in the rail. H J 6mm 7H Cut four 6mm lengths K 7K This stage is now complete. from the x x 00mm ramin strip. Store any materials that you haven t used, because they will be needed in future stages. 6
STAGE: 7 Gun port lids, guns and blocks Cannon wedge 6. Dummy guns 7. Blocks m 7m. Gun port lids. Carriage base. Carriage. Cannon C 7C Glue the two rails to the fife rail from the previous stage, 7mm in from the ends, with the curved ends facing out from the centre, as shown D Take the x x 00mm ramin strip from the previous stage and cut a mm length from it. File a mm-wide, mm-deep recess across the width of the strip, mm from one end. This measurement may differ slightly on your model, in regards to the height of the rails (see Step H). mm D A 7A Retrieve the x x 00mm ramin strip from the previous stage and cut two mm lengths from it. Drill seven.mm holes in each at the points indicated. 9mm mm mm mm mm mm mm mm 7B Round off one corner of mm mm mm E 7mm B each piece at the end with the 9mm space. 7E Cut a 7mm length of the brass wire from Stage 7. Drill a hole through the top of the post and glue the wire into the hole, projecting evenly from either side. 6
7F Create a groove on either H side of the post, mm long, starting 6mm from the bottom. 7H Test-fit the posts on the inside of the fife rails, as shown. If the rails don t fit, or the posts don t sit properly on the surface they re resting on, adjust the fit and then glue into place. F I 7I Stain the assembled fife rail the same colour as the other parts. Then paint the tops of the posts white. mm 6mm G 7G Drill a mm hole through the post, at the top and bottom of the mm groove. Repeat Steps D G to make a second post. J 7J Glue the mizzenmast fife rail to the deck, centred over the mizzenmast collar. K 7K This stage is now complete. Store any materials that you haven t used, because they will be needed in future stages. 66
