3 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Landing gear housing 2 - Housing part Housing part Landing gear housing plate You will need Spray can Knife Ruler Sandpaper File Glue Awl Hammer String 1 2 Place upper wing plate 5 onto the template (both from Stage 56) to verify it is the correct plate. Shape the plate over a spray can to fit the section on the wing shown in Step

4 3 4 Test-fit the plate in place on the wing, up against plate 3. Cut away the excess of the plate if necessary. 5 6 Smooth the edges of the plate with sandpaper or a file. Apply glue to the areas of the wing that will be in contact with the plate and then glue it into place. 213

5 7 8 Check that the back edges of the plates are aligned with the spar. Use the awl to pierce holes in the corners at the rear of the plate. 9 To make holes at the front of the plate use a piece of string, aligned with the ribs to mark where the ribs would appear underneath the plate. Use the awl to make a hole in the two corners and the marks aligned with the ribs. 214

6 10 Hammer a nail into each of the holes. 11 The wing should now look like this. Keep any unused parts to the side. 215

7 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Upper wing plate Upper wing plate Upper wing plate Template sheet You will need Spray can Knife Ruler Glue Awl Hammer 1 2 Use the template sheet to identify upper wing plate 7 (Stage 56). Test-fit plate 7 in position, up against plate

8 3 4 Prepare plate 7 in the same way as the previous plates, cutting it to size, if necessary, and shaping with a spray can. Apply glue to the parts of the wing that will be in contact with the plate. 5 6 Glue the plate into position, aligned with the leading edge and the spar. Use the awl to make a hole in the four corners and along the front, aligned with the ribs. 217

9 7 8 Gently hammer a nail into each of the holes in plate 7. 9 Identify plate 9 by placing it on the template (Stage 58). 10 Prepare plate 9 in the same way as the previous plates and then glue into place up against plate Make a hole in each of the corners of plate 9 and then lightly hammer a nail into them. The wing should now look like this. Keep any unused parts to the side. 218

10 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Leading edge Leading edge Leading edge Nails You will need Glue Sponge Awl Hammer Test-fit leading edge 3 against the front of the wing (dotted lines). Make any adjustments needed and then glue into place. 219 Hold in place as the glue dries to ensure the part doesn t move.

11 Test-fit and glue leading edge 2 into place, up against leading edge 3. Test-fit and glue leading edge 1 to the front of the wing, up against edge The leading edges and trailing edge are now all attached to the right half of the wing. Carefully work along the edges with a sponge to polish and smooth them. You can also do this for the plates. 220

12 7 8 9 Identify plate 11 on the template sheet (Stage 56). Test-fit, prepare and glue plate 11 to the wing, up against plate Carefully make a hole in each corner of the plate. 11 Gently hammer a nail into each of the four holes created in the previous step. The wing should now look like this. Keep any unused parts to the side. 221

13 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Landing gear housing parts fret 2 - Landing gear housing plate 3 - Landing gear pivot axis Landing gear pivot axis 2 You will need Pen Ruler Rivet marker Sandpaper Glue Awl Hammer 1 2 Take wing plate 12 and lay it on the corresponding part of the template (both from Stage 58). Turn the plate over and mark the inner lines on the template onto it (dotted lines). 222

14 3 4 Hold a ruler along the marked line and then roll along it with the rivet marker. Repeat this process for the other lines on the plate. 5 6 Sand the side of the plate that will be stuck to the wing (see the next step). Place the plate at the end of the wing, as shown. Shape the plate and file the edges, if necessary. 223

15 7 8 Remove the plate and apply glue to the areas of contact (dotted lines). Then, place the plate back into position. 9 Once the plate has dried in place, pierce a hole into each corner of it with an awl. 10 Gently hammer a nail into the holes in the corners. 11 Check that the plate looks like the one shown in the photo above. The wings should now look like this. Keep any unused parts to the side for later use. 224

16 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Parts fret 2 - Captive nuts 3 - Nuts M2 4-2 x 20mm screws 5-2 x 12mm screw You will need Knife Sandpaper Glue Saw File Remove the parts from the fret received with Stage 64. Smooth the edges with sandpaper. Position the base of the landing gear housing as shown, and then place the projections of the side piece into the notches of the base. 225

17 3 4 Glue the first side in place, and then apply glue to the other side of the base (dotted lines). Glue the second side in place. It is important that the two sides are at right angles to the base. 5 6 Remove any burrs or flash from the landing gear pivot axes from Stage 64. Test-fit in position in the landing gear housing. Locate the two ribs in the wing with the cutouts shown. Then, cut away the bottom of the ribs, underneath the cutouts, along the dotted lines. 226

18 7 8 Use a file to smooth the cut edges of the ribs. Look at the following steps before proceeding. Test-fit the landing gear housing in the underside of the wing, as shown. You will need to cut out a section of the side (dotted lines) so that it fits under the spar Remove the landing gear housing from the wing and apply glue to the contact points. Place the landing gear housing back into the wing and leave to set in position. The photo above shows how the landing gear housing should appear from the top of the wing. 227

19 11 The wing should now look like this. Keep any unused material to the side. 228

20 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Parts fret 2 - Parts fret 3-3 x 16mm screws You will need Knife Sandpaper Glue File Saw 1 2 Remove the three landing gear housing parts from the fret received with Stage 61 and sand the edges smooth. Glue the first side to the base, engaging the projections with the notches. Make sure it is positioned at a right angle. 229

21 3 4 File a section out of the front of the side of the housing, to fit under the spar of the wing (Step 9). Apply glue to the second side of the base. 5 6 Glue the second landing gear housing side piece to the side of the base. Test-fit the two pivot axes from Stage 61 in the landing gear housing, as shown. 230

22 7 8 Cut out the bottoms of the cutout sections of the ribs (dotted lines). 9 File smooth the cuts in the ribs. 10 Test-fit the landing gear housing into position in the underside of the wing. Then remove and apply glue to the contact points and place the housing back into position. 11 The two landing gear housings have now been fitted to the wing. The wing should now look like this. Keep any unused parts to the side. 231

23 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Parts fret 2-6.5mm screws 3 - Rod You will need Saw File Knife Sandpaper Glue Clamps 1 2 Remove the central section (dotted lines) of the bottom of the fuselage frame shown. File the cut edges of the frame. 232

24 3 4 1 Remove all of the parts from the fret received with this stage and sand the edges smooth. Test-fit the small piece with three holes behind the frame from Step 1. Make any adjustments necessary to make it fit and then glue into place, with the edge shown at the top flush with the bottom of the frame. 5 6 Apply glue to the surface of the end frame, as shown (dotted line). Combine the two parts of the fuselage, making sure that the joined frames are aligned. 233

25 7 8 Hold the two pieces together with clamps. Leave to the side until the glue has dried. Take the two remaining pieces from the fret and apply glue along the dotted lines, as shown Place the smaller piece onto the larger. The parts should be aligned centrally (dotted line). The photo and inset above show where the part assembled in the previous step will fit. 234

26 11 The fuselage should now look like this. Keep any unused parts to the side. 235

27 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Upper wing plate Upper wing plate Upper wing plate Upper wing plate Wing plate template You will need Saw File Knife Glue Hammer 1 2 Cut away the tops of the cutouts in the two ribs shown (dotted lines). 236 Cut away the top of the ribs on the other half of the wing. Then with a flat file, smooth the cut areas.

28 3 4 Remove the top of the cutout section of the central joined ribs (dotted lines), then smooth the cuts flat with a file. The central area of the wing should now look like this. 5 6 Remove the two parts from the fret that came with Stage 65. Then sand them smooth. Retrieve two of the captive nuts from Stage 65. Apply glue approximately 2mm around the hole in one of the parts from the previous step. 237

29 7 8 Place the part on a raised surface, so there is space behind the hole, and then lightly tap one of the captive nuts into the hole. 9 The nut should protrude through the other side of the part, as shown in the photo. 10 Apply glue around the nut to further secure it. 11 Repeat Steps 6-9 for the other piece removed in Step 5 and the second captive nut. They should be symmetrical, as shown. The wing should now look like this. Keep the assembled parts and any unused parts to the side for later use. 238

30 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Left wheel fairing 2 - Right wheel fairing 3 - Screws 6.5mm You will need Knife Sandpaper Glue File 1 2 Remove the parts from fret 1 from Stage 66 and then sand them smooth. 239 Test-fit the two smaller parts into the larger, looking at Step 3 to show you how. Then, apply glue to the larger part, where the two smaller parts will fit.

31 3 4 Fit the two smaller pieces into place, as shown. Once dry, turn the assembly over and file the projecting parts of the smaller pieces flush with the larger piece. 5 6 A A D A B B C C A Identify the parts shown in the photo on fret 2 from Stage 66. Remove parts A, B and C from the fret and sand smooth. Glue the two A parts together, aligning the edges and holes of both. 240

32 7 8 B A B B C In the same way as the A parts, glue the two C parts and two B parts together as well. 9 Test-fit the combined B parts into the cutouts of A, as shown. Carry out any adjustments necessary to make it fit, and then glue into place. 10 C Glue the C parts into A, opposite B, after making any adjustments to the fit. 11 When the assembly is dry, test-fit in place in the assembly from Step 4, as shown. Keep the assemblies and any unused parts to the side for later use. 241

33 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Suspension struts 2 - Suspension joints You will need Rivet marker Ruler Knife Glue Awl Hammer 1 2 Place wing plate 10 on the template sheet (both Stage 62) to confirm it is the correct plate. 242 Place plate 10 on the wing next to plate 12, flush with the edges of the surrounding plates and rear spar. Shape the edges to fit, if necessary.

34 3 4 Push the rivet marker along the lines shown above and on the template. Turn the plate over and lightly score along the lines to the side of the rivet marks indicated on the template and by the red lines shown above. 5 6 The plate should now look like this. Test-fit the plate in place again. Then, apply glue to the contact points on the wing. 243

35 7 8 Glue the plate in place. Then, pierce a hole in the plates at each point indicated in the photo. Lightly hammer a nail into all of the points indicated in the photo above. 9 Identify wing plate 8 against the template (both Stage 62). Test-fit in place on the wing, flush with the surrounding plates and the rear spar (dotted lines). Then, mark the rivets and lines, as shown on the template. 244

36 10 Glue the plate in place. Pierce a hole and lightly hammer a nail into the holes at each of the points shown. 11 The wing should now look like this. Keep any unused parts to the side. 245

37 Stage This stage s parts 1 - Suspension struts 2-5mm washers 3 - Engine wiring You will need Saw Cylinder Sandpaper Glue Wooden strip 1 2 Look through the steps of this stage before proceeding. Use a saw to cut out the bottoms of the cutouts in the ribs (dotted lines). Try and angle the edges so the cuts produce a roughly circular shape. Turn the wing over, and cut out the tops of the ribs, in roughly the same shape. 246

38 3 4 To create a cylindrical sanding block, take a cylinder or any object that has an approximate diameter of 55mm (2.2 inches) and wrap sandpaper around it. Insert the cylindrical sanding block into the hole created in Steps 1-2. Move it up and down to ensure this hole is circular. 5 6 Wrap the plate from Stage 61 around the same cylinder used for the sanding block, as shown. The plate won t hold its shape, but this is fine as long as it is curved. 247

39 7 Hold the plate in a circle and insert it into the hole in the wing. To see how the cutout section is aligned with the landing gear housing, see Step 9. 8 Apply glue to the contact point between the landing gear housing and the plate (dotted line). 248

40 9 10 This shows how the plate and the landing gear housing should look. Hold a wooden strip along the ribs above and below the plate to ensure it doesn t project above or below the ribs. The plate will be secured at a later stage. 11 The wing should now look like this. Store any unused parts for later use. 249
