1 TWS 5094 SCHWERE PLATTFORMWAGON TYPE SSY 60TON Congratulations on purchasing one of the finer aftermarket resin kits sets available. The photo below is of the completed kit. The Panther tank is not included with this kit. You will note that we have broken the build into several sub-assemblies. Please note each sub assembly will have it s own parts list as well as part numbers. So look over these instructions to get familiar with what will be involved in the construction of this kit. You will also need to have some additional supplies to complete this kit. You will need some 5 minuet epoxy, wood glue and several drill bits. The drill bit numbers will be called out on the respective sub assemble. We also recommend you have a set of track to aid in the truck assembly. Tank Workshop sells a three piece set of track TWS We can also recommend Trumpeter's German Railway Track set kit # We recommend washing the parts in warm soapy water or a commercially available mold release cleaner to remove any residual mold release agent. We also recommend leaving the parts on the casting blocks until called out for. Once the part is called out for dry fit to make sure the parts fit and align properly Assembly The first sub-assembly will be the frame of the car. Please reference the next page for the parts list and the assembly steps. We recommend you use a square to make sure the frame is perfectly square. You may use the provided wooden deck to make sure you fit the frame together squarely.

2 Frame Parts List 4x x x Frame Sub-Assembly 1. Use the below line drawings as a reference to the basic layout of the frame. Join parts 1 and together. Then join parts to one set of the side frame reference figure 1. Check to make sure parts are square to parts 1&. Once you have checked this then glue the second frame set to parts. You now can test fit the wood decking into the basic frame. The fit will be tight and there should be no gaps on the sides or ends. Next test fit parts 4 to the locating bars on the insides of parts 1&. Part 4 should drop right in without pushing the frame sides out. If this happens then you ll have 4 waves in your frame and the deck will have gaps. If you need to trim part 4 then note that you ll need to remove an equal amount from both sides so the truck locating pin remains centered in the car. For example if you need to remove a total of 4mm then you must remove mm from either side. See figure for the completed frame. 4 1& assembly

4 Truck Parts 8x8 6x16 5x8 7x16 9x8 4x8 x8 x8 11x 10x8 1x4 Not shown /16 plastic tube &.06 plastic rod Truck Sub-assembly 1. Begin by installing parts into the wheel axel support slots on parts 1. See figure 1 for reference. Note that the flanges on part will be on the back side of part 1. Next install part 5 to the lower end of the wheel bearing box support slot. It should cover part. See figure. Next install part 8 to the top of part 5. The spring support ends should be glued to the locating circles on part 1. Next install part 9 to the lower end of the bearing box.. Next you ll need to build the brake support assemblies using parts and 6. You ll need to drill out part 6 at the locating hole using a #5 drill bit. Next using the.06 rod as a jig you ll need to install two rod support arms onto the rod. NOTE THE ANGLE OF THE SUPPORTS. See figure. Using this jig then glue part 6 to the locating slots on part. You will need to do this 8 times.. Next build the axel using the /16 tubing. The length of the axel should be 5.8cm. Next measure 4mm from both ends. This is the portion of the axels that will go into the bearing boxes on the truck frames. Slide two each of part 4 onto the axel. Cone ends facing each other. Now slide the wheels (10) on. The wheel should be set to the 4mm line. See figure 4 4

6 Fig Next you will need to assemble the truck. We recommend slow setting super glue for this step. This is where a set of track becomes useful. Slide the axel/wheel assembly into the bearing boxes. Now set the assembly onto the rails and make sure it sits flat. If it sits flat disassemble and then glue the axels into the bearing boxes while holding the assembly on the track. Now install the brake support sub-assemblies to the ends of the truck frames. See figure 5. Once you are happy with the set of the truck on the rails and the entire assembly is square then go ahead and put some super glue accelerator on all the joints to speed up the slow setting super glue. Now install the two remaining brake support sub-assemblies into the slots on the truck frames. Some trimming may be necessary for these to slide into place. See figure Now it s time to install the brake pads and rods. Using the.06 rod cut 4.7cm lengths. Now slide into the support arms and glue the brake pads to the ends. The pads should sit away from the wheels or you can adjust them to be engaged with the wheel showing the brakes applied. Fig. 5 Note the truck assembly is being viewed from the bottom 6

8 Hitch/Bumper Assembly 1. Now we will assemble the bumpers and hitches to the car ends. Using figure 1 make the appropriate measurements and then glue the called out parts to the measurements. Before gluing part 1 to the car end you will need to drill out the top of the hook with a #60 drill bit at the locator holes. 10mm Fig. 1 5mm mm 9mm. Next you will need to drill out parts 6&11 using a #47 drill bit. This will allow the jack screw to slide into the blocks and the adjust handle to slide between the blocks. Now drill out parts 10,1 and the other side of part 6 using a #60 drill bit. I recommend you do the drilling with the parts still attached to the casting block. Now assemble the hitch assembly per figure..040 Rod 1 10 Fig Rod. Now install ea air valves to the car ends between part 1 and 1. Next using some tubing install part 5 on the end and install into one of the air control valves. Using another piece of tubing install part 7 and install into the other valve. See figure. 8

10 Final Assembly Now for final assembly. First you will need to glue the upper and lower decks together using a wood glue or epoxy. Note the alignment of the bolt holes. The lower deck hole should be close to the center of the upper deck hole. I recommend using a flat weight to aid in the two pieces of decking to dry flat together. NOTE: THE WOOD DECK MAY WARP IF NOT WEIGHTED WHILE DRYING. At this time you can stain your deck if that is your desired finish. After the decks are dry install them into the car frames using a 5 minuet epoxy. I can t recommend super glue as a bonding agent as I did not try this. So if using super glue use at your own risk. Once the decking is secure you can install the trucks to the mounts on the frame. There should be an air tank installed along the centerline of the lower deck between the two truck assemblies. Use epoxy to attach this. Final step would be to install the rivets/bolts in the recessed bolt holes in the deck. You can either trim the rivets/bolts to sit flush in the deck or you can drill out the lower deck holes using a #6 drill bit. By doing this you can just cut the rivet off of it s tree and slide it in the hole. No trimming required. Rivets/Bolts installed If you reference the hitch/bumper parts list you will note parts 15 and 16. Part 16 can be installed on the deck as guides to keep the loaded tank centered on the deck. These are optional. Part 15 are wooden chocks used to chock the tank once on the deck. 10

11 Decals & Painting Use the below figure to locate the decals. Note if you are building the Panther car please reference the notes on the figure for the applicable car s decals. For painting we recommend you browse the various railroad car colors at your local hobby shop or on-line shop. These cars could be painted several colors from a dark grey, black or even red. Some may have even been camouflaged. The decking can be stained or painted. You can use a wire brush to distress the wood and give it a worn, torn up look. Tank treads were not easy on this wood. Look for good references to choose the colors. Even use modern day rail cars as reference.
