7/8n2 Scale Plantation Coach Introduction This small coach modeled in 7/8 n2 was inspired from a Hawaiian Railway Company plantation excursion car from the late 19 century.

The parts are numbered in the instructions and are referenced to the Parts List.

1 7/8n2 Scale Plantation Coach Introduction This small coach modeled in 7/8 n2 was inspired from a Hawaiian Railway Company plantation excursion car from the late 19 century. While not an exact replica, this model is intended to capture the feel of this early passenger coach. The instructions refer to several photographs to aid in placement and alignment of parts. The parts are numbered in the instructions and are referenced to the Parts List. Please take time to read through the manual before construction begins to become familiar with the construction process. It is generally easier to stain or paint each part before assembly so a few moments spent visualizing the final paint scheme is worthwhile. Advice on finishing techniques will be offered along the way. Safety You are responsible for the safe use of tools and materials used to build this model. Read and follow the manufacturer s warnings and wear eye protection. This kit contains small parts and is not intended for children.

Assembly Instructions 1.) Begin by locating the subfloor (part #1). Note the laser scribed marking 1.25 in from the outside edge as these will be used to position the intermediate sills.

Weight this on a flat surface to insure that there is no warping of the frame. (See photo 1 and 2) Photo 1 Photo 2 2.) Turn the frame over and add the planking as shown in (Photo 3).

2 Assembly Instructions 1.) Begin by locating the subfloor (part #1). Note the laser scribed marking 1.25 in from the outside edge as these will be used to position the intermediate sills. Box in the frame as shown using 1/2 x 1/4" outer frame sills and crossbeams. The 3/8 x 1/4 intermediate sills are glued in place by aligning the inside edge with the scribe markings on the sub floor. Weight this on a flat surface to insure that there is no warping of the frame. (See photo 1 and 2) Photo 1 Photo 2 2.) Turn the frame over and add the planking as shown in (Photo 3). Begin with the interior planks (part # 16a )aligning at each end and working toward the center of the coach. Next, install the 2 small spacers (part #16b ) followed with the end platform planks. These will overhang the subdeck and should be centered. 3.) Locate and stain the end beams (part #29 ). Glue these onto the ends of the main frame as shown in photos 5 and 6 making sure that the end beams are centered. Added weathering may be added by scoring the beam before staining. Photo 3

4.) Locate the coach ends (part #2) and sides (part #3). Glue the 3/16 sq. corner posts to the sides. (See photo 4 ) 5.

Install these toward the centerline of the coach so that they are not visible. Photo 4 6.

7.) Locate the side rails (part #22) and lightly sand off any laser carbonization. (Photo 5) These trim pieces can be left natural wood color for contrast or painted.

3 4.) Locate the coach ends (part #2) and sides (part #3). Glue the 3/16 sq. corner posts to the sides. (See photo 4 ) 5.) Install the upper side fascia (part #21) by centering to allow equal overhang on each end. Laser marks are located near each end to help with alignment. Install these toward the centerline of the coach so that they are not visible. Photo 4 6.) Once the upper fascia is in place, install the scribed upper side planking on each end (part #12) and between each window (part # 13). It is much easier to paint or stain these before installation. 7.) Locate the side rails (part #22) and lightly sand off any laser carbonization. (Photo 5) These trim pieces can be left natural wood color for contrast or painted. Glue these in place making sure that the top rail is flush with the bottom of the upper side planking (part# 13). They should also remain parallel to the bottom of the side frame. Install the scribed lower side planking (part #17). Photo 5 Photo 6 8.) Install the scribed end planking (part #14 & 15) and end fascia (part #25) onto the coach ends (part#2). These pieces should be stained or painted before installation. (photo 4) 9.) The windows are assembled in 3 layers. The outer (part #9) and inner (part #9) window frames are identical and can be stained. The middle frame is the window carrier (part #8) and does not need to be stained. (Photo 7)

To assemble the windows, glue one outer frame (part #9) to the middle frame (part #8) and insert the precut acrylic window glazing. Apply glue sparingly and avoid getting this on the glazing.

Carpenter s wood glue works well for this step and allows easy cleanup. Finish the window by gluing the inner frame (part #9) in place. All of this is accomplished in one step so the whole assembly can be weighted on a flat surface and allowed to dry. Repeat this for all 8 windows and feel fortunate that there are not 30 windows on this coach! Glue each completed window in place from the inside of the coach body. Neatness will pay off in the finished model here. USE GLUE SPARINGLY for the best results and avoid getting glue on the glazing! Photo 7 10.) Next, the side and end assemblies are assembled around the mainframe using the precut notches. These are held in place using clamps. Spend some time insuring that everything is square adjusting the clamps as necessary. The notched roof panel (part #4) can help with alignment. (Photo 8)

It should be a snug fit but removable with care. 11.

5 Photo 8 Once satisfied that everything is in good alignment, glue the side assembly to the ends using carpenter's wood glue. The body will be removable from the frame, so avoid getting glue on the adjoining surfaces. With the clamps still in place, gently lift the body away from the frame to test the clearance. It should be a snug fit but removable with care. 11.) Install the door frames beginning with the upper frame (part #23a) and lower threshold (part#23b) followed by the vertical side framing (part #24). This is a good place to make a contrast in the color scheme to accent the door. Natural wood stains or paint can add visual interest here. (Photo 11) 12.) The doors are assembled and installed in the same manner as the windows (using parts #6 & #7) The doors can simply be glued in place or can be made to open using miniature hinges available from Doll s house suppliers. (Photo 13) 13.) The interior details are completed before adding the roof. Start with part #30c by aligning it under the windows and followed by part #30d. Next, install parts #31 between the windows and then part #30a. (photo 9) Photo 9

6 14.) Part # 30b is then installed above 30c as shown in photo 10. The bench seat is attached under 30d and held in place with the turned leg supports. Do no glue these to the floor if you plan to make the coach body removable from the frame. Photo ) Install the 3 roof ribs (part #28) referencing photo 11. Photo 11

16.) Install the roof planking starting with the notched center plank (part #4).

Once installed, cover the planks with black sandpaper to simulate a tar paper roof.

Follow this with a misting of flat black spray paint and flat white to build up a patina. (photo12) Photo 12 17.

7 16.) Install the roof planking starting with the notched center plank (part #4). Next, install the remaining roof planks (part # 5) keeping them in alignment with the center plank. Once installed, cover the planks with black sandpaper to simulate a tar paper roof. 2-3 coats of matte acrylic spray will reduce the abrasive qualities of the sandpaper. Follow this with a misting of flat black spray paint and flat white to build up a patina. (photo12) Photo ) Install the 1/32 ply arced roof end fascia (part #8). (Photo 13) Photo ) Assemble the journals as per the manufacturer s instructions. The castings can be soaked in Blacken-It or painted to weather them before assembly. Remove the coach body from the frame. Measure back 1 1/8 from the inner edge of the crossbeams and mark the location. This will become a guide mark for the end of the wheel journals. (See photo 14)

It may be necessary to drill out the journals with a #30 drill bit to provide extra clearance for the axles.

8 It is recommended that the journals be installed with 5 minute epoxy for added strength and durability. Before gluing in place, test fit the wheels to see how everything goes into place. Be sure that the axles are parallel to each other and parallel to the end of the frames. Photo ) Install the end rails (See Photo 15). The NBW castings are added to the end beams using a #55 drill bit. Mount the brake wheel and pawl. The couplers are installed in the center of the end beam. Photo 15

9 20.) Next, assemble the steps. They can be pre-stained before assembly or painted afterward. 4 pieces make each step. Part# 26 is horizontal and part #27 is vertical and they glue together by aligning the notches and tabs. Make sure they are 90 degrees to each other referring to the photos and drawings for proper orientation. Next, join the 2 subassemblies together. Gluing is best accomplished by turning them on end. Finally, glue the side plates (part #11) onto the steps. 21.) The completed stair assembly is installed by gluing to the end beams and to the mainframe. 22.) Assemble the brakes and brake hangers using the supplied instructions. Install the brakes using photo 16 as a guide. Photo16
