The Chip Flyer Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild - Burlington, Ontario From the President s notebook At hands on in November we will be discussing Christmas ornaments. To make this evening successful we need as many members as possible to bring their Christmas ornaments and share how they made and finished them. The demonstrator for our meeting in November is Gary Miller from the London guild who will present artistic containers. I have seen a sampling of Gary s work on the WOW site and it is very impressive. In 2006 he won three gold s at Woodstock in three different categories. Calendar (see ghwg.ca for details) Nov 8 Hands on night. Lidded Boxes - Ornaments, discussion and examples. Nov 15 Artistic Containers : Demonstration by Gary Miller Dec 13 Christmas Party Our Christmas party is scheduled for Dec 13 at 7:30 at the Burlington Legion. (This is the second Thursday of the month our usual Hands-on night). We will put the map and information on the web site and in the Chip Flyer. You are asked to bring at least two Christmas ornaments and don t forget to enter a turning in the competition. We will collect Toys to be distributed by the Firemen and will have door prises and a raffle. The tickets for the raffle will be for sale at handson. We will be offering prises for early membership renewal. Memberships renewed prior to the end of the January meeting break will qualify to be entered into a draw for 5 $ gift certificates. Thanks to Robin Lesage and Al Murphy for setting up shelving in our storage area. The nominating committee has found candidates for all the open position except the President and are continuing to look for that position. The silent auction was a great success bringing in $ Thanks for your participation! George Jacquemain Jan 10 Spindle Turning and Sharpening Spindle Tools PAGE 1

Report on Totally Turning 2007 On Friday, Oct.12 th, I ventured with George & Joan Jacquemain east on the NY State Thruway to Albany, NY for a two day mini symposium Totally Turning At our first rest stop, who should we bump into but our 1 st Vice, Ken Keates and his wife Vi, also en route. The symposium was held in the monstrous Empire State Convention Centre in downtown Albany, which once we found our way in, was an excellent facility. The symposium featured eight rotations of an hour and a half each with 45 minute breaks for the instant gallery and vendor displays. It was very well organized with box lunches which we had pre-purchased as well as a banquet and auction on Saturday evening. There were twelve presenters, many of whom we have not had a prior opportunity to see. Some of those demonstrating were: JoHannes Michelsen, originator of the wooden hat; Kip Christensen, organizer of the annual Utah Symposium, known for his pens and lidded boxes as well as instructional videos; Alan Lacer, master of the skew; Eddie Noel, a full time professional turner from Montreal and André Martel, of the Martel Hook tool. Brian McEvoy, a full time turner from Edmonton and a student of Frank Sudol s some years ago, carries on Sudol s tradition of deep hollowing birch vases decorated with pyrography and piercing. In his home studio, he has a two inch diameter bar, eleven feet long! Kurt Hertzog, who has demonstrated for us recently, covered sharpening and work mounting techniques. I found Keith Tomkin s presentation on design concepts especially useful. An added benefit was the opportunity to shop the various vendors with our dollar at par and we all managed to find many turning necessities to bring home. You can read more about Totally Turning at I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a weekend getaway and an opportunity to enhance your skills. Mike Brazeau PAGE 2

Hollow Forms with Paul Ross - October Demonstration Paul Ross who runs Chalet Woodcraft in Boston was our demonstrator at the October meeting. Paul started by turning a green piece of box elder between centres to a cylindrical shape in preparation for end grain hollowing. The next job was to turn the outside shape to the form that was desired. Mass Paul told us is the turners best friend, so try to keep as much as possible at the base (the end being held by the chuck at this point) for as long as possible. opening in stages. This keeps the support-giving mass near the chuck in use for as long as possible. Now the vase can be left to dry for 2 to 3 months. Next, Paul used a large sawtooth bit to drill out as much of the interior as possible. This keeps the work to a minimum. The next operation was to clean out the interior using a captured bar hollowing tool. The one used by Paul was an amalgam of commercial parts and home made additions. He commented that several good commercial versions are available. At this point, the laser is not really required as wall thickness is not too critical. The main technique is to cut to final thickness from the Paul had brought along a dried piece to continue his demonstration. As the piece will have dried to an oval shape, the first task is to true up the spigot so that the piece can once again be held in a 4 jaw chuck. For this operation, the piece was held by a drum chuck using the tail stock for support. PAGE 3

how he provides support for the nearly finished piece by using a set of ABS pipes mounted on a After truing up the outside, Paul attached a contrasting piece of wood at the neck to add interest to the piece. The exterior was now sanded and finished. The last task was to complete the interior by taking the wall to the final thickness. For this, the captured bar was again used (this time with the laser attached). Holding a hollowed piece like this on the lathe can be a bit tricky. But Paul showed us face plate. This holds the piece right at the base, and together with a steady rest, gives good stability for the final critical stages. Peter Wright PAGE 4

Thank you for your continued interest in the GHWG and good luck. Turning Pens (V. 1) with Kip & Rex (Basics & Beyond) DVD #2258 (approx. 70 minutes) Rex Burningham & Kip Christenson have produced this two volume DVD series as a companion to their book Turning pens and pencils. Volume #1 works with the Slimline pen kit showcasing the virtually unlimited design and material choices, using the miniature lathe. The first pen is using a 5/8 share of Cocobolo. We are taken through cutting the square on the band saw, sizing the lengths of two blanks, alignment lines, drilling with a 7mm brad point drill in a homemade jig, gluing up brass tubes inside blanks, trimming the barrel and finally mounting on a mandrel. The tools used are ½ spindle gouge, 1/16 parting tool, and a ½ skew. The pen blank progresses through rounding, shaping, matching ends to bushings and finally sanding from 120 to 600 grit followed by 0000 steel wool. The finish used is friction polish. The pen is assembled using a vise after softening the ends. Variations of the Slimline pen kit include using different designs, materials and parts of the kit. A Tulipwood pen was made using different size blanks, and detailing with a wire burner. Other ideas included using stabilized woods, burls, spalted woods, Dymondwood and antlers. Tool use and adhesives were also covered. More excitement is promised in Volume 2. A very good hour for a person who has exhausted the basic Slimline pen kit and now wishes to experiment a little.
