1 The Chip Flyer Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild - Burlington, Ontario Presidents Report 2006 Wow did 2006 ever go by fast and now I have to report what we did! We resolved to improve the presentation of the demonstrations and we added the large screen and rear projector to complement our video setup. A members photo galley was started. Peter Wright is taking pictures of each member which will enhance our familiarity with each other. Make sure you have your picture taken. Calendar Jan 11 A new logo contest was launched and we will be voting on the winner at the February meeting. The library was expanded with new titles and old titles are being converted to DVD format. Pat O Brien has organized the presentation of the library to allow items to be found more easily. The guild participated in two demonstrations: One at the Lincoln County Fair and the other at the Hamilton Wood show. Geraldine Kelter coordinated both events and they Making beads: Malcolm Cummings with the skew, Mike Brazeau with the Dixie point tool and Gerald Matwychuk with a spindle gouge. Jet lathes will be setup for experimentation. Jan 19 Feb 8 Production Bowl Turning: with Eugene Schlaak Texturing Approaches: Dremmel, Proxon and Sorby tools will be demonstrated and available for trial. were highly successful. Our Guild has continued to replace members who have left the guild and our numbers have been maintained. A special thanks to all who have participated in these two events. A mentor program was started to introduce new members to the club, its members and all activities that take place. This year s special demonstration was given by Jimmy Clewes. Jimmy gave a fantastic demonstration and donated his pieces to the club which allowed us to more than cover the cost of the demonstration. Members provided excellent demonstrations this year: Peter Rand Driven By the Rapid Evolution of Woodturning Art, Jim Shafer- Beyond Basic Pens, Tom Hurst - Off Centre Turning and Doug Newlove Turning for Furniture. They put a lot of effort into their presentations and PAGE 1

2 added significantly to our knowledge. Demonstrators Bob Rolling Plutonic Solids, Kurt Hertzog Work Holding Methods, Rudi Schafron Bowl Turning, Martin Groening What Is In the Wood, and Marilyn Campbell Decorative Uses of Epoxy in Woodturning all added greatly to our guild. Hands on evenings continued to provide a good source of information to our members: January - Candlesticks presented by our members, Feb - Musical skews conducted by Malcolm Cumming. In March Mike Brazeau showed us how to turn Easter eggs. In April members tried out hollowing with different methods. In May the collaborative project was reviewed. In June Dave Page showed us how to make peppermills. In September Tom Hurst provide hands on lattice turning. In October Paul Rapattoni leads us through inside out turning. November Christmas ornaments were shown and discussed. Special thanks to Robin LeSage for all of his efforts as retiring Hands-On coordinator. They year was capped by the Christmas party organized by Al Murphy, Rick Cullis and Ken Keates. All phases were a success and it was particularly encouraging to see that the number of entries into the competition has grown. Personally I was inspired by the 2006 AAW symposium in Louisville this year. The advantages of being associated with AAW were clearly obvious. Paul Rapattoni who first joined the executive as member at large and then moved to membership will complete his term in January. Paul has been a staunch supporter of the guild and we thank him for all his efforts. I look forward to completing my term of office this next year and trying ways to improve an excellent guild. George Jacquemain Notes from the President: We now have to turn our attention to the new year starting with the election of officers in January for the next two years. Most open positions on the executive have one candidate proposed by your executive. Secretary: Rick Cullis has agreed to run. Chip Flyer Editor and Webmaster: Peter Wright has agreed to run. Membership Secretary:: Peter Midgley has agreed to run. Second Vice President: Al Murphy has agreed to run. Executive Member at Large : need a candidate. Good opportunity to learn how the executive works. We also require someone to setup and run the video recording at the meeting. Peggy will continue to do the filming. PAGE 2

3 GOLDEN HORSEHOE WOODTURNERS GUILD MINUTES OF ANNUAL MEETING, JANUARY 19, 2006 The meeting was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Industrial Street in Burlington. Based on our membership for 2005, 175 members, the quorum necessary for approving constitutional changes was 30% of 175 = 52 members. There were 95 members in attendance. In the absence of Secretary George Jacquemain, Rick Cullis was appointed as recording secretary. AGENDA 1. The annual meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM by the President, Mike Brazeau, who presented the minutes of the January 20, 2005 annual meeting, which were published in the January Chip Flyer. 2. Robin LeSage moved the acceptance of the minutes, seconded by Bob Saunders. CAR- RIED 3. New nominations were put forward by the executive search team of Joanne Hallman and George Daer. New nominations were called for three times. No new nominations were presented. Motion to close the nominations was made by Mike Shepherd, seconded by Joe Buchmueller. CARRIED New appointments are: President - George Jacquemain 1st VP - Andrew Turnbull Secretary - Rick Cullis (1 year term to replace George) Treasurer - John Dabbs Member-at -large - Peter Midgeley Executive Assistant - Ken Keates Continuing on the executive with one year remaining on their term are: 2nd VP - Al Murphy Newsletter editor - Peter Wright Membership Secretary - Paul Rapattoni 4. Treasurers Report - John Dabbs presented the treasurers report for 2005 as follows: Receipts for the year 2005: $11,500 Expenditures for the year2005: $12,500 The year started with $9400 in the bank. The year ended with $8300 in the bank. PAGE 3

4 Doug Kurtz moved the acceptance of the report, seconded by CARRIED 5. In the President s report Mike Brazeau was able to report that GHWG is a very healthy guild with approximately 175 members. We now have a well equipped library as well as equipment and a presence on the internet through our website. The executive has developed a very good working relationship with the Knights of Columbus over the last four years. He expressed his thanks to fellow executive members; Al Murphy 2nd VP Paul Rapattoni, George Jacquemain, Peter Wright for his work on the newsletter and the web site, and Kevin Gillespie who has now moved to Windsor. He acknowledged the work of Robin LeSage, who, although not on the executive has so effectively organized our Show and Tell, the Christmas party and hands on night. Other acknowledgements included: the Library crew, headed by George Jacquemain, of Pat O Brien, Ed Hummel and Geraldine Kelter, Hugh Widdup for his work in keeping the coffee organized, Peter Midgely and Stan Mott for their work with the video equipment, George Daer and Joanne Hallman for their executive search Peggy and Tom Wharrick for Woodturning 101, and the advertisers for their financial support. Just renew your membership for 2007 before the break at the January regular meeting (January 18, 2007) and you are automatically entered. Call Gord Carter Turn it On (V. 2) with Jimmy Clewes DVD # 2202(approx. 2 hours) Jimmy continues this series completing two more projects, a Ziracote footed bowl with a brass rim inlay, and an unsupported long stem (11 ) goblet. Close up video of tool work, and an explanation of the design being created interspersed with why the tool is sharpened using that particular profile is always interesting. Problems encountered cutting, mixing the brass inlay with epoxy, inlaying and finishing with the usual sanding sealer and wax as well as the need for a cup of tea keep the DVD moving. It should be noted that jimmy uses the parting tool extensively and in differing orientations as he works through both projects. The goblet is sanded and finished as he turns from the cup to the base, and he includes a captive ring. Finishing this project though involves shellac, a wax containing an abrasive, and finally a cream. The DVD concludes with tips on the conversion a tree into turning material plus a very interesting trip down the memory lane (history of woodturning). Needless to say another very interesting 2 hours of learning! P.J. O Brien A sad passing: Frank Sudol has died at the age of 72. He was one of the leaders of the world woodturning community, and was perhaps best known for his style of pierced thinly milled birch. He created works known for their color, animal shapes, and woven filigree designs. He lived in Paddockwood, Saskatchewan, and was a member of the Prince Albert Woodturners Guild In one interview with a local newspaper, he shared his philosophy for being a successful artist. "The message for my students is you will never be remembered for what you copied, but you will be remembered for what you created...once you reach inside, you will have original work." He is survived by his partner Lois Laycraft and his Children. PAGE 9
