2 January 2019 Th Call of th Lath As I sit hr and contmplat what to say as w start 2019, I m rmindd that w, th now mmbrs of Flint Hills Woodturnrs, cam togthr in March of 2015 to form a 501(c)(3) non-profit club composd of individuals who ar intrstd in larning and promoting th art of turning wood. Th club is for hobbyists in th Flint Hills rgion of Northast Kansas and w ndd th yar with around 50 mmbrs and continu to hav nw mmbrs visit and join. Undr th ladrship of Tom Boly ovr th last 3 plus yars w hav continud to fulfill our mission of promoting, ducating and advancing th art of woodturning. W hav much to thank Tom for and I would ncourag ach of you to xprss your apprciation to him for his tim and ddicatd srvic to this club. W startd out our fist mting in his prsonal shop which soon bcam th mting plac for our club. As w grw in numbrs and bgan to out grow his shop spac w bgan to sarch for anothr facility that could provid th spac and conditions to hav a lath and nvironmnt that allows and vn ncourags woodworking. Tom was a ky part in finding th Goldn Prairi Hony Farms facility that w now hav th plasur of mting at. H also has graciously continud to allow th us of his shop for our skill nhancmnt sssions and his shop also is th hom of svral of our club laths. Many of th club pursuits to ducat and promot woodturning ar gratly du to Tom s prsonal involvmnt. So, a big harty thank you gos out to Tom for all that has don and mant to this club. Tom has continud to offr his shop for skill nhancmnt sssions and h will also continu to organiz th You Gotta Eat tim ach month. I m sur h will continu to b a valuabl rsourc and asst as w mov forward. Any club must hav on thing to b a club and that is mmbrs. Why do I say this? Wll I want to xprss that our club is aliv and doing wll bcaus of you th currnt mmbrs. Without mmbrs thr is no point. Thr ar many things that ar ndd to nsur our club and our mtings tak plac. I know that many of you ar fully ngagd in ths fforts but thr ar qually as many that ar not. W currntly hav som folks that stup for ach mting but w could us additional hlp. Othrs hlp clan up and put things away aftr th mting but w could always us mor hlp. Bob has bn turning and slling bowls for 8 to 9 yars and prfrs turning onc turnd bowls instad of th mor common twic turnd bowls. Th shap of onc turnd bowls will usually distort as th bowl dris, but Bob says his customrs prfr that as it adds charactr to th bowls. Bob prfrs to tak bowl blanks from trs that hav bn flld in th wintr instad of wood harvstd in th summr, as cracking whil drying th wood is lss common in wintr wood. Bob notd that whn considring th orintation of th bowl to b takn from a log, th orintation of th sap wood and th pith is an important dsign considration, as it dtrmins th orintation of th figur of th grain in th bowl. Bob suggstd an xcllnt book on bowl dsign is Richard Raffin s Th Art of Turnd Bowls, which FHW has in its library. Bob uss a chain saw to shap a bowl blanks instad of a band saw; it avoids braking xpnsiv band saw blads. Aftr rmoving a bowl blank from a tr log, h immdiatly puts it into a plastic bag to avoid any loss of moistur, which can caus cracking, and h liks to turn it no mor than a day or two latr. To mak th bowl, Bob mounts th bowl blank on th lath with a fac plat attachd to what will b th top of th bowl. H wor a smock as a lot of watr is thrown from th wt wood. Using a 5/8 bowl goug, h first turnd th outsid of th bowl and its bottom, and h also mad a tnon on th bottom. 8

Nxt, th bowl, which is now likly to b warpd, was rmountd on th lath. H typically sands his bowls with cloth backd sandpapr starting at 120 grit, thn 180 grit, 220 grit, and finally with 320 grit sandpapr. H spritzs th bowl with watr to rais th grain, and r-sands with 320 grit. H mountd th bowl on a shop-mad jam chuck and holds it in plac with th tailstock. A divot in th tnon placd thr whn h arlir mad th tnon hlps cntr th work. 9

10 Th tnon was rmovd with a goug and thn, off th lath, h rmovd th rmaining small nib with a chisl. H thn powr sandd th bottom. Bob signs his work on light wood with a burnr and on dark wood h ngravs his signatur. Mahony s walnut oil is his finish. Bob obtains much of his wood from th Rily County Transfr Station, and h slls his bowls for about $10 pr inch of diamtr. Nd Gatwood - Scrtary 10

Thr ar rally two grindrs which woodturnrs I know us in thir shops to sharpn thir woodturning tools. Th first is a Tormk, an xpnsiv but xcllnt knif sharpnr. Jigs to hold woodturning tools ar availabl but that is not th bst for a woodturnr for svral rasons. I don t want to disparag th Tormk as it is a top quality machin but my rasons for not rcommnding it ar ths: mostly usful for knivs; dos not hav a way to asily rshap a tool which has gottn off angl; rarly found in woodturning shops and nvr at public dmos or classrooms. Thrfor, th standard low spd grindr with a sharpning whl at ach nd is th bttr styl as it will hav both a fin and coars whl. Th coars whl is bst usd for rshaping a tool which has gottn out of whack. This is what narly all woodturnrs hav and what is takn to public dmos. If that is what you also hav at hom, you will alrady know how to us it Ths low spd grindrs run at about 1725 rpm and hav friabl ston whls or CBN whls. Th friabl whls ar softr and bttr for us with woodturning tools. CBN whls ar xpnsiv but xcllnt for high spd stl. Always us ston whls for carbon stl tools as thy will damag th CBN whls. Evryon I know who is a woodturnr has a slow spd grindr with two whls, on coars and on fin, with th Onway Wolvrin jig and th Vari-Grind jig. Th thr rasons to gt that st-up ar it is asist to us, it is what you will likly ncountr if you go to anyon ls s shop to do som turning, and that is th typ of grindr which would b takn to any public turning vnt such as a public club dmo. I hav always had th fin whl on th right and th coars whl on th lft, thn put th platform in th rcivr undr that lft-hand whl and th pockt bar on th right, as shown in th first photo. If you us somon ls s rig, b sur you know which whl is on which sid. Whn you st up th Vari-Grind jig for ithr your bowl goug or spindl goug, cut a pic of wood or small PVC pip to just fit btwn th nd of th pockt bar and th rcivr and mark it as such so you can quickly st it whn sharpning. Do th sam for th othr goug and sharpning will b much asir as th st-up will b quick. If using CBN whls, thos spacrs should b good forvr but if using ston whls, you may nd to chck thm from tim to tim for th right lngth as th whls will slowly gt smallr and smallr ovr tim as you drss thm. 11

12 Drss thm? That trm mans using a diamond dvic to squar up, clan up, and r-flattn th fac of th ston whls. As you us th whls, thy will dvlop groovs and will tnd to clog up with mtal so claning thm up by ssntially grinding th fac of ach whl just a bit with a diamond drssr will mak sharpning much mor ffctiv. CBN whls do not nd to b drssd lik that as thy will hold thir shap and siz just fin. Now that you hav your grindr rig mountd on a board, it is asy to fastn to your workbnch or whrvr you want it to b as wll as asy to unfastn to tak to a dmo if ndd. Just put a coupl scrws down through th board into your wood workbnch or stand and you ar st. If that is impractical, thn prhaps a coupl clamps will b sufficint. Whn taking it to a tmporary location, just stting it on a tabl or bnch will work as long as you don t push against it too hard whn sharpning which you rally shouldn t do anyway. Th Vari-Grind jig is to b usd as notd in th instructions. Th gnral practic is to hav th nd of th goug sticking out 2 from th jig but som us 1 ¾ instad. Both ar fin but pick on and stick with it. You can mount a small pic of hard wood on th bas board btwn th grindr and on rcivr so you can quickly xtnd th goug from th jig by that distanc (2 or 1 ¾ ) and tightn th hand scrw to hold it in plac. You can b rally hlpful to your fllow woodturnrs by mounting a similar pic on th othr sid and making on st back 2 and th othr 1 ¾. I highly rcommnd facing that pic of wood with somthing hard lik a pic of Formica bcaus othrwis ovr tim, you will slowly cut a groov in th fac of th wood and th goug will stick out too far. Us it gntly and it should last a long tim but ultimatly, rplacing it is fairly simpl. That formica-facd block is shown in this pictur btwn th risr panl undr th grindr bas and th right hand rcivr. In min, it is 2 from th front of th board to th block. Thr is on mor accssory which will mak your grindr particularly usabl. Add a block to th back of th bas board on which th grindr is mountd which has a coupl of ¾ hols drilld in it and on or two ¼ hols as shown in this pictur. As you can s, looking ovr th top of th grindr to th glud-on block bhind it, that block provids a plac for your Vari-Grind jig and a diamond stick which can b usd to fil off th rolld-ovr stl whn you hav to rshap a tool which has gottn out of shap. 12
