1 TAKE HOME BARRY Jill and Tom have a lovely home with a nice backyard. There s just one problem; the death drop; a large concrete slope from the backyard to the carport that is a magnet for their two young boys Freddie and Billy. Barry finds Jill in Bunnings looking for something to protect her boys from falling off this death drop and with her husband away, she s looking for a solution she can do on her own. Jill would also like something to keep boys occupied outside the kitchen window where she can see them, so Baz puts together the ultimate pirate ship sand pit that will give them hours of fun; all under Jill s watchful eye.

2 FENCE With Freddie and Billy are two little boys with adventurous spirits, but with the large drop from the garden down to the carport, Jill simply can t afford to take her eyes of them when they play outside. There is also a big drop down into the neighbors yard, so an L shaped fence across the carport and along the side perimeter is the perfect solution to protect the kids from tumbling down either side of the garden. An aluminum fence is chosen, as it doesn t provide Freddie and Billy places to get footholds for climbing like a wooden picket fence might. With thin black aluminum columns, this fence also blends into the surrounds and doesn t hinder their view.

3 HOW TO ERECT A FENCE The most important thing for installing a fence is to get it straight. 1. Firstly, mark out where you ends of the fence to be by hammering a wooden stake into the gound a. In Jull s case, the fence will be an L shape, so a stake also marks where the corner post will go 2. Hammer a nail into the top of each stake and tie brickline between them Barry s offsetting the posts 200mm from the string, so he stay in situ throughout the job 1. From the corner post, measure 200mm in mark that spot with spray paint 2. Measure the length of the fence panel along the string and mark a. In this case the fence panels are 2400mm long 3. Now mark out 200mm from the string, forming a cross where the post will go

4 4. With the post spots marked, dig the holes with a post hole pincer a. Depth of the hole should be about 1/3 of the height of the fence. Our fence is 900mm high so the holes should be about 300mm 5. When the holes are at the correct depth, place a fence post in the hole, measure that it s 200mm from the string and hold in place by clamping it to a tomato stakes 6. Check the post is vertical with a spirit level and adjust if necessary 7. Pour concrete mix into the hole and mix with water a. The quick-set concrete is set in 15 minutes 8. Remove tomato stakes and clamps from now set fence posts 9. Place fence panel in between posts and make sure it s level

7 PIRATE SHIP SAND PIT While the new fence will stop little Freddie and Billy from tumbling over the edge of the garden, prevention is always better than cure, so Barry builds a pirate ship sandpit outside the kitchen window that will occupy the boys where Jill can see them. The timber sleepers have already been pre-cut by Bunnings, so all Barry has to do is follow the instructions he printed from the Bunnings website and screw them altogether.
