1 FATHER S DAY MAN CAVE Richard and Kylie and their two boys recently upgraded from a unit they had outgrown to a larger townhouse. One of the benefits of this new home is a garage that was quickly adopted by Richard and the boys as an area where they can play video games and watch movies. With two growing boys, space is at a premium in their new home, so the family see the garage as a way to expand their living space. But like most garages it is not a user-friendly space, being stuffed with bikes, boxes and heaps of junk. With Barry s help, they ll turn this garage into the ultimate man cave that the whole family can enjoy together.

3 PREPARING THE GARAGE Barry s plan is to split the garage into three zones; an office area, a games area and a DIY area. Together with some smart storage options, the garage will be a place the whole family can hang out together. This is a job Barry needs some help with, so he calls on Dylan. Their first task is to clear out everything that s currently in there - the oversized couch, big screen TV, desk and computer are all carefully cleared away before the existing shelves are unscrewed from the walls. Next is the task of filling and patching all the holes in the walls that have been left behind. This is an easy job with some gap filler and a plastic joint knife. Barry and Dylan simply apply some gap filler over each hole and scrape off any excess. It s dry in no time and ready for some sealer. With the sealer applied and dry, the wall is ready for painting. Taubmans have paint for every occasion and this makeover is no exception. The Endure range is perfect for painting over the brick walls; with one wall being painted in the colour Elfin (a mint green) and the others staying white in Crisp White. Barry is going to lay down some vinyl flooring to give the room a nice texture and also some warmth underfoot. But before this can be done the existing concrete floor needs to be levelled off due to some imperfections. An easy way to do this is with Ardit floor levelling cement. After mixing it with water and trowelling it out across the floor, you re left with a level surface to lay the vinyl on to.

4 Underlay is put down before laying the timber look vinyl floor. The underlay will help insulate the room, which is extremely handy during colder winter nights. Finally the vinyl floorboards are laid down. Dylan and Richard stagger the joints like brickwork, so they don t all line up in one big row. This not only looks better, but also provides greater strength. 5 TRANSFORMING THE GARAGE With the walls painted and the flooring laid down, the team are ready to really start transforming this garage into a family friendly man cave. To create space, Barry s design will use standard Kaboodle kitchen cabinets and attach them to the roof, while the bikes will be hung on the wall using special bike hooks. The TV will be attached to the cabinets at the end of the garage and because of its weight; the cabinets will need to be anchored to the ceiling to carry the extra weight. Holes are drilled in the ceiling with a hammer drill and masonry bit. These are filled with a chemical resin to support a threaded bar in the roof. After the chemical resin has dried, anchoring the threaded bars in the roof, they are threaded through the Kaboodle cabinets and fastened with a washer and nut. A TV wall mount is then attached to the back of the cabinets and the TV attached to that.

6 More Kaboodle cabinets are attached together and to the floor below the ceiling mounted unit, forming a barrier near the garage door. They will be a great place for Richard to store all his new Ryobi tools and will also double as a bar. To create more structure for the bar, a melamine sheet is attached to the top of the Kaboodle cabinets and on the side. A second set of cabinets are fixed to the back corner of the room for even more storage and finally the room is furnished with a new couch, a bar fridge, some office chairs and a few plants.
