1 LAUNDRY MAKEOVER Brad and Corinne are living in their dream home, but their laundry just isn t working. It lacks space, storage and most importantly, functionality. There isn t any bench space to sort the washing and long term they plan to move the laundry across the hall into the large powder room/toilet, so any renovation needs to keep that in mind. Luckily, Barry s just the man to help Brad and Corinne transform their laundry into the functional workspace it needs to be.

This layout wastes a lot of valuable space though, so removing the three interior doors and replacing them with one entry/exit door to the whole room, Barry creates the extra bench space Corinne has always wanted. To achieve this the existing pantry, linen press, internal doors, cornices and even the laundry sink and toilet sink need to be removed. Because we re keeping the existing floor tiles in place we need to protect them from getting damaged during the construction process. So before any of that construction can begin, Barry lays down some ram board. This is easy to roll out, flexible enough you can fold it up against skirting boards but also tough enough to protect the tiles underneath even when a hammer is dropped on it. To pretty up the wall, Barry installs a steel niche insert, which can be used to feature ornaments, pictures, or in this case a hanging vase. He simply marks up the wall where the nice is to go, cuts through the plasterboard, attaches the niche insert and sets in place with some spakfilla.

Filled-in patches are given a light sand before a coat of primer/sealer goes on so the top coat of paint bonds properly. Once that is dry it gets a couple of coats of Taubmans Easycoat Kitchen & Bathroom paint in colour Crisp White. Easycoat is moisture resistant and prevents the growth of mould and mildew, making it perfect for laundries. Flat pack units are easy to put together and also far cheaper than getting custom joinery done from a high-end carpenter.

Our first option to patch the void is to replace the missing tiles, but we weren t able to find any that match. Another great option is to fill the hole with a self-levelling cement based compound. You simply mix one part water with five parts of the powder using a paint mixer drill attachment and a drill. Once the consistency is pasty, but still pourable, just pour into the void and let it fill the void in. If necessary, use a trowel to spread the compound around. Continue pouring the compound in to the void until it is level with the existing tiles. Let it dry and after only a few hours it will be ready to walk on. Dylan and Barry bring the now assembled cupboards into the reconfigured laundry, place them in the right spot, clamp and screw them together. We don t want them fall over, so they are screwed to the walls for safety. Walls are now always perfectly horizontal, so you might need to place a packer between the wall and the cupboard to keep the cupboard level.

To make the most of the space, Barry has used some nifty cupboard accessories, like a laundry chute, pull-down ironing board and slide-out clothes hanger.

Another way to keep the costs down is to use the old laundry trough in the new laundry. Barry uses a template to mark out the shape and then cuts that out of the benchtop using a jig saw.

A good tip when cutting a laminate benchtop with a circular saw is to turn the bench over so the laminate doesn t lift up while it s being cut.

The sink is glued to the cavity to make sure no water runs into the cupboard underneath and the ends of the bench are also glued for extra strength when attaching to the cupboard and wall. Use silicone to coat the inside of the bench where the hole has been cut to prevent water getting into the board. Once the benchtop is in place, Barry glues an acrylic splashback to the wall. Not only does this add the splash of colour he promised Corinne, but is also quicker than tiling and grouting. Finally, the washing machine and brand new tumble dryer are installed and the room is styled with some plants, cleaning utensil and the old picture rehung on the wall.

8 RECYCLING THE DOOR Barry decides to remove a door and its framework in the one piece. This will save money from not purchasing a whole new door and architraves and it will save time in not having to build this unit again scratch. This way it can be put back in when ready.
