1 ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS GARDEN SHED BRIGHTOLN Dimensions: 10x10 (1 1/8") IMPORTANT Before beginning the assembly of your garden shed, please read the instructions carefully and follow them closely. By doing so you will avoid unnecessary problems and save time. It is recommended to start the assembly process only once all the components of your shed have been identified, analysed and classified. This notice also contains recommendations related to maintenance of your shed.

2 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY Characteristics of wood. Wood has a set of specific characteristics that are natural and inherent to it. Those characteristics include colour, density and the extent to which it is affected by humidity. Longitudinal cut, in most cases, will reveal a nice, decorative and often very appreciable look, which is called a texture. It should be added that wood has a specific smell, given by attars, resins and fermented substances, while freshly cut wood has a more pleasant scent. A very important attribute of timber is the ease with which it absorbs humidity. When timber dries, it shrinks. Similarly, when timber absorbs humidity, it increases in volume. Downsides. One of the downsides of timber is that it chaps and warps. When timber dries, the moisture firstly evaporates from the surface and outer layers and only then from the inside layers. Thus, when the outer layers start shrinking, the inside layers, due to stronger moisture, oppose to shrinking. Firstly the surface starts chapping, then the inside layers. When timber dries it can get a longitudinal warp or a cross warp. A longitudinal warp is when the drying straight balk bends, a flat plank twists and gets the form of the propeller. Wood has a set of specific technological characteristics. It easily splits along the fibre nicely holding metal fastenings; it can flex easily and is not very sensitive to depreciation. Screws hold timber extremely well. Screws have a much better grip with timber than nails. Taints: branchy timber, cracks, abnormal structure, infractions made by fungus or parasites. As timber is of biological origin, it is so varied that terms normal timber and abnormal timber are not strictly defined. Within the variety of sawn wood and sawn timber some taints due to fungus may occur: mould, brownness. Mould funguses generally do not affect physical and mechanical characteristics of timber. When timber is affected by biological (fungus), physical (environmental temperature and humidity) and chemical factors, it decomposes. Timber may last a long time, but fluctuations in humidity and temperature of the environment reduces its longevity. A variety of cracks may emerge, which will then both damage the integrity of timber and will facilitate infection with (and rapid development of) fungus. Generally speaking, the older the wood, the better the durability of its lumber. The most effective way to protect wood from insects and decay is to treat it with substances which are toxic to fungus and insects. 2

Protection. Assembling the shed should be carried out in a dry weather conditions. If rain should start during the assembly process, wood should be covered to avoid warping.

Once you have erected the shed, let it settle for a couple of days and finish with a coat of paint or appropriate treatment. If you wish to paint or treat your shed sooner, stomp your feet on the roof to help it settle faster. Make sure there are no unembedded tongues and grooves as warping may occur when moisture is applied. Foundation. Before erecting the shed it is important to make a firm and plain foundation, ideally using concrete, concrete slabs, or concrete blocks. It is very important to have the foundation corners at right angles and completely level. ATTENTION: You will find boards for hammering the wall-boards in the package. Do not hit the wall board using only the hammer. Please follow the instruction in the picture above or use a rubber hammer. 3

4 PREPARATION OF ASSEMBLY Tools needed for assembly: Rubber mallet Hammer Pliers for removing staples Philips screwdriver 5M Allen wrench for hinge adjustment Ladder Drill (optional) TREATED FLOOR JOISTS First, begin to form x inch square treated floor joists (part no. 1a). OPTIONAL! Put plywood subflooring to match the perimeter of the foundation. This adds additional stability and will prevent the floor from sagging in the coming decades NOTE: if building on a treated wood grid or plywood covered platform, you don t have to use the treated foundation beams at all. Just start building directly on your foundation. 4

Check for squareness by measuring the cross distance. Shift the corners until you get even distance. Fasten the treated foundation beams to the concrete using concrete anchors (not provided), then fasten two lower boards to the treated foundation beams using wood screws. If not using foundation beams supplied, fasten the lower wallboards directly to your foundation. Fasten lower wall boards using long wood crews to the floor joists. Screw inside the grove 2-3 inches away from the corner joint or predrill and screw through the joint. Predrilling is necessary if screwing the joint as the wood is thinner there and may split upon screw insertion. From there on, you won t need screws for the rest of the wall boards. 5

It s easier to install the door and windows when you only have assembled first 3-4 layers of boards, in that case you do not need to lift the assembled door or window frame very high. NOTE! If installing an add-on window, check the window installation instructions now. 6

Simply slide them in from the top. Now, you can put in the double door. First build the frame for the double door made from the lower strip of the door (part no. 12), the side strip of the door (part no. 13), the top strip of the door (part no. 14) and the inside strip of double door (part no. 13a) with six 0.19x3.54 inch screws into the pre-drilled holes, 1 at each connecting point. Make sure to screw them all the way in, inside the U-shaped groove. Slide the door frame through the top into the opening in the wall, hinges facing outside. DO NOT fasten the door frame to the wall boards. Continue mounting walls to the 8 th level of wall boards. Install (slide in) window (part no. 9) and continue mounting walls with wall-boards, and finish with top wallboards (part no. 11) that are incrementally longer. 7

The corner studs will prevent the walls from bowing out in the future. Space out the brackets to form the pocket and slide/hammer the stud from the top. Leave some room at the bottom to fit the floor boards and baseboard. Do not screw the studs until your floor is done and the roof is covered as the whole structure will settle from the weight of the roof. Once all that is done, screw the screws into the sliding slot near the center of the slot - do not overtighten - this allows the structure to expand and contract as the seasons change. ** Facade may vary ** 8

When walls are finish you can mount prefabricated gables (part no. 17 and 17a) above top wall-boards and fasten with four 0.19x2.75 inch screws, 1 at each side to the crossing of the walls. Note that sometimes the front gable has a notch that goes around the door frame. Make sure it slides well into the door frame. 9

Strengthen the construction with the protective wind studs (part no. 20) as shown in the picture 1 and 2. The protective wind studs can also be installed from the outside of a shed or skipped if you live in a low wind area. Check if the door closes properly. At this time you can still shift the whole structure to the sides as needed to square the door frame. The structure will lock once you install the roof boards. If the door "sticks" at the top or bottom, adjust the hinges using Allen wrench. You can shift the angle and height of the door by adjusting the hinges on the door panels. 10

Start covering the roof with roof boards (part no. 21). Begin at the front, nail or screw the roof boards at each point they meet the beam or wall. Make sure the tongue is facing the front. The roof board has to be flush with the beam. Continue all the way to the back. You may need to cut the last board narrow to make it flush with the beam at the back as well. NOTE! If you are assembling your shed during prolonged dry weather conditions, it is recommended to leave a gap of about 1/16 inch between each roof board, thus allowing wood to take its normal position in wet period. 11

Roof end boards (part no. 24) should be fixed to ends of roof boards to the bottom side. Attach the fascia flush with the roof boards but covering the roof board ends - your roofing material will have to extend over them. Drip edge is optional but recommended. You may install it as you start the roofing. 12

Finish floor installation with baseboards (part no. 26). Start with one side and move towards the other. There are several options for fastening the floor: 1. screw floor boards to the floor joist in a single row 2. screw floor boards to the floor joists in a staggered pattern 3. nail the floor boards to the floor joists through the groves to hide the nails. NOTE! There will be a gap at the sides of the floor boards around the perimeter. It's there to allow for ventilation and to allow "breathing room" for wood. It will be covered using the base boards Install the baseboards around the perimeter. Where the base board does not fit under the window or door frame, measure and cut it into smaller pieces. Nail or screw the base boards to the walls or floor. Depending on a size of the gap, you can choose to lay base boards wider or narrower side on the floor. REMINDER! Go back to the corner studs and fasten them using screws. Make sure to not overtighten the screws inside the sliding slot. 13
