1 MEDIA ALERT For Immediate Release May 1, 2015 Contact: Susan Zimecki Office: / Mobile: ZimeckiS@CarnegieScienceCenter.org Contact: Rossilynne Culgan Office: CulganR@CarnegieScienceCenter.org SCIENCE CENTER ANNOUNCES SUMMER OF EVENTS, EXHIBITS PROGRAMS FOR ALL AGES GENERATE SCIENCE INSPIRATION PITTSBURGH, May 1, 2015 Carnegie Science Center is offering a host of activities for people of all ages. Here s what s planned for this summer: H2Oh!: Why Our Rivers Matter exhibit Now Open At the new H2Oh! exhibit, discover why our rivers matter. Make it rain at the water table, use a thermal camera to explore the three rivers, make waves, engineer a pipe system, freeze colliding water droplets in mid-air and study their movement, view life on a microscopic level, and explore river data in real time all while thinking about how everyday decisions impact the water supply. This exhibit is presented by The Colcom Foundation and generously supported by: The Fisher Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation, Laurel Foundation, Dollar Bank, and Peoples. The Science Center s Summer of Water features water-themed weekends, all included with general admission: Water Weekends Saturdays and Sundays, June 20 Aug. 30 Clean rivers are important for people and animals, but how do we know if the water is healthy? Bring a water sample and test it for ph, oxygen, nitrates, and other water quality parameters. Hands-on activities explore local animals that rely on our rivers, how drinking water is cleaned, and more! Bubblemania: Science, Art, and Comedy! Aug Witness the unique combination of science, art, and comedy in Casey Carle s stage show Bubblemania! Learn how bubbles form, why they're spherical, how to make a cube bubble and
2 the science of bubble bursting - each topic related to the physical laws of the natural world. Hands-on activity stations allow visitors of all ages to explore the world of bubbles up-close. Rangos Omnimax Theater D-Day: Normandy 1944 May 15 Fall June 6, 1944: The largest Allied operation of World War II began in Normandy, France. But few know exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this region became the most important location in the world. With narration by Tom Brokaw and a blend of animation, live-action images, and computer-generated imagery, D-Day: Normandy 1944 tells the story of how this landing changed the world. Explore history, military strategy, technology, and human values. D-Day: Normandy 1944 is sponsored locally by Baierl Subaru. Now playing: Titans of the Ice Age reveals the world of saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, and the iconic mammoths, giants both feared and hunted by prehistoric humans. Titans of the Ice Age is sponsored locally by PA Virtual Charter School. Now playing: Great White Shark questions what we really know about the creature we love to fear. Great White Shark explores this beautiful animal's place in our imaginations, in our fears, and in its role at the top of the oceanic food chain. Great White Shark is sponsored locally by PA Cyber. Now playing: Mysteries of the Unseen World is an amazing journey into unseen worlds and hidden dimensions beyond our normal vision, uncovering the mysteries of things too fast, too slow, too small, or simply invisible. Showtimes and prices available at Go behind the scenes of Cold War-era submarine USS Requin Venture into unrestored areas of USS Requin with a Tech Tour. Learn how the submarine and its crew faced challenges, check out areas rarely seen by the public, see the conning tower, and look at the periscope. Available: June 14, 28; July 12, 26; Aug. 9, 23, from 9 11 am. For ages 15 and up. Advance registration is necessary. Full mobility is required. Cost: $15 members/$20 non-members per session. Snowball Day June 21 Those who saved a snowball from this brutal winter can bring it on June 21 to name their own admission price, and can banish that icy relic by launching it into the river (weather permitting)!
3 Sci Fi Weekend July Science fiction? Or fact? Join us in a celebration exploring the connections between scientific advances and the limitless human imagination. Learn about current space travel and how it differs from what we see on the big screen. Meet costumed characters from a galaxy far, far away, and watch special effects makeup artists work their magic!
