3 M5 eies Opposed Mode ensos M5B & M5RB Opposed (non-fibeoptic), Opposed fibeoptic, and Diffuse fibeoptic modes VOLTA: -V dc RA: feet in opposed mode (non-fibeoptic). ee excess gain cuves fo fibeoptic ange infomation. RO TM: milliseconds RATABLTY: millisecond BAM: infaed, 88nm The M5B/M5RB opposed mode senso pai is a vey high gain emitte/eceive pai that utilizes an inteconnecting synchonizing wie to "gate" the eceive to look fo a signal only at the instant when the emitte sends a pulse fom its LD. Because of the high powe of these sensos, they ae often used to "bun though" an opaque containe (a ceeal box, fo example) to detemine if contents ae pesent. pecial optics enable them to do this job even bette than othe sensos which may appea to have moe excess gain (such as the MULT- BAM B and BR). OT: lens blocks may be emoved fo shot-ange "bun-though" applications. This senso pai may also be used with fibe optics by adding the optional FOF5 fittings (o ode senso models M5BFO and M5RBFO). When used this way, they povide seveal times moe excess gain than the conventional M5LBFO. Range when used in the opposed mode with T individual fibes is 7 feet. ensing ange may be extended by use of L9 o LF lenses (see excess gain cuves). OT: the gain of this senso pai is too high fo use with a bifucated fibe assembly. The vey small amount of light that "leaks" though the fibe cladding within the bifucated bundle is typically enough to opeate the high-gain eceive. Fo diffuse (poximity) sensing, position two individual fibes side-by-side with the sensing tips paallel to each othe o mechanically conveged towads the desied sensing point. RO TM: millisecond RATABLTY:. millisec. BAM: infaed, 9nm Model M5LBFO may be used with the full ange of Banne glass fibeoptic assemblies fo sensing in the fibeoptic opposed, etoeflective, and poximity modes. The small size and fast esponse time of this senso make it suitable fo most fibeoptic sensing applications. A with T fibes M5LBFO opposed mode with T fibes. DTA H M5LBFO T fibes, no lenses T fibes, no lenses 8 OOD DTA--H n the opposed mode, the sensing ange is up to inches using /8-inch diamete fibe bundles, o up to inches using /-inch diamete bundles (used when vey small-diamete effective beams ae equied). With the addition of the L9 o LF lens, these anges ae inceased to and inches, espectively. (The absolute maximum ange is, as always, limited by the lengths of the fibes themselves.) A with T fibes and L9 lenses M5LBFO opposed mode DTA H M5LBFO with T fibes and L9 lenses 5 OOD DTA--FT Retoeflective sensing employs the bifucated (banched) fibe model BT along with eithe the L9 o LF lens. otice fom the excess gain cuves that the excess gain is at its maximum when the taget is close to the lens. This is in contast to most etoeflective sensos, in which the excess gain falls off damatically at close anges, and is due to the inheent coaxial natue of the fibe bundles. Retoeflective sensing is also possible using fibes without lenses, but in this mode the fibe will eflect light diectly off of objects that ae in the "poximity" ange of the fibe, typically the fist inch fom the end of the fibe. Also, the sensing ange to a etoeflective taget is geatly educed when a lens is not used (geneally to less than feet with a -inch diamete eflecto and to less than foot using etoeflective tape). The most commonly used fibeoptic sensing mode is the diffuse mode, due to the ease with which fibes may be configued to sense small pats in automatic assembly machines, vibatoy feedes, small conveyos, and othe "one side only" applications. Lenses ae not ecommended to extend the sensing ange of fibes in the poximity mode, since intenal eflections fom the back of the lens can cause false opeation. f moe ange is necessay, it is best to use two individual fibes conveging slightly to intesect at the object. f this is done, lenses may be added without concen fo intenal eflections. These models have totally-encapsulated cicuity within die-cast metal housings fo supeio esistance to moistue and physical abuse. The naow, /" wide housing design has gained this family of sensos the nickname of "the flatpack". These sensos may be odeed with special fittings (page ) to allow thei use in the fibe optic opposed, etoeflective, and diffuse sensing modes. This senso pai is used with a Banne B eies ac-coupled amplifie module (page ). 22 M5/M5R ensos M5 & M5R Opposed mode, analog output VOLTA: -V dc RA: feet; feet with L5 lens blocks RO: analog BAM: infaed, 88nm The M5/M5R opposed mode senso pai is a special pupose senso pai intended fo applications whee the signal change is so small that sensitivity setting would be difficult with conventional sensos and whee small amounts of dit buildup would pevent eliable opeation. These sensos ae fo use with the model B- ac-coupled pulse amplifie module descibed in the Banne catalog. The use of an automatic gain contol (A) feedback system adjusts the powe output of the emitte so that the system is always maintained at exactly the ight sensitivity, egadless of the ange, the backgound, o the degee of contamination. Because of the A cicuit, thee is no need fo a sensitivity adjustment on the eceive: sensitivity is set at the B- amplifie module. The output of the eceive is maintained at a level of appoximately 5V dc. Any inteuption of the sensing beam (as little as %) esults in a shot pulse at the eceive output. This pulse is then amplified by the B- to povide a useful logic-level signal. This senso pai may also be used with two FOF5 fibeoptic blocks and any of the Banne glass fibes fo fibeoptic opposed, etoeflective, o poximity mode sensing. (OT: Ode models M5FO and M5RFO, sensos which have FOF-5 fibe inteface blocks attached). When used with a pai of individual ectangula fibes (models R, R.5, o specials) it is possible to ceate a "cutain of light" to detect small pats falling at andom fom vibatoy feedes o small pesses. t is only necessay to beak appoximately % of the light beam to get a eliable output. Othe applications include thead beak and web flaw detection. A ed indicato LD on the emitte veifies "powe on", and an LD on the eceive lights when the A has "locked on" to a signal. The M5 and M5R fom an opposed mode pai that may be fitted with lenses, apetues, o fibeoptic adaptos fo a vaiety of close-diffeential sensing applications such as yan beak, wie beak, and web flaw detection. The powe of a modulated LD opposed senso pai plus the sensitivity of an ac-coupled amplifie offe a solution to many othewise impossible sensing applications. A-coupled amplifies espond only to quick changes in light level and ignoe gadual changes. As a esult, vey small changes in light level can be amplified. A-coupled amplifies ae highly sensitive to any input signal change. Thei use should be limited to closediffeential sensing applications whee conditioning of the optical system (e.g. adding apetues, using fibeoptics, etc.) cannot yield eliable sensing contast. All models have a sensitivity adjustment which sets the pecentage of input signal change that the amplifie will espond to. The oneshot models include a single-tun locking-shaft potentiomete that adjusts the duation of the output pulse. tandad one-shot time ange is. to second.
