We no longe offe a hamonic balance kit, but you can get the pats fom Mopa, balance P/N P , senso mount P/N P & senso P/N This adapte kit fits GM automatic tansmissions to Jeep 4.0L engine. This adapte will enable you to eplace the expensive and hadto-find Jeep TH400 case with the popula Chevy & GM tansmissions, o adapt the TH350 & 700R to the AMC engine. This adapte kit is not compatible with the Buick, Oldsmobile o Pontiac TH400 tansmission cases. All studs, bolts, washes, convete adapte, adapte plate and convete bolts ae funished in this kit. The kit does not include a flexplate. Please ead the following instuctions pio to stating the job. 2 Paso Robles, CA PAGE 2 OF 5 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: The toque convete adapte is designed to use the stock toque convete holes on the AMC flexplate. We have seen two diffeent bolt pattens on the stock flex plates. Ou aluminum adapte ing is dilled fo both of these pattens. One patten is symmetical and the othe is not, if all of you toque convete bolts do not line up popely, you may need to otate the adapte ing 90 degees until the all the hole do line up. Fo Jeeps 1988 to 2005 the Jeep flex plate is Jeep pat numbe P/N should be used fo the flex plate to the aluminum adapte ing. It is best to fist install the adapte plate onto the back of the engine and inspect the cleaance between the flexplate and steel adapte ing. Due to vaiations by the flexplate manufactues, we have encounteed some vaiations that will equie mino cleaances on the new steel adapte ing. The adapte plate should also be test fitted to the AMC engine, and the tunnel/fiewall cleaance should be checked and modified as necessay. 1. Remove the oiginal tansmission, tansfe case & dust cove plate. Clean the ea of the engine block fom all gease and dit. 2. Remove the tansmission dowel pins fom the back of the AMC engine block. 3. Remove the old pilot bushing fom the engine cank. This can be pefomed by using a 7/16" bolt and woking it back and foth inside the pilot bushing. o 4. You stock AMC dust cove plate and the Advance Adaptes adapte plate should be installed to the back of the AMC block using the two dowel aligning bolts. A access hole should be cut in the in the dust cove to allow the bolts to be installed into the flexplate to the new aluminum adapte ing. 5. Inset the 2 special washes and dowel bolts whee the oiginal AMC dowel pins wee emoved. Toque to 30ft/lbs with Loctite. These 2 bolts act as new dowel pins fo aligning the adapte plate to the AMC block. 6. Inset the 5 allen head cap scews into the engine o dust sheild. DO NOT TIGHTEN ANY BOLTS UNTIL ALL 3 BOLTS HAVE BEEN STARTED AND SNUGGED UP. Toque to 30 ft./lbs.
3 Paso Robles, CA PAGE 3 OF 5 7. Install the flexplate to the engine cank using the pope bolts and toque specifications. Make sue the flexplate has cleaance and does not dag on adapte plate. Pictue 8a The two diffeent ing gea heights. 8. AMC states had a few diffeent configuations. The state Bendix on these AMC states have TWO thow lengths (See Pictue 8b). This is to match the diffeent locations of the ing gea on the flywheels (See Pictue 8a). Make sue you Bendix has the pope engagement on the flywheel. Failue to obtain this can cause pematue failue of the Bendix o flywheel. 9. Fit the state and check fo pope cleaances. Make sue the state is indexed into the dust cove plate. 10. Cank you engine aound by bumping the state. This will enable you to make sue the Bendix teeth mesh with the flywheel. Check the cleaance between the flywheel and adapte plate. 12. The toque convete must be installed into the tansmission and you must veify the depth of the toque convete pad. The depth should be appoximately 1-1/16". Refe to the illustation on Page 5. If this dimension is not achieved, failue to the tansmission may occu. The toque convete should be filled with pope fluid befoe final assembly. 11. test fit the aluminum toque conve ing into the AMC cank, it should be a snug to slip fit. If it does not fit check you cank fo bus. Remove fom the cank and install convete adapte to the toque convete with eithe the metic bolts fo the 700R o the standad bolts fo the TH350 o TH400. If you ae using a 700R-4 automatic tansmission, the toque convete bolts will need to be P/N If a TH350 o TH400 is being used, then P/N bolts should be used fo the toque convete. 4.0L 4.2L Pictue 8b The two diffeent state engagements fo the above flywheels. (You stock state should emain the same. This infomation is povided fo customes equiing a new state moto.) 4 Paso Robles, CA PAGE 4 OF Befoe installing the tansmission to adapte plate, the tansmission must have a couple of modifications. The eas of the tansmission should be emoved. The passenge side is emoved fo state cleaance. The dive's side can povide adequate exhaust cleaance. The two bolt holes below the GM dowel pins on you tansmission must also be modified. The AMC dowel pin hole and GM bolt hole ovelap. The new special dowel bolt that secues the PLT to the AMC block now has a 5/16-18" hole dilled and tap in it. This is to fit the GM bolt hole without otating the tansmission. The ovelapping of the bolts mentioned above is not exact; theefoe, to fit the 5/16" bolt to the cente of the special dowel pin bolt, the tansmission bolt hole must be opened up to allow access. We suggest using a at tail file to elongate the two bolt holes unde the GM dowel pins. Tial-fit the tansmission until the 5/16" bolts fit the special dowel bolt. Two flat washes have also been povided allowing pope suface contact fo these 5/ p 16" bolts. You will have to gind some mateial off the sides fo this washe to fit popely towad the tansmission. We do not modify these washes in-house due to some vaiations on the diffeent GM tansmissions. Once these modifications ae made, secue all fastenes fom the GM tansmission to the PLT. Toque the 5/16" bolt 15 ft/lbs with Loctite. p 14. Afte the tansmission is bolted to the adapte plate. Make sue that the convete pulls fowad appoximately 1/8" fo engagement with flexplate. Check the hex head bolt head fo cleaance with the adapte plate, and make the necessay modifications if intefeence occus. 15. It is now time fo the dust cove. Due to the thickness of the adapte plate, the GM dust cove will not fit popely. We have found that by taking the GM tansmission dust cove and cutting off the section that extends upwads to the cank, the cove fits fine onto the tansmission (See Pictue 15). This does leave the flywheel exposed, howeve, the flywheels we sell ae solid and this should pevent any foeign objects fom enteing into the bellhousing. 16. Install the font dive lines. We ecommend a B & M spot shifte linkage fo the new tansmission, and a Loka flexible fille tube. 17. If the vehicle is on a lift the font dive shaft will be vey close to the engine exhaust pipes. Be sue to check fo cleaance befoe finalizing you convesion. 18. A kick down cable backet will need to be fabicated to fit you AMC block. 19. Fill with pope tansmission fluid. CAUTION: It is extemely impotant that you popely install the toque convete, toque convete spaces, and flexplate as specified in the Advance Adaptes instuctions. Failue to follow these instuctions will ceate sevee damage to both the tansmission and tansmission convete. If you installation does not have the pope convete location, you should contact ou sales depatment fo futhe instuctions. Pictue 15 The dust cove should be cut along the taped line.
5 Paso Robles, CA PAGE 5 OF 5 When eplacing a manual tansmission with a GM automatic tansmission, you will need new shote cank bolts to mount the new flexplate to you engine. These bolts can be obtained at you Jeep deale unde Pat No. J Along with these bolts, Jeep also used a bolt ing on the flexplate to stengthen the bolting suface. This ing is Jeep Pat No. J The installation of a kickdown cable is ecommended on the T350 and T400 tansmissions, and is equied on a 700R tansmission install. The poblem comes into play on how to connect the kickdown cable to one the vaious Jeep thottle linkages. Most installations will equie some fabication to accomplish this. On the Jeep TJ with a 4.0L 6 cylinde, we installed the 700R tansmission and was able to use a 52" GM cable. This cable mounted to the stock thottle linkage backet and equied just a simple etaining bolt. The 52" cable is had to find, so we offe it unde P/N KD. The last pecaution would be to hook up a neutal safety switch to avoid stating the vehicle while in gea.
