Unless a reasonable safe route that does not involve crossing the roadway can be provided, pedestrians should be appropriately directed with advance signing that encourages them to cross to the opposite side of the roadway. In urban and suburban areas with high vehicular traffic volum es, these signs should be placed at intersections (rather than m idblock locations) so that pedestrians are not confronted with m idblock work sites that wil induce them to attem pt skirting the work site or m aking a midblock crossing. 4) W hen existing pedestrian facilities are disrupted, closed, or relocated, the tem porary facilities sha l be detectable and include accessiblity features consistent with the features present in the existing pedestrian facility. 5) W hen the driving surface open to traffic is miled, is a tem porary surface m ade of loose m aterial, or when directed by the engineer use the W 8-5 (Grooved Pavem ent) or W 8-7(Loose Gravel) a "C" distance after the W 0- (Road W ork head) on m ainline approaches. Signs m ay be used with the W 8-5p m otorcycle plaque as directed by the engineer. Display signs in advance of the condition as long as the condition is present. 6) lternative tem porary rum ble strip options m ay be available.
