1 SIGN PERMIT APPLICATION Chocolay Charter Township Planning and Zoning Department 5010 US 41 South Marquette, MI Phone: Fax PERMIT #SP- Permanent $ Temporary $ Receipt # Date Paid Regulations apply only to signs visible from the public right-of-way, public facilities, trails open to the public, and navigable waterways. Temporary signs do not require a permit unless they are mounted longer than 90 days provided they meet the standards of the Township Zoning Ordinance. Temporary signs that do not meet the standards must be processed as permanent signs. Temporary signs are not counted in the total area calculations for a property. See the Zoning Ordinance Section 18.1 for a list of prohibited signs, and signs that do not require a permit provided they meet standards. You must have a permit to erect, replace, move, or alter a sign structure. Alterations that involve a change in the size or shape of an existing sign require a permit. Changing or replacing a sign face or panel, or changing copy or color on a permitted sign or performing repair and maintenance is not an alteration and does not require a permit. You may fill out one application for multiple signs on a property, however, off-premise signs require a separate application. Circle all applicable below. 2 For complete sign requirements, please refer to the Chocolay Township Zoning Ordinance Section 18.1 Signs. HOW TO MEASURE FREESTANDING SIGNS (Pole or Ground) Area: The sign area (in square feet) shall include the frame (background panel for the graphics), but shall not include the pole or other structural support unless such pole or structural support is internally illuminated or otherwise so designed to constitute a display device. If there are multiple frames, the sign area shall be the sum of the areas of each frame (do not count the space between, if any). Calculate the area by taking the length of the frame times the width. When two (2) identical sign faces are placed back to back so that both faces cannot be viewed from any point at the same time, and are part of the same sign structure, the sign area shall be computed as the measurement of one (1) of the two (2) faces. The area of all other similar multiple-sided signs shall be computed as fifty (50) percent of the sum of the area of all faces of the sign. Area does not include structural supports or nonstructural or decorative trim, or areas separated from the background surface by a distinct delineation, reveal, or border. Height: Measure (in feet) from the base of the sign or supportive structure at its point of attachment to the ground to the highest point of the sign. A freestanding sign on an earth mound or other base that has the effect of raising the grade shall be measured from the grade of the nearest paved road. Where a freestanding sign is mounted along a road that has a higher grade level as compared to the grade level directly below the freestanding sign, then height shall be measured from the road grade to the highest point of the sign. Height does include structural supports and nonstructural or decorative trim in measuring to the highest point of the sign. Setback: Additional sign area is permitted for signs that are setback more than forty (40) feet from the travel lane as measured from the marked pavement edge (white line) of the nearest roadway to the nearest portion of the sign. HOW TO MEASURE WALL / WINDOW / CANOPY SIGNS Area: Allowable wall sign area is calculated as a percentage of the area of the applicable building façade (or building unit façade) in elevation view, and varies based on the setback of the sign from the travel lane. The sum of the area of ALL such signs on one façade shall not exceed this stated percentage, therefore, this application must include the area of all applicable signs (whether existing or proposed) on a building façade or building unit facade. Area of Sign Elements: For a wall sign which is framed or outlined to provide a background for a sign display, the area shall include the entire portion within such background or frame. For a wall sign composed of individual letters, figures, or elements mounted on a wall or similar surface, the area shall be the area of the smallest geometric figure, or the sum of the combination of regular geometric figures, which form or approximate the perimeter of all sign elements in the display. Height: No portion of the wall mounted sign shall exceed the height of the building façade or the architectural projection on which it is mounted. Setback: Setback shall be measured from the boundary indicated by the marked pavement edge (white line) of the nearest roadway to the nearest portion of the sign. GRAPHIC SIGN SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS All submissions must include a complete description and scale drawings of all existing and proposed signs, and all information required information as described below. Documents shall be no larger than 11 x 17 inches. Specifications and construction documents shall contain the required dimensions and setback measurements related to sign calculations, and a visualization of the finished sign graphics and copy. Signs on facades and architectural projections (may include wall, window, canopy, awning, marquee, electronic message, changeable message, projecting): Elevation drawings must include the dimensions and area of the building façade, building unit façade, windows, structure, or architectural projection upon which the sign is to be mounted; sign area dimensions and computations (including the area of all other signs on the same façade or surface); mounting height, placement on the façade or surface, projection from the façade or surface, and description of sign materials. Projecting sign specifications must include head clearance, width of walkway over which sign is projecting, and lineal footage of the building façade (or building unit façade) on which it is mounted. Freestanding signs (may include pole, ground, electronic message, changeable message, projecting): Accurate scale drawing of the property with lot dimensions (including length of road frontage in feet); existing and proposed sign placement in relation to property lines, buildings, driveways, parking areas, easements, drive-through lanes, and travel lane; all uses of buildings and structures, sign height. Lighting specifications must include lumens, shielding, and mounting direction in relation to pedestrians, motorists, and adjacent property owners, and specifications for ambient light monitoring device if applicable (electronic message signs).
3 HOW TO MEASURE FREESTANDING SIGNS (Pole or Ground)
4 HOW TO MEASURE WALL/FASCIA SIGNS HOW TO MEASURE FAÇADE AREA L = Length H = Height BUILDING FAÇADE That portion of any exterior elevation of a building extending vertically from grade to the top of a parapet wall or eaves and horizontally across the entire width (but not depth) of that building elevation. BUILDING UNIT FAÇADE In a multi-tenant building, the portion of the building façade that pertains to a particular storefront or tenant. The building facade for a building unit shall be measured from the centerline of the party walls defining the building unit.
