The field trip will be on Saturday, February 7th. Meet in Cocoa Village in front of the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse Theater (Oleander St and Brevard Ave) at 8:30am. During the field trip, photography teams of three are asked to find and photograph easily found "subjects". The goal for photographers is to find interesting and creative ways to capture a photographic image. The subjects are easy to find, however it s up to the team to photograph them in a unique and dynamic way. When all images are "captured", we will visit the nearby Central Brevard Reference Library (308 Forrest Ave, Cocoa) and review all of the best subjects each team captured via the club s projection system. After the review, we will visit a nearby eatery for a nice lunch. It really is amazing the creative skills CCB photographers have. During the review session, you ll be amazed how the every team finds different ways to capture the same subject themes. I was born and raised in a small city (Qui-Nhon) in the central part of southern Vietnam. I escaped VN two years after the North communist government took over the entire country in 1975 by political and military force. I ve been in the US for 35 years, including 31 years in California and the last 4 years in Brevard County.

5 Rockwell Collins in Melbourne is my employer as a Senior ECAD Designer in their engineering department. My Interest in photography developed at a young age with beautiful calendar photos inspiring me. But I have really explored photography in the last 15 years while joining the camera clubs.. My first camera was a Chinon, later the Minolta and a few film cameras - the Nikon F5, Contax and Hasselblad. Today, I use Panasonic FZ-200 and Nikon D810 cameras for hobby photographs. I found my favorite photographic opportunity when joining the Camera Club of Brevard, learning and sharing knowledge about photography. Recently, I m interested in bird and macro photos In Asia, but especially Vietnam, there are so many opportunities for photographs within a short distance between cities. Whenever I have a chance, I revisit VN for exploration of different nature landscapes, underwater scapes, ethnics, cultures, food and friendly people Upcoming Photograph Competitions The CCB s photo contest theme for February is Beautiful Blur. Monthly Articles: New Feature in f-stop CCB member, and remarkable photographer, Chuck Palmer will be writing instructional and enlightening articles for the f-stop newsletters. Each month, the f-stop will feature an Adobe Lightroom Tips and Tricks article and an Educative Photography article about various facets of photography. These articles will certainly help you with your photography. Adobe Lightroom Tips and Tricks Getting Exposure Right by Chuck Palmer One of the most confusing things to learn about photography is understanding how your camera s exposure metering works. How often have we set the exposure our camera metering says is perfect only to find the image is over-exposed or underexposed? Well there is nothing wrong with your camera. It s the way your camera exposure metering works. Let s take a closer look at our typical digital camera metering system. Perfect exposure is of course subject to the photographer s interpretation of the scene or subject. But we commonly think of exposure as the amount of light that provides us with the true tonality of the subject in the photo. A proper exposure provides details in both highlights and shadows. Although not always accurate for all scenes, one exposure method DLSR users commonly use is to avoid the binkies, or highlight clipping warnings on our LCD screen after a test shot. Understanding how our DLSR meter works might avoid numerous test shots. The meters in our digital cameras are reflective light meters. They measure the amount of light bouncing off of our subject. But a meter has to have some point of reference to compare the light measured. Reflective meters try to set the exposure to make whatever light it sees medium gray, or 12.5% gray. The older value of medium gray many of us may have learned at 18% comes from the print world. A newer ANSI standard meters use puts medium gray at 12.5%, a 1/2 stop under the 18% gray commonly found in printing. Try this experiment with your own camera. On a bright sunny day, shoot a black card and a white card with your camera set to Program (P) mode. Fill your image frame with each card. Be sure to spot meter directly on the white and black cards Make sure both cards are photographed in the exact same light. Don t look at your LCD monitor until you have taken both photos. You now have a photo of a pure black, and pure white card. Correct? Not exactly. Review your photos. You will Page 6 of 10

7 see that you have two almost identical gray card photos. What happened? Your camera meter measured the reflected light and set your exposure to reproduce 12.5% gray. So understanding that your meter pushes or pulls your exposure to reproduce medium gray, we probably have to compensate exposure unless of course our subject reflects medium gray tones. Modern digital cameras incorporate some very sophisticated matrix or evaluative metering sensors that interpret tones and contrast of the scene with complicated algorithms which significantly improves meter accuracy. But we often still have to compensate for metering error, depending on the tones and light contrast of our scene. So do we just guess at exposure compensation? Well sort of. Understanding a reflective metering chart may help us pinpoint our exposure compensation target. If our subject is mostly white (think snow scene), and our meter gives us an exposure reproducing 12.5% gray, we would have to add 1.5 to 2.5 stops of exposure to reproduce white with some details. Likewise, if our subject is mostly dark, and our meter gives us an exposure reproducing 12.5% gray again, we would have to reduce our exposure 1 to 2.5 stops to reproduce blacks with some details (see chart). The most critical thing to remember is that a reflective meter will tend to under expose a white (light toned) subject, and over exposes a black or very dark toned subject. So we have to compensate. Reflective Metering Chart be entered into a drawing for a gift card.) But we can use our new knowledge of how our meters work to help us solve exposure challenges. The reflectance chart helps us make some decisions in setting our exposure compensation, or at least it provides an understanding as to whether we should add or subtract light for proper exposure. Exposure compensation can be changed by changing our lens aperture (f-number), shutter speed, ISO, or by just dialing in a compensation value using the Exposure Compensation feature on digital cameras. As you gain experience judging the tonality of your subject, you will be able to quickly dial in a target exposure compensation. Here is a good rule of thumb guide I have used for exposure compensations when metering subjects with reflective light meters: Subject Tonality Compensation (Exposure Stops) Very Light +1 2/3 Light +1 Medium Toned 0 Dark -1/2 Very Dark -1 And here s a real-life example. Nancy is photographed in a white blouse in front of a very light background in the shade. Photo 1 on the left shows a zero compensation exposure with a Nikon camera set to Matrix metering mode (Evaluative on Canon). You can see Nancy s blouse is a predictable medium gray value, and her face is a little dark. Adding 1 1/3 stops of exposure compensation for Photo 2 on the right renders her blouse white with details and provides a proper exposure on her face. Of course we typically don t take photos where the tonality is extremely black (dark), or totally white (light). (If you read this article please the club at info@ccbrevard.com and the first ten replies will Page 7 of 10

8 Photo 1 Photo 2 Zero Compensation Plus 1 1/3 stops more light Once you have a good handle on how your meter works, and have some experience with exposure compensation, break some rules! Often the best and most interesting photos come from making the subject look a lot darker or lighter in the photo than it looked in real life. Turning a scene into your own artistic interpretation is what makes photography so much fun and rewarding. Keep experimenting, and may the remarkable photos be yours. Lightroom Tips and Tricks by Chuck Palmer Happy New Year. It s time to update your Copyright Preset. It s a new year, so that means you probably need to update your copyright metadata preset in Lightroom. Many photographers take advantage of adding copyright information in the metadata of each digital image upon importing into Lightroom. It s an easy way to mark your files with your personal copyright and contact information. Here s how to update your Lightroom preset: 1. Go to the Library module and click on the Import button in the left panel. 2. In the right panel of the Import window, click on the Metadata drop down under the Apply During Import panel. 3. If you have previously created a metadata preset, click on Edit Presets. If not, click on New. 4. In the Edit Metadata Presets window, name your new present if you are creating a new one, or select the preset you want to edit. 5. Scroll down to the IPTC Copyright section. In the Copyright field, if you re a Windows user, you can hold the Alt key and type 0169 to reproduce the copyright symbol. Or you can enclose the letter c in parenthesis. Your copyright may look like 2015 Chuck Palmer. You might consider entering All Rights Reserved in the Rights Usage Terms field too. 6. Enter your appropriate contact information in the IPTC Creator fields. 7. Click on Done in the bottom of the window. Now you can apply this import preset to images you import by selecting your Metadata preset before importing your images into Lightroom. Select the appropriate Metadata preset in the Apply During Import panel on the right side of the Import dialog window. Now you will apply your digital Copyright and contact information automatically in the digital file of each new image you import into Lightroom. Page 8 of 10
